Go and read 'The Sandman' instead, or maybe 'The Book Thief'.
Their Deaths are much more realistic -in my opinion-; in the way that they are not vengeful, they are only performing a necessary duty (I say this having watch only the intro of SPN's Death, nothing more).

I second those, although the Discworld Death is my personal favorite.

Seconding the Book Thief. It's a bit long, but IMHO it's also one of the best books ever written that includes Death.

Agreed about the amazingness of the The Sandman and the Book Thief, but feel I should mention that SPN's Death is in no way vengeful either. Snarky and without much respect for human life (or interplanetary life, which is hinted at here and there. Death in Space!), yes. But he's very much of the 'just a natural force of the universe' brand of personified death overall.

He's not vengeful either. He's annoyed that everyone keeps screwing up the natural order. He likes junk food.

Well, he did kill a guy for bumping into him on the street. I might remember this wrong, but didn't he also bring Bobby's wife and those other people back as zombies just to mess with Bobby. That's pretty vengeful and messing with the natural order.

That was an intro, and didn't really happen in the episode that I remember. He also didn't bring back the zombies. That was just part of the apocalypse coming. So, still awesome.

I always got the impression that he killed the man by bumping into him in the street because it was the man's time to go.

I loved Death in The Book Thief, but I hated the writing. My first language is German, so I got freaking annoyed at the translations of German words. Why not pull an Anthony Burgess?

Also, I have never in my life heard anyone use the word "Saumensch". Not a single time. Saukerl, yes, that's common. But Saumensch? Maybe it's a regional thing. Still, I absolutely hate this word.

Nope, not regional either. I live about five miles from where the book is set and I've never heared it used. Ever. Sounds really weird *shudders*
