Dude I loved Ren and Stimpy as a kid and when I youtubed some of it recently I was struck by A. how disgusting it could be and B. how much some of the content clearly went over my head. I'm not sure if adult me actually likes it, or if its just the nostalgia talking.

I think what gets me about 90s nostalgia is people like my cousin who was born in 96 going on about how awesome it all was and I'm like...I was born in 85 and can remember literally the last year and a half of the 80s. That's it. I'm probably more 90s kid than 80s kid in spite of existing for half of the 80s.

It just grossed me out when I was little. It still does, actually.

I think I had that sometimes. There was one where they get eaten by a worm (you don't see them being eaten, but see the aftermath) that I'm getting a funny feeling even just thinking about urgh. I always turned away from that bit.

Agreed about mid and late 90s born kids acting as if the 90s were the best when they probably don't remember much from it. I was born in 86 and I can't remember what was the 80s and what was early 90s (which is also something that irks me; a friend of mine was born in 88 and she always goes on about how great the 80s were when I doubt she can correctly remember pop culture from the first two years of her life).

To be fair, I'm only a couple years older than you, and I clearly remember a lot of things that were made in the 80s still being popular in the early-mid 90s. I don't remember much about the actual 80s, but I still remember loving Rainbow Brite and My Little Pony, and wanting a Cabbage Patch doll (things that are all associated exclusively with the 80s now).

I was born in '86, same as you, and I have memories from '89. I have even more from '90, remembering with some vividness the release of big songs from that year (Madonna's "Vogue", Wilson Phillips' "Hold On"). Heck, I can remember the release of a few songs in '89, too. Some people have better long-term memories than others, and if you have a strong association with particular things, you're more apt to recall them.

I don't know what your friend from '88 is going on about, though. I have a hard time seeing how she could remember things from before her second birthday.

I was born in 83 and I agree, that's the most annoying thing ever and I see it all over tumblr all the time and the annoying thing is, because of the internet, it's easy to pretend to be nostalgic over something you don't even remember or have never seen

I loathe Ren & Stimpy, but after we covered it in some class or other, I have to appreciate how drastically different and original it was trying to be for it's time. Waaaay too much gross-out humor for me, but it pushed the envelope, both in what could be considered acceptable and in artistic terms (it was apparently one of the few animated shows where they refused to use "stock" animation for the character's movements). So basically, for me, it's like most of the independent comics of the 70's--I do not care for them at all, but I can appreciate the changes they made in the medium that other comics/shows that I do enjoy were later able to exploit.

Dude. I was born in '82, and the bulk of my media memories are from the 90s with a smattering of mid to late 80s.
