Because it was. It was pretty much what people had been doing by themselves for years (Or the idea of sharing art and talking about the series was). She could have put the extra info in the encyclopedia - that people will STILL pay for.

CoS is shaping up to be better - the sorting is still the highlight of the first book

To be quite honest, I'm just there for the pretty artwork and the extra-information. The games are kind of not very interesting, and I couldn't care less about the housecup.

I just wish it would go a little faster.

Don't feel bad. I mean, apparently, they've JUST NOW added in a few of the chapters for CoS.

It's boring as fuck!! I mean...she could have easily put all this shit into a couple of HP encyclopedias and the fans would have gobbled them up. I certainly would have!! Clicking on random images for a little tidbit of info just isn't fun. And reading the chapters just to put this new info into place? You may as well just curl up in a chair/bed/what have you and read the damn book and leave the computer. You'd be too caught up in the book to pay attention to the site.

I was expecting this to honestly be like an MMO, with a few parts of it where you can read along with the book, but it basically be from someone else's perspective. Instead, if you get Gryffindor, like me, you get Harry's perspective and not much else. If I wanted that I would just reread the damn novels by myself. I have no idea what it's like for the other houses, but damn is it fucking boring.

The ONLY fun thing about Pottermore was when I stayed up all night JUST to get into the beta.

yeah. books-wise they're doing better with the second one, but the chat format and moderation is a self-destructive fucking wreck, unfortunately, and the house cup is pretty dumb if they don't get in a lot more games/points opportunities. but really it's the treating everyone like they're 8 years old that is the main trouble.

I honestly forget my username, it's been so long since I used it. I think young kids would enjoy it, but I honestly would rather have a hard copy of the encyclopedia.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are disappointed. I'm mostly sticking around for the extra info that we're getting, I hope some really good stuff comes out in the GoF section.

I was most excited when I was staying up with friends waiting for our e-mails. And the sorting, that was cool. Other than that, I think I forgot my username.

I only signed up to be sorted so it wasn't a major letdown for me, but I was still surprised about how little there was to do and how unexciting the whole experience was. You aren't being a terrible fan for thinking that though - just honest with yourself.

I agree that it sucks. I wish they had more ways to connect with one another, like a chat or even just a pm. How are we supposed to build a community with the limited interaction?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
it feels like an incomplete marketing gimmick

because that's what it was

the whole point of it was to encourage users to buy the books online through their shop

sorry, op :(

[personal profile] celestinenox 2012-07-19 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much agree, anon. It would be a lot better if they'd get over this whole "protecting the kiddies by not letting there be real interaction" and make the Great Hall and/or the common rooms into chat rooms and allow for PMs or some other function of communication between friends. Or even if they had an intersite email function. Something. (Also, if they'd allow the Beta input form to actually have a text window for suggestions.) (Also, more games.) (Also, more ways to earn points/Galleons.) (Also...)

You're not supposed to be able to meet/talk to individuals on there. It's part of their child protection policy. Don't you think that the auto-generated username system would be undermined somewhat if you could conduct private conversations and figure out ways to contact people outside of the site?

It is a gimmick. It's partly a gimmick to sell audiobooks and ebooks and half a free source of extra information, games and silliness for people who are interested in that sort of thing. If you don't like it, don't use it. It's not as if you paid for the privilege.

It isn't supposed to be a social networking site.

Let's face it, most people signed up to be Sorted and, in some cases, find out what wand they'd have. I'm looking forward to the hardcopy encyclopaedia, personally.

I don't like it either! Which is depressing, because I waited so long to get in! Once they opened it up to everyone, I was so excited, and I was determined to make the most of the experience...

...but yeah, it's pretty boring. I more or less gave up on the site and am now just waiting for a hard copy of the encyclopedia to come out.

At least I have all of the books on my Kindle in the meantime.

You're not wrong; this site is such a flop. There's no real functionality there as far as interacting with other users, and wasn't that the point? I get that they need to protect underage users, but the way they've gone about that has basically made it impossible for members to interact as a fandom. And IMO there's far better places to hang out and chat about HP and share art.

I completely agree. But what irked me most? I could never brew a potion properly. I have 2 Bachelor's degrees (one in geology and another in anthropology with a minor in history and a Masters of Science) and have never felt so incompetent and stupid. It's just clicking buttons at the proper time and in the correct sequence, but goddammit, for some reason, my brain just can't handle it.

I had so many friends (adults!) who were way eager. I was like "meh"...then finally it opened to the public and I thought, hey I love me some HP. Getting sorted was kinda fun (Slytherin), getting my stuff together, but the whole walking through the story? I wish that could have been optional. Maybe I'm weird, but I kinda wish they'd just released an annotated version of the books (so would have been there!) - that'd be fun. But having to have to book while trying to balance my computer?

Maybe I'm just too old for Pottermore. That makes me kind of sad because I think Harry Potter is one of the few books of our era that will become a classic (because only a few from each era ever do).

Either way...I can't wait until my son is old enough to read them. That'll be better than Pottermore any day of the week :)

Common opinion is common.

It's basically a really crippled form of HP Facebook. Needs more points-gathering opportunities.

Don't feel bad. It really isn't that great. BUT I can't bash it because it did two things for me:

(1) Give me the life story of Prof. McGonagall.

(2) Convince people Potions is actually difficult and not just "magical cooking you'd have to be an idiot to fail at." As a very poor chemist who has had to take lots of chemistry that one always made my blood boil.

Oof. Yeah, Pottermore was pretty much a disaster, OP, it's not an unpopular opinion and you're not a bad fan for thinking so. I was a huge Harry Potter fan in my day and I waited months for my invite (because I was fortunately on an RV trip with no internet while people were rushing in to sign up to be in beta) and I got in to Pottermore and it was just. . .a huge letdown. It wasn't fun! It should have been like other sites where kids have a setting and adults have a setting and the adults' setting has a chat function and different games. I got sorted, got my wand, got a bit of extra information, and then the day after I signed up I basically never logged in ever again.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
To each their own, but I enjoy Pottermore a lot! I didn't join expecting it to be an opportunity to meet other fans, though. I think the animation's gorgeous, love the extra info, and even find the spells and potions fun once I got the hang of them.

That being said, I don't approach Harry Potter with a critical mind, which is why I don't participate in the fandom at all. I couldn't care less about objections about the problems in wizarding society/unrealistic aspects of the books, or finding villains sympathetic. I love the world and the books almost completely unquestioningly, and for me that transfers over to Pottermore. To each his own though.

And the reason I'm still checking as they update CoS is so I can at least know if any of my fics in progress are getting Jossed. -_- Not that I'll change them, but I'd like to at least know.

(So far there's been one 'Noooooo!' and a couple of 'Wait, that doesn't even make sense in the context of the books, you just made that up right now's)
