...but then it wouldn't have been Fullmetal Alchemist?

Yeah, this.

A side series featuring some of these characters' pasts/futures may be cool, though. :D

Yeah, that. What the fuck, anon?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree

A. I just like them as characters
B. I think they're needed to be the pacifists since no one in the military is. There's a balance between them, the homunculi and then the soldiers who regret what they've done.
C. They story about Al's body being missing really resonates with the whole theme of what it means to be human.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...You kind of missed the whole point of the series, didn't you? It's called Fullmetal Alchemist for a reason.

So drop three of the most important (& well loved) characters and then change everything else about the series that made it unique? Uh...okay.

But I'm honestly curious, are you saying they should've kept the alchemy storyline but focused on the army instead? Ed and Al are so fundamental to the series I can't even imagine how that sort of story would work without them. It would be a completely different show. One that I probably would hold no interest in. But... *shrugs*

I think I could kind of understand how you feel,.. I mean I've always thought Claus from Last Exile was a terrible protagonist and the series would have been improved if he, and Lavie were, not gone, but had been a side characters with Alex, Sophia, or Dio as the protagonist. But FMA would be a completely different series without Elrics, and Winry. It just wouldn't work.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand finding Ed (and maaaaybe Al) annoying, but why Winry?

I liked FMA (the overall manga canon, not Brotherhood) the way it was, although I agree with you that I also found the supporting cast way more interesting and likable than the main trio. For me, the scenes that focused on the brothers were okay at best, but there were so many FUCK YEAH moments with the supporting characters!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't find Winry annoying, but at the same time, I also don't think she added anything to the plot (imo) and I wouldn't have cared if they nixed her. To me it was a brothers-in-arms (literally) journey, and the sort of slapped on childhood love interest didn't fit?

That said, I quite liked Winry as a character and think people who find her annoying must be smoking something interesting.

IDK, I like Winry but I can see why someone would find her annoying. Too many scenes where she's pining over Ed or being manipulative.

I personally love the series because there are so many amazing characters besides the Trio, all of whom have their own lives, with their own backstories, and that Arakawa made them seem important to the storyline without subtracting from what the Trio brought to it. That's good storytelling, incredible manga/graphic novel storytelling, and the fact that I care for characters who might only appear on possibly forty pages or so in a 108-chapter fic says a lot for Arakawa's abilities to create characters and the world they inhabit.

I also totally agree with the comment that the Trio are shown as pacifistic "innocents" (if you will) to the military. Without their reactions to the horrors of the military's actions in Ishbal and elsewhere, we would have only seen one side of the story, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i think the military and military characters ended up being more interesting /because/ they weren't the leads, myself.

Sorry but I completely disagree. And, um, how can you have Full Metal Alchemist without the actual Full Metal Alchemist? :|

I'm there, OP! I always hate happy scrappy hero pups. I mean, Ed and Al are less perky and innocent than most, but they still don't really interest me.

...This is likely the alcohol in me, but the replies asking "but wouldn't it not be Fullmetal Alchemist then?" are making me imagine, like, a musical spinoff that's only about the military characters now (but still focusing on the alchemy users), so it would just be called "Alchemists!" (jazz hands)

(or it's the punchline to a joke detailing all the terrible or morally ambiguous things they've done in the series. "So what do you call your act?" "The Alchemists!")

[personal profile] dragonimp 2012-07-23 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I love the military characters, but Ed and Al were the heart of the story, and for a reason. The story just doesn't move without them and their influence.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-23 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can definitely sympathize with preferring side characters, but this is one series where I really can't imagine being able to shift it to another perspective. I'm a bit curious how somebody can even picture FMA without Ed and Al, whether you like them or not. That really would be a completely different story.

[personal profile] firstmoonie 2012-07-24 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much disagree with you.

However I always wondered how it would have been if Roy was the main character and Ed's story was a side story. Because military storyline is huuuuugee while Ed's journey ends when he gets his and Al's body.

I don't have high hopes for spin-off since Arakawa isn't the biggest Mustang fan.
malurette: (fma)

[personal profile] malurette 2012-07-24 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
This is my headcanon. I know we need Ed and Al to get the story going, that they're the main characters and all, but I never care for main characters, I focus on the support cast and on meanwhile, in a non-important part of the world, and with very little relation to the Big Plot, ordinary people keep going on with their life.

(I have to disagree on the "Winry being annoying", though. I liked her a lot, what I found really annoying was how the Ed/Win romance was so poorly handled.)
