How does Sean Astin remain so young-looking?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He made a deal with Mother Earth.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
HE MUST POSSESS THE ONE RING.

IT'S SO OBVIOUS. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE FIGURE IT OUT BEFORE NOW?!

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/sean-astin-cabin-fever-341721

then again, i already thought he looked old in lotr.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. He looks like the love child of Harry Potter & George Costanza there. Oh Sean, I'll always adore you, but I think a new stylist is in order.

Maybe because he's a little chubby and his face is roundish?

1) The BNFs don't have to read any fic they don't want to. They are just fans, like you, and they read fic for enjoyment, just like you. You don't have to take it personally if they aren't reading your fic. There is no point in being resentful, or for trying to to please them specifically.

2) Just because they aren't reading your fic, doesn't mean other people who enjoy your pairing wouldn't and might enjoy your take on it better than the BNFs.

3) Don't make your fandom enjoyment contingent on other specific people. Write what you enjoy, read what you like, and stop making other people responsible for your self-esteem.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
1) Wow, way to defend people who often are absolute assholes. I've been in numerous fandoms where the BNFs really did refuse to read anything outside their friends' and pets' works. In small fandoms, this is especially obvious as a small handful of authors magically never get recced, included in fandom newsletters, or mentioned as part of fandom to newcomers, sometimes for no obvious reason (such as purple prose or illiterate grammar).

2) BNFs can make and break authors' readership and comments, so being snubbed (and the OP did not say THEY were being snubbed specifically but ALL non-BNFs were being snubbed) can be very, very hard to deal with as you feel that no one cares about your writing.

3) This last sentiment is the only thing I agree with.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
You are hereby the hero to all non-BNFs.

Going by my own experience, there aren't many other places that hold fast to exclusivity than nearly every aspect/pairing in the LOTR universe. They STILL do it, whether in Sean/Elijah or other OTPs. It was one of the reasons I bailed on LOTR, when I'd been an active participant for almost four years.

What really got my teeth grinding was the selfish nature, as well. It's not just a BNF-gripe, it's the idea that there was (and really, is) a lot of shameless fic-begging, feedback-whoring and other nonsense. If you're not writing fifty different fics of the OTP Of the Week then you're not doing enough, you're a bad fan. I'd written many, many, MANY fics for people, a lot of which weren't my pairing at all, and I'd always be told, "This is so great! I'm going to write one in your pairing now!" and... no dice. After I went through a Christ-ton of hassle in posting a story for a community challenge for a pairing I'd started to hate but wanted to "contribute" for my friends' sakes, I asked myself, "What ARE yo doing this for, anyway? It's not like they care." That was the end of that.

The fandom I'm in now? Couldn't ask for better. No drama, no hassle and no BNF antics running amok. It's funny, that: the bigger the fandom, the bigger the greedy assholes involved. Here's my own confession:

Sometimes I wear an evil smirk in knowing that the LOTR fandom's petering out. After all of the shenanigans, the greed and bloated egos, it's a bit satisfying. If that makes me a jackass, then a jackass I am.

praying for the rebirth of lotrps with the hobbit

grace me with another crystalwank, pls

(Anonymous) 2012-07-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience, this was definitely true. LOTRIPS was cliquey, if a fic pairing wasn't Vig/Orli, or also involved Sean Bean, you might as well forget it. It was like one big circle jerk,

(Anonymous) 2012-07-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Circle jerk is a great way of describing lotr rps! lol

OP here. Thanks for this, it was all I was looking for. Someone else who felt the same.

Oh, Sean Astin.

I have such mad love for many of his movies, and then I made the mistake of reading his memoir. He comes across like what my mama would call a great big titty baby. LOL No one has ever acted so hard, suffered so much for his craft, or been slighted so often by the acting world. *pets him*

This is why I don't read memoirs or autobiographies by anyone, especially people I like. My SO eats them up, but I'd rather not know so-and-so is actually a jerk or whatever.

..I wrote a Elijah Wood/me and my best friend/Sean Astin/Orlando Bloom self-insert fanfic when I was like, 13, with my best friend. It's embarrassing as fuck, but it was so much fun. I'm glad to see someone else who loves them just as much as I do (did).
