I always thought that the latter part of the secret was kind of implied, yeah, but then again, my Snilly/Snapefen goggles have always been way too tight.

Yeah, definitely too tight

I'll fully admit that they often cut off the flow of blood to my brain.

I first read this as "cut off the flow of blood to my face."

Except that we never saw her responding to his affections? She obviously cared about him a lot, but there was always this tenseness and lack of romance in the few interactions of theirs we saw.

I infer from this secret that any sex she would have had with him would have been for fun, not because she loved him.

Honestly, I kinda like this idea. (-:

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But she had to know that he was in love with her or at least crushing on her on a more serious way; I can see Snape saying yes to sex without strings, thinking (rightly so) that that was the more he would get from her, but would she be okay with potentially using him like that?

Not as she's written in canon.

Harry gets to have the uncomfortable realization that his dad was a real human being who behaved very badly as a child, but we don't get a similar moment for Lily. She remains on the pedestal for every character in the series. I think undercutting her character like this would be an interesting version of her.

I don't think she was perfect but the idea of her fucking Snape for any reason is just so gross...

I'd love a more realistic portrayal, too. I hope JKR gives us more on Pottermore, even if it's not in the books.

I haven't been to that site. Do you think it's worth a visit?

IDK, I saw affection in the way she interacted with him. I saw a real intimacy in the fact that it was Snape who introduced her to the magical world, and genuine affection in their interactions. I thought it was pretty well implied that there was something romantic between them off-screen (and yes, I'm in the same boat with the OP--I also assumed that Lily took Snape's virginity) but I'll fully, fully admit that it must just be my shipping goggles at work. Talking to other people about Snape and Snape/Lily made me realize that I often interpret him and his relationship with Lily very differently than others, and that's okay. While I see where you, comment-anon are coming from, I'm with the OP on this one. And there's nothing wrong with either interpretation!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if I disagree, I can see why other people would see them like that; we got to see the memories that had stayed with Snape's heart the most, and not much of their regular day-to-day interactions. We can only extrapolate from what little we saw of Lily there and elsewhere and the words of the other characters.

Me too! I think that Snape and Lily had a sort of idyllic childhood romance. ;;___;; If incredibly short-lived.

I'm not sure I buy into the idea of that carrying through into adulthood, though, since we saw their break-up as friends and I always assumed that happened well before she became sexually active. I can buy her as being a free-spirit, but I think it would have been during a time in her life when Snape had already burned all of his chances with her. Anything that she would have done with him after that point would have had to be out of cruelty on her part, and I don't think she ever would have been cruel to him like that, no matter how much they'd grown apart. If she has any sensitivity at all (and I believe she had a lot!) she would have kept such liaisons to partners where there wouldn't be any unfortunate overwrought emotional complications and hurt feelings involved.

But I feel like there is a sort of subthread that Lily's heart was always his to lose... not that he "deserved" her or she "owed" it to him, but that she genuinely had a connection to him that was more than mere friendship, and that if he had even been a little less craptacular in every single way, she might have held onto those feelings until she was old enough to make a real lasting romance out of it. I always figured that to be a part of his retrospective angst... to realize that she WAS his, in all the ways that matter, and that it was entirely his own fault that he squandered her affections.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious, but what about canon lead to your interpretation? I didn't even get the impression Lily cared about him as a best friend. She didn't even seem that affected when he called her a "filthy little mudblood". By that point, I think she was just exhausted with him. On the other hand, she got all defensive when Snape started insulting James, and flushed when he insinuated that she thought the Marauders were great. I think even back then she had a crush on James, she just didn't care for his immaturity and arrogance. JKR implied as much herself.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what you were reading because they argued literally in every single memory. They were getting along fine and then something would happen to cause a rift again. It was always on the defensive, always teetering on the edge of failing. And when the friendship did fall apart, finally, Lily didn't break down and cry, her voice didn't break or quiver, she just stayed cool and told him to fuck off, essentially. I don't even buy that they were even really best friends, despite using the term. They didn't seem close at all. I think their friendship just gradually fell apart over ~6 years, and it didn't even have a good start to begin with...

*cough*Ron/Hermione*cough*

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
da

I honestly never saw it coming and am a little baffled by people saying that it was so obvious and the lead up to it was seen by everyone, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I just don't get some relationship dynamics and that fictional characters are not worth getting into fights over.

Don't worry.

I saw them coming too, but I hated it. But that's because I hate the trope that "fighting constantly, even meanly, means they want to screw/are in love."

Hermione and Ron bickered, and it was often driven by jealousy due to others like Krum and Lavender. Snape and Lily fought, and over issues completely unromantically driven. If Ron were calling people Mudbloods, inventing lethal dark magic, and aiming to join Voldemort, no one in their right minds would think Hermione was just bickering with him, or that it was really sexual tension in disguise. Lily's issues with Snape were far, far from being unimpressed with his attitude towards girls' noses.

IDC. I think we read their interactions way more differently.

I saw a lot of meanness in their interactions. It's why I never liked Ron/Hermione.

*shrug*

Both pairs fought. That was what I was getting at.

A dumbass nonword to describe fans devoted to Snape.

Especially since "astral wives" is already right there and so much more colorful.
