In my country it is illegal to use excessive violence to defend oneself.

There was this case in my home-town where someone's house was broken into and he stabbed them on the way out and he was successfully prosecuted for that.

Carrying a weapon and defending yourself is pretty much an thing that also sort of explains superheroes are so American. You never really seem to trust the government with your safety hence carrying a weapon and the goverment always building evil labs in those series

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course Americans don't trust our government with our safety. Our country was started because we kicked the old government out because we thought they were unfair.

NAYRT
So did most European countries. ;)

That said, there *is* an attachment to vigilantism in the US that doesn't exist in many parts of Europe. Just last week, a (European) jeweler got arrested and will be tried for gunning down a would-be robber. Those who think he was right and that he should walk free are on the right side of the political spectrum, if not on the far right.
Different histories, different perspectives, I guess.

There's a pretty big difference between a revolution that's essentially a rebellion against a colonizing force by those living in the colony, and one that takes place from within an existing nation with that nation's citizens as primary actors. One's more of a reform from the bottom up and the other is a clear "fuck you" to the colonizing country.

In any case, this secret is stupid as fuck and OP should be ashamed for this obvious attempt at trolling

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Still doesn't explain the Dutch I mean we kicked out the Spanish because taxes they put on our trade. That is pretty similar? And that revolution created our country.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
The Dutch seem to appreciate individual liberties more than a lot of other Western European countries though, don't they? I mean they put a huge value on freedom of speech (even if it offends others), freedom of religion, etc.

It's not just Americans that resent having others, especially the government, telling them what to do (and believe me, there's nothing particularly Republican or Democratic about that -- it's a universal American sentiment)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That argument is always kinda weird to me I mean we had a pretty massive uprising against the taxes the Spanish put on our trade but we don't think really have as low taxes/public resources as you

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is why we in the north tend to view you with the words "Yup, America's going crazy. Again." in out heads ;)

Honestly, a lot of the intricasies of American politics are lost on anyone not immersed in them, so having you for neighbors is a little like having an ant farm.

That being said, I highly doubt everyone in the movie is going to agree on one political party/agenda. There are three things you don't discuss with company, and there's a reason politics is one. (Religion and sex are the others, FYI)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not always about trusting, or not trusting the government - it's also the fact that, at the end of the day people *do* slip through the cracks, and those cracks can end up harming you - and the fact that no one can really predict what will happen where, and if you'll be able to get away without using force to defend yourself. People can try to charge you for your actions, and it's been known for courts to rule that whatever the person did wasn't in self defense.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
uhm why not?

I mean it's our governments job to plug as many cracks as is humanly possible and if you carry a gun you don't trust the government to do their job and keep criminals of the street.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
...that's because they don't.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

I always figure that it's thinking like that that makes all those people in the cracks that you fear.

What's so wrong about assuming that most everyone in the world is a good person? Or at the very least, not actively trying to harm you. And that, IDK, you should return the favor.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
lol no.

Angry hateful people are going to exist no matter how much you ~believe~ in the goodness of others. I'm optimistic, but I still wouldn't blindly trust everyone to do what's best or right. And IDK, maybe you can still distrust people but treat them with respect, dignity, and kindness. :|

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, you'd most likely get prosecuted for that here in the States, too. The usual rule is that you have a right to use deadly force to defend yourself or others, if you're under attack. But you don't have a right to use deadly force to defend property. If burglars are running out of my house with my stuff, I can't shoot them to stop them and get it back.

If they come into my house and attack me, or members of my family, that's different. Is it really the rule where you are that you have to let an intruder in your home kill you rather than risk his life by fighting back?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

(I was waiting to see if OP answered, but I don't want to leave you hanging either... OP, correct me if I'm wrong!)

No, it's not a rule. If you're physically threatened, you can fight back. If your property is threatened, you can't use deadly force. Then again, in Western Europe, it is very rare to have a gun at home, and even rarer to use it. Practically everyone I know has never seen a gun up close, much less fired one. Vigilantism is really not deeply rooted in the society I live in.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm American, and the only time I've ever seen a gun was when one of my housemates was a policeman. The US really doesn't have a gun in every household, and I would say most people I know have never seen a gun up close.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is what most non-Americans don't understand; they think that a statistic like "Americans own thirteen guns for every man, woman and child in the country" means "every man, woman and child in the States owns thirteen guns." They don't get that there's a HUGE number of Americans who never have and never will own guns and then a much smaller number who drive the average WAY up by collecting guns like we collect JPEGs in fap folders.
