F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?
Pet thread
Guilty pleasure thread
Favorite old shows
First fandom?

I feel this way too. Like, how can superhero movies get more attention than the comics? Why the hell would you think Rorschach is a sympathetic character? WTF does anyone see in Nu!Who when the Classic era was so much better and had much more interesting, likable, and better developed characters?*

*Obvs, I realize that all these things are matters of opinion, but when everyone else is acting like the opposite is true, indisputable fact, then, yeah, it's kind of hard not to get defensive.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Movies are less of a commitment (time, money and enthusiasm) than serial comics; because it appeals to people who want to be rebels and different but don't dare and don't actually understand society vs rebellion and all its implications very well; because Nu!Who has spread more in sites like tumblr and such, creating more curiosity in passerby and it's easier to find and catch up on those seasons when there is the urge to start discussing it with their friends.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and it seems that the characters in Nu!Who are more physically appealing to young people in this generation, what with changing fashions and ideas of "beauty".

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe some people actually like New Who and movie versions better?

I'm not a fan of comics as a medium. And as a woman, I much prefer the movie versions of female characters because they are real women playing them so they can't wear impossibly skimpy costumes and contort their bodies in ludicrous positions just to appeal to male fans.

I've tried some Old Who and liked it. But I still prefer New Who. Partly in terms of effects, but mostly in terms of female characters and storylines.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Because a whole parade of women who are almost all out to bone the Doctor is so much better in terms of representation than the wide variety of motivations, characterizations, and interests found in the female companions of Classic!Who...Uh huh.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a huge fan of everyone being in love with the Doctor. But the bits of Classic Who I've seen involved women who weren't actually much help, screamed a lot, and were mostly there to be eye candy. New Who has Donna and River, both older women. New Who has women who help the Doctor and are often vital to his success.

I'm not saying Classic Who is bad, because it isn't at all. I like Classic Who. I just prefer New Who.

And really, it is totally and completely subjective anyway. It is all Doctor Who and all awesome. We just happen to prefer different eras.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Vickie was one of the First Doctor's companions. She armed an entire fucking revolution and saved the TARDIS crew. Screaming, useless what now?

Zoe traveled with Two. She was brilliant and beautiful, and she saved the day more than once. More than that, though, she called out the bullshit of the men around her, and did so without being immediately smacked back into her place by the plot.

Liz was a brilliant scientist and a companion of the Third Doctor. Her departure, in part, marked what was probably the first time that the show itself acknowledged the way in which its premise limits the (overwhelmingly female) companions of the Doctor. She refused to just hold test tubes and tell the Doctor he was brilliant but knew that as long as she was working with this ludicrously advanced alien intelligence, that was the role she would be relegated to. She was succeeded by Jo, who might have been significantly better at the screaming and getting captured gig, but was also an escape artist whose skills helped the Doctor out of many, many jams.

That's just a few of the best companions of the first three Doctors. Shall I go on?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you taking this so personally? There is nothing wrong with liking New Who better. Neither are objectively better than the other.

I will have to check those out, though. They do sound awesome. But I don't think anyone will surpass Donna for me. I'll always prefer New Who for her if nothing else.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not taking it personally. Just pointing out what bullshit it is when people claim that Classic!Who companions just screamed, got captured, and fainted in the Doctor's arms. That's a flat-out lie. A fabrication. An insult. And it seems to be one of the primary arguments New Who fans (ones who have generally only ever seen a handful of classic serials and thus are nowhere near familiar enough with the material to make a proper judgement) like to use to put their version above the Classic.

Did you miss the part where anon said "from the bits I've seen"...

They clearly haven't watched all of it, but watched enough to not bother.

Relax that anus of yours. It's no insult or lie for them to get a different impression to you

ayrt

artists/execs/the fanboys encouraging skimpily dressed creatures with odd skeletons and bodies parading as women and sex objects instead of actual humanoid life beings who happen to be female in comics piss me off too, yeah

I don't know about DW because I've never watched any episode of either series. I'm going by what I've observed of people talking about it on tumblr and various communities and the screencaps or gifs they post

except for the Rorscharch bit, I was trying to offer my observations, rather than passing judgement; there's nothing wrong with not wanting to spend more than a couple hours on something or maybe not having the time and money for it; and if people watch something for the eye-candy (whether my assumption is right or not vov probably not), that's cool too

anon I replied to was wondering about all that, so I tried to reply with what I had observed

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
same anon

sorry if I came across as offensive or something, is what I'm trying to get at with that tldr

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
sa

I didn't mean to offend anyone or make anyone feel bad, if that's what happened (except people who think Rorscharch is someone to be emulated; come on, his saving grace was sticking to his principles, but the man was messed up in the head; the whole thing was a parade of flawed people, not role models STOP TRYING TO BE JUST LIKE THEM PLEASE orz)

I'm not articulating well today, sorry D:

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I <3 my flawed characters, though Rorschach was never one of my favourites. I guess we can offend his (more extreme) fans together. *sticks out tongue; blows raspberry*

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I know that many of his fans are perfectly aware of what they're seeing and like him as a character and know that he's not this SUPER AWESOME MAN WHO IS HELLUVA LOT STRONG AND DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS AW YEAH.

Flawed characters are neat, but, seriously, it's like some works need a disclaimer from the author saying something like, "This is a work of fiction, these are people with shitty attitudes who are not perfectly good people despite fighting evil — please don't emulate them, these sorts of behaviors are terrible in real life and are the mark of terrible people, not cool people, please don't imitate them, okay? Okay.

PS: Same goes for villains. Please improve your judgement of character."

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I shouldn't say anything because some of my favourite characters are villain types (More 80's comic-era Magneto than Rorschach, though, if that means anything to you), but, yeah, recognize the difference between things that sound cool in fiction but aren't so great in real life and traits that can and maybe should be emulated on your quest to be a functional member of society.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon you originally replied to (and the one who carried on the Doctor Who conversation with other!Anon). My original questions were actually meant to be rhetorical--just things that represent everyone in fandom except you (seemingly) agrees on x. I didn't mind you answers, though. I think you make good points, and people who deny that in at least some cases, fans choose movies over comics and so on because of convenience are being over-defensive to the max. Like, okay, if that's not why you (generic) prefer it, but pretending that that's not one major factor for many people (esp. ones who will watch the movie but have no desire to even try the source material) is disingenuous.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad we're in agreement!

I came across as if I thought less of people for, say, only being interested in the movies instead of comics or wanting to watch attractive people and romantic relationships in series, but I really don't, sorry!

Not everything has to be motivated by DEEP INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS, and there's no shame in admitting to just wanting to be entertained. There is no need to be defensive, in either direction (NO MY LIKES ARE TOTALLY SERIOUS THIS IS A DEEP AND MEANINGFUL EXPLORATION OF THE HUMAN EXISTENCE, ETC.) or (WHO CARES IT'S JUST A MOVIE/BOOK/CARTOON STOP TRYING TO ANALYSE IT YOU'RE RUINING MY FUN GO PLAY SOMEWHERE ELSE WITH YOUR META AND CRITIQUES AND STUFF).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. The only big issue I have is with the people who make judgements about the source material without having consumed it to any meaningful degree (like the "Classic companions were all whiny and weak" example above). Other than that, I'm basically like, "You have your thing; I'll have mine." That doesn't mean that I don't get frustrated and anxious about the fact that I'm seemingly the only person who wants my thing, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Those quick judgements are a symptom of the underlying problem of people in general wanting to appear smart whether they do the research or not (I would know, I'm kind of doing it right now D:).

Well, I'm pretty sure I've seen people commenting on having read or watched all the things you prefer (source material first) and liking them better, so they're definitely out there; they're just drowned out by all the people attracted over the new stuff. It seems that you will have to go out of your way to find them. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And a certain subset of Classic fans are definitely partly to blame, too, since they'll insist that strictly New Who fans justify their lack of interest in the older stuff, which is jerky, but I still find the snap judgement of all my favourite characters based on one or two of the worst companions (Susan and Peri, usually) really frustrating.
