Agreed. I have scars from several different things and most of them are easily hidden. But I wish I didn't have to hide them. I wish I could have them out and be able to see them during the day, because just seeing them gives me strength and a boost. They're proof of what I've gone through and survived.

Come to think of it, isn't this how children view their scars?

"I got this after a dog bit me."

"I got this one from a surgery."

"I got into a fight with so and so."

"I was hit by..."

Etc.

I think they have the right idea.

Both my mother and I have pretty noticeable scars on our legs (hers from major and repeated surgeries, mine from being a dumbass), but it doesn't stop either of us from wearing shorts in the summer. Fuck the haters, and take pride in your stories.

It always annoyed me that you couldn't really give Femshep scars in ME1. I mean, you could, but they were really faint and far less badass looking that Dudeshep's scars. Most of them are barely even visible, especially in the lighter skin tones.

I have several scars all along my shoulders / upper chest, but I wear sleeveless tops all the time.

Not because I'm "proud" of them, which I'm not, but I just don't care enough to go out of my way to hide them.

Haven't gotten a single comment about it.

This is how I feel about all scars and evidence of bodily injuries. So badass. So awesome. I don't get turned on by them or anything, but they're just so awesome and distinctive and they blare for the whole world to see that you are unique and your history has had something interesting in it and you had a Noodle Incident in your past that may or may not have been totally epic, but definitely left a lasting impact on you and which you survived just fine.

Also, this is kinda OT and I'm probably totally projecting my own opinions here, but this is why I get impatient with Avengers fics in which Tony doesn't want anyone to see his arc reactor. WTF man, that thing is glowing physical evidence of his awesomeness and ingenuity and strength of character!

I have scars all over my torso and my legs, so I definitely can relate.

IDGAF who can see them, and like you, I'm proud of them.

Haters to the left.

I have surgical scars all over my chest (and a few on other part of my body); I've had a big one right down the front (over my sternum) as long as I can remember. I feel the same way you do; I love characters with scars. And I wish more female characters were allowed to have scars, and not just "cute" ones... d-:

......wow. It truly is as if I'd made this secret in my sleep

I always put scars on my characters. I have a few scars on my body and I kind of love them all.

I'm really annoyed my awesome eyebrow scar from ME1 gets healed in ME2. Fuck you, Cerberus, I liked that scar.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so annoyed about that! I even made up a story for my Shepard's scar... I turned out to care about it more than he did.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated that too! I couldn't believe it when my badass eyebrow scar got healed!

I know, I was annoyed too. The latter two games don't even give you options to put new scars on Shepard, either. :( I could've gotten more scars since being rebuilt, Bioware!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much anon - I've always thought I was the only one who felt that way about my scars. I did a Google search once to see how to make an injury scar better and found nothing.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could this. Unfortunately, every time I dare to wear shorts I get a barrage of questions about "how did you get those?". It's kind of painful for me to explain my long history of self-harm. I wish I had a cool adventure behind.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. Some of mine are self harm too (not all, I also have some from surgery, and some that were accident, most notably a burn scar). I agree it's still very awkward when people ask. But to me, that time of hurting myself is long gone and to me personally, the scars do not have a negative connotation anymore and I sort of like them, is the sense that they tell my history. It just suck to me that other people can be so negative about them.

Anyway, *hugs* - hope you are in a better place now.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I used to lie about my self arm scars and would say the cat did it when people questioned and felt ashamed of myself. Now when noisy strangers ask me questions I tell them 'Freddy Kruger did it' or "A ninja fight' and when they get pissed at my answers and do they 'well if your just going to be flippant', I tell them then maybe they shouldn't ask strangers about their scars.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Would you go renegade just for scars though? Haha. I liked the ME1 scars, as subtle as they were, but was sad ME2 took them away.

I thought I'd like the renegade scars (I played Renegade regardless) but then they got so fucking out of hand, I had to heal them. /shallow)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I try to avoid taking philosophy from t-shirts, but 'Scars are tattoos with better stories' has always seemed like sound thinking to me.

(Small, faint facial scar here. Almost never noticed IRL, but I actually like it when people do.)

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-07-30 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah man, I hear you. I have a bunch of scars here and there, mostly unnoticeable because I have such a light skin tone.

Some of them are just frigging weird. "Oh yeah, I got that when my sister hit me in the head with a baseball bat."

"Oh yeah, I got that when a cow bit me."

Fun times.

Scars are part of you. They tell your story. Never feel ashamed for having one.
