Yes, this. I was pretty confused at first but this makes sense.

There's a fanartist category at the Hugos, for example, and I can't imagine they'll ever have one for fanfic.

The 'fanartist' category at the Hugos has absolutely nothing to do with 'fanart' as is being discussed here. Hugo 'fanart' refers to an artist that is a fan, or has contributed to fanzines, or who does not make a 'substantial portion' of their income from their art (ie, is not a 'pro')(which is also totally arbitrary and ridiculous, as very few 'working artists,' even Big Names, can actually make a real living off their art nowadays - thank you, 'art should be free!' culture).

Any actual 'fanartist' as being discussed here would likely be ineligible, as there are few pieces of 'fanart' actually published, for reasons detailed elsewhere in this thread (primarily copyright).

Basically, there are two kinds of fandom: new (characterized by Tumblr, kinkmemes, and a greater percentage of 'younger' fen) and old (characterized by zines [which still exist!], smaller general 'genre' conventions, generally older or lit/acafen, and longer livejournal posts), and while there's crossover, the Hugos come from and represent the old school more than anything else.

See also: their category for 'fan writing,' which has nothing to do with fanfic, more's the pity.

-- Anon who works in the genre publishing industry as an art director, has voted in the Hugos, read the Hugo rules for fanart upon discovering the category and been appropriately befuddled, and is actively involved in both 'sides' of fandom. [/pointless bonafides]
