(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, I guess there are those big names or whatever on DA who illegally sell comics and shit, but in the long run, I don't see people having rec links and passing around quotes and making special graphics dedicated to fanart like you do with fanfic. It is all about what you choose to focus on I think. There is so much respect for fanfic if you look past the basic veneer of "Ooooh, pretty!" especially when you take into account the ease of removing watermarks on fanart to remove all of the artists claim, while this is really rare with fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)This is where, at least in one of my fandoms, most fanartists get their recognition. Because there are so many more authors than fanartists, the fanartists can pick who they want to make art for, which means they associate themselves with BNFs and friends.
I think this depends on the fandom you're in, because I found myself nodding along while most of the comments were basically asking if the OP is on crack. Some fandoms have phenomenal artists and, since pictures are so much easier to remember than the written word and they're fewer and farther between, they get more recognition.
Imho, though, good fanart often takes far more effort than good fanfic. You need more and more expensive tools, you have to have a good understanding of light, shading, human and animal anatomy, perspective, composition, and movement, and it's somethng you have to work at with little real world application compared to writing. Writing fic is an extension of all the grammar, literature, and vocabulary lessons you've ever had.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 12:14 am (UTC)(link)I think that, while this isn't necessarily true, fandom often makes it seem that way simply because the threshold at which fanfic starts being considered 'good' in fandom is ridiculously low. Even the really "epic" stories by BNFs that get praised for the incredible characterization and plot are mediocre when compared with the works of truly talented writers. If your fandom is large enough, you can consider yourself extremely lucky if there is one, maybe two fanwriters who are somewhat talented, and even in those cases their stories are usually full of amateurish mistakes.

Then again, I consider a lot of Big Name fics to be actually not all that great. I know this sounds cliche, but most of my favorite writers in fandom are not big name writers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-30 06:04 am (UTC)(link)I don't think that level of '...can't.' exists in the fic community. You put a gun to someone's head and tell them to write a drabble, odds are what they come up with will at least be recognizable as human language. You put a gun to my head and tell me to draw a recognizable character, you will be firing that gun in short order.
