I'm happy someone got something positive out of those books.

You are not alone. I was raised in a cult and fandom was the only link I had to the outside world and that's where I learned that there wasn't anything wrong with me and the way I felt.

When you say "cult" do you literally mean a cult or a very religious upbringing? Just curious.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Literal cult. Fences, guard patrols, deprogrammers, changing our last name, #6 on the FBI's list at one time, kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit. You seem amazingly well adjusted and cool from what I can tell via online. Glad you got out and are alright.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :D

branch davidians?

House of Yahweh. Though some of the Elders had associations with branch davidians.

Wow. Good on you for getting out. Are the rest of your family out as well?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I drug them out with me and luckily it wasn't as bad for us as some got it.

Which one? I was Children of God/Family of Love/The Family growing up. Ah, childhood.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
House of Yahweh. They've recently been quieter after a scandals most notably including a coverup involving a church elder molesting his stepdaughter.

Huh, hadn't heard of those ones before. Seems about the standard: charismatic leader who eventually goes power-mad and starts molesting the girl-children, paranoid preparation for the apocalypse which is supposed to happen on a certain date, which gets pushed back or explained away....

You know, one of the weird things about cults is how similar they are, when you get right down to it. You think you're such a special snowflake when you're in it, and for the first few years of getting out of it, but then you see 500 variations of the same bullshit.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
The wiki is laughably sparse about all the crap that went down there but, yeah, they don't exactly get points for originality.

[personal profile] visp 2012-08-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess: leader gets random ideas about how you should eat, dress, or wipe your ass, and the next thing you know, you're all doing it because that's obviously the only way it could be done, highly regimented and scheduled, never a moment to yourself, physical abuse of children is standard punishment, sexual abuse of the girls happening discretely by whichever of the male adults have a thing for the kiddies, a shit ton of memorizing the cult literature and reciting it like little parrots, etc?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all this and more with the sexual abuse not being limited to girls and viciously horrific justifications and instilling heaps of guilt and self hatred in children.

[personal profile] visp 2012-08-05 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, the Judeo-Christian cults tend to be pretty homophobic, which keeps the men away from the boys and the women don't sexually abuse as much, for some reason. How'd they change that? And viciously horrific justifications? Ours were just what you'd see on NAMBLA or something, you know, all "It's love and love is a beautiful thing and you want to make [whoever] happy, don't you?" plus a deeply enforced concept of adults always being right and to be obeyed at all costs, not to mention most kids being desperate for any protection/attention/affection, no matter the cost. Sickeningly wrong and saccharine, but nothing I'd call vicious.

> "It's love and love is a beautiful thing and you want to make [whoever] happy, don't you?" plus a deeply enforced concept of adults always being right and to be obeyed at all costs

sad thing is, this passive aggressive bullshit aint limited to cults

my ethnic culture emphasizes obedience and the "great wisdom of the elders"

lets just say some peoples wisdoms were crap

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh they were homophobic as hell. Male-on-male rape was considered deserved if it happened for the boy not being righteous or masculine enough and a myriad of other justifications that make me sick to think of. In fact the man who raped his daughter had been molested and raped repeatedly by different men as a child and generally spent his adulthood being as much of an asshole as he could to women to "prove" how much of a man he was.

[personal profile] visp 2012-08-05 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus. That's fucked up even by cultist standards.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-08-05 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't really acknowledged or promoted outside of whispering about the victims so I guess I always assumed other cults had some of that as well.

Or maybe I just lucked out and grew up in a particularly twisted cult. I mean the mandatory "X-rated sermon series" with bonus bullshit science that were mandatory could give me enough for a book.

What can I say, people are not only shits but rarely unique in their shittery.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that the one with the "childhood manuel" about leader's son that included a ton of weird sexual encounters the kid had and then as an adult he committed murder-suicide?

Either way, I'm glad you got out as well.

[personal profile] visp 2012-08-05 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Poor fucker was supposed to be the shining leader for all of us. Less publicized is that he was actually trying to question the woman he killed in order to find his mother (the current leader) and kill her, and then lead all the other ex-kiddies in a good old fashioned 'cleansing.' But he freaked out, killed her, and them himself.

Eek. My upbringing was seriously cult-like and fandom was my window out as well, but I can't even imagine. *thumbs up*
