Amen, sister!

Unfortunately, people are still very uncomfortable with the concept of a woman enjoying and craving sex. People don't get nearly as bothered if the teenager in question is male.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's because we all prudes and cannot appreciate the genius of graphic underage bestiality incest rape.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Rape is rape, regardless of age. But I don't believe in shaming consensual sex.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
There's a massive difference between writing about 12 year old girls having sex because you're interested in female sexuality, and writing about 12 year old girls having sex because you have a raging hard-on for man/girl relationships.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
True, that being said, it's pretty normal for teenage girls to desire an older man. I did, when I was that age.
Would you find the subject material acceptable it was a woman write her turn-on was older man/teenage girl?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's called Fifty Shades of Grey.

To be fair, I think those characters are 21 and 28 - not quite what you're reaching for, I think.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I would find it acceptable if the genre was erotica. I have no problem with GRRM writing about his man/girl kink for an audience that wants to read it, but ASoIaF isn't supposed to be man/girl erotica and it mostly seems to be there because GRRM can't help himself.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. That's a fair opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I really appreciate you being civil about this topic of discussion.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
E. L. James did it. And it is very successful.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the main character in 50 Shades is not 12.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Could have fooled me...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Besides, there are lots of young boys in the books who not only want sex, but they are not virgins anymore. What about that? No one gets uncomfortable when the boys want it.

Yes, many women in the books are forced to start a sexual life when they are not ready or willing. But others want it, and that shouldn't be a problem (Cersei and Jaime started really soon, Dany likes sex, Asha is quite proud of her sexuality and desires as well and she was probably like that when she was younger, etc etc etc).

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Someone that gets it. I don't know a lot about this series in particular, but I do take issue in shaming of young women's sexuality.

Rape is wrong. Being forced into any sexual activity is wrong.

But I have problem when a young woman CHOOSES to have sex/expressed her sexuality, and everyone turns around and tells her she's 'confused' and she doesn't know what she's talking about. Don't people understand how demeaning that is to women? If teenage boy can choose to have sex, so can teenage girls. They are just as capable as any male their age.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I think as well! Thing is, he settled his books in a very medieval-ish world, and he doesn't tries to make it better. To me, the violence is part of the realism in the books (including sexual violence), and not glorified at all. If the characters want it, and it's not written in a way where it objectifies the girls, I don't see anything wrong. Women in A Song of Ice and Fire are very well developed, and the sex is part of their reality and some of the stories. Why is that wrong?

What saddens me is that even feminists see a young woman DESIRING sex as a bad thing, apparently :/ being one myself, I get sad some people are so narrow minded.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Those are sex-negative feminists. The sex-positive feminist community shares your beliefs on women and sexuality. I think you might like that sect. There's a great sex-positive feminist community on Youtube for one. Most of my favourite channels (FeministWhore, Divinity33372) are dedicated towards sex-workers rights activism; another issues that's treated very poorly by sex-negative fems.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna check those channels out, thank you very much! Unfortunately, it's very common to find this kind of "feminist" on the internet :( in real life, I never had any problem with most activists, but since tumblr, livejournal and social justice... Well, everyone knows what kind of stuff most of them say.

The women are "well developed"?

When their main motive is MY BABIES BABIES BABIES?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
...Have you even read or watched the show past like the second episode?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yea cause Sansa and Arya both have babies.

Right.

Yes, because Brienne, Asha, Arya, Sansa, Catelyn (yes, she cares about her kids. No, that's not her only point), Cersei, Daenerys, Arianne and many others just care about babies. Riiiight.

No one gets uncomfortable when the boys want it.

Hi! I do. I really, really do, when it's barely pubescent boys and grown-ass adult women.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you do, that's good, and I am inclined to agree with you (on the barely pubescent thing at least, not so much older teens).

But unfortunately, that's not the majority opinion in Western society.

Yeah, I realize this more and more every time I have to recoil from yet another scene that features a young boy getting a dramatic "sexual awakening" at the hands of an adult woman when the author just condemned the reverse scenario (young girl, adult man) in the same damn story.

+1

I don't want to read about it, period.
