Website design & related software questions

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
This is a weird question but this seems to be the place for random questions lately, so...

I work for a small business, and my bosses want me to revamp their website. I've designed sites before but it's been a few years and they were pretty simple. My bosses want a flash animation/slideshow type thing, and I've never worked with flash, plus since I'll be working on it in between my other job duties, I'd rather do it the quickest/easiest possible way. I know there are a lot of different programs out there now, but I don't even know where to begin. I may just be in over my head and they need to hire a person specifically to do the site for them, but they don't have a lot of money to spend and I would rather learn how and do it myself if at all possible.

Are there any programs anyone can recommend? From my research Dreamweaver seems to come up a lot but is there something better out there? And can anyone suggest any sites or tutorials that will help me out with the flash stuff?

Any suggestions/advice anyone could give would be great!

I actually learned a little about this in high school. I can't believe this knowledge would be useful someday (I'm not particularly fond of flash websites; I remember having a slow internet connection orz).

Anyway, we learned using Macromedia Adobe Flash (which is sadly a paid program, but you could download the trial version.

This site has a tutorial of more or less how we did it:

It's actually not very complicated, but unfortunately, my knowledge of these things is on a very beginner-level and I couldn't tell you how resources-consuming efficient it is, or how to troubleshoot or solve any bugs that might pop up, or what have you. Sorry.

If you want do to a slideshow, it's best not to use flash, as it is slow, resource intensive, and limits the portion of the site traffic that can, or wants, to use flash.

I reccomend using a javascript slideshow like this: http://sandbox.scriptiny.com/tinyfader/

I don't know how restrictive your bosses are, so ask them if you absolutely have to use flash.

They don't care how I do it as long as it looks the way they want it to, but the couple people I've asked were all like "Flash, you've gotta use flash!" so that's what I was going by. That looks perfect, though, so thanks!

1. Do not do a Flash slideshow - look up jQuery slideshows. It's more cross-platform compatible and there's a lot of good tutorials out there.

2. Because it's not your full time job, I don't think you need to shell out the cash for Dreamweaver. Something like Notepad++ or TextMate.

3. If you're starting from scratch, I really recommend using Wordpress and just editing a template and using a plugin for the slideshow.

Wordpress was the first thing I looked into, but I couldn't get it to work. I read up on how to make a static front page (since this is a more traditional website rather than a blog) but Wordpress wouldn't save any of the changes I made to the layout. I went through a bunch of troubleshooting through Wordpress and the only advice they could give was there were permission issues with the database but as far as I could tell, everything was fine.

Since I'm not really creating a brand new site, just changing some elements about the current one, I thought it would probably just be easier to find some tutorials on the things I was unsure of (like the slideshow) and do it myself.

Anyway, thanks. I'll have to check out Notepad++ and TextMate.

If you're starting from scratch, how about using Wix? Plus it's a drag and drop stuff while still looking classy, so after you have it upped you can always ask another people to maintain it because of the drag and drop feature :D

I'm not totally starting from scratch but drag and drop sounds tempting since the rest of my job keeps me pretty busy and doesn't leave a ton of time for this project. I'll have to check out Wix and see if I can use it with the current layout to make the changes I need. Thank you!
