LOL. My Dad has weird taste--on one hand he likes really mainstream stuff (The Avengers, for example), and on the other hand he'll stumble upon things that are geeky and less well-known and get really into them (he likes Felica Day's The Guild more than I do, and avidly follows her new YouTube channel now). He also loves corny teen comedies (Teen Wolf--the movie, not the show--Clueless, etc) but can't stand most anime (but he loves Cromartie High School, Death Note, and Hetalia). I can't figure him out.

I think I must get my geeky side from him though...

Just for reference, how old are your parents?

My parents are in their 60's and I'd think it would be hilarious if they were hipsters.

But them, my mother's a flamboyant musician and my father is an eccentric in more introvert ways.

Aren't you supposed to be all embarrassed and disapproving of your parents' choice in music/videos? Isn't that like, one of those things kids are supposed to do?

I was never embarrassed by my parents, or disapproving of their tastes in music and whatnot. Except for the occasional bigoted sideswipe at various peoples by my dad, i really liked my parents, had fun hanging out with them, and enjoyed learning about the things they liked. Even started liking some of them, myself.

I don't get being embarrassed by your parents unless they're doing something that would be embarrassing if done by *anyone*.

Yeah, if they're over 45 then they're just hippies, clinging to their past. The key is, they're not into the stuff they're into 'ironically' they're just into it.

I take exception to this. I'm well over 45 but too young to have been a hippy when being one was hip. *s*

I like new things and old things. Music from the 40s (and classical from earlier), up through to today. Same with movies and books. *shrugs*

I prefer the term...eclectic.

45 is too young to be an original hippy. All of the original hippies are in their 60's.

Parents were hipsters before hipsters were. I mean, isn't that the stereotype that all parents are like "in my day, we had real movies/music/etc!" and act like they're tastes are superior to others?

Ahahahaha, oh no! Well, my parents (dad & stepmom) like 2 Broke Girls and Big Brother and corny shit like that; don't feel bad. Parents need our supervision with these things. (At least they like Homeland, too. My mother's a fucking hopeless case...though she did see Moonrise Kingdom, oddly enough.)

IDK. Unlike some of the people above, I do think hipster still has some meaning, perhaps because I went to a super hispter-y college, and now live near Williamsburg. There are definitely people out there that are most easily described, IMO, as hipsters.

But I really don't think you can define someone as a hipster on taste alone. It's also style, and attitude. It's like, you're not a hippy JUST because you like music from that era. You're not a hipster just because you like indie movies, or whatever you think defines it for your parents.
