Characters with your name.

Brought on by the Sprawl Trilogy secret - anyone else have any books/movies/etc. that they just can't read/watch/etc. because it's so weird that one of the characters has your name?

I read Neuromancer once, barely, and never again (I've tried, it's just too weird).

Happily, most characters with my given name are not in media that I look at, like a certain game or a book I don't like.

Oh, and they're usually bad guys...

For some reason I'm actually not weirded out by this. It's probably because my name isn't actually all that common in fiction, but idk when it happens I just sort of smile and wonder if I'm anything like the character and then I move on.

Not yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens eventually. My first name is Haley, which was somewhat common but not SUPER common in my generation, but it steadily rose in popularity and peaked at #28 in 2000 for baby names in the USA, so I wouldn't be surprised if that name pops up more and more as those kids grow older.

(I think there have been Haleys in fiction before, I've just somehow avoided them so far.)

I watched Brothers & Sisters for a while. The gay brother is named Kevin. That was absolutely surreal for me. Turned into a drinking game with my roommates: take a shot every time he cracks up when the character is addressed.

I do it with comedians with my name too, but almost anything else that features someone with my name I just avoid because it feels weird. No idea why stand-up and a lite soap are exceptions.

I actually find it weirder when characters have the names of my close friends and family, because I've been toying with changing my name for years so I'm not super attached to it. But like, I can never watch Boys Don't Cry because omg, that's my best friend's name in there, gahhh, and anything with a romantic hero called Noah I have to avoid because I immediately picture my brother.

My name is Aurora, so I'm not super used to hearing it used to refer to anyone other than me (though it's apparently becoming much more common). When I do hear it in fiction, it usually startles me at first, but I get used to it pretty quickly. It's never been enough to hinder my enjoyment of a series.

Characters don't have my name, because it's uncommon but not weird. It used to make some of my soils classes kind of weird, though.

Hotch's wife in Criminal Minds has my name, though spelled differently (She's Haley, and I'm Hayley). It was really awkward whenever she was brought up, but she was a minor character so it didn't bother me too much. Well, until she died, of course, then it was really bizarre.

Er... Actually, I'm the opposite.
I only kept my Twilight books because one of the Volturi is called Corin. They don't even turn up in the story, it's just a page at the end, and the books themselves suck, but I kept them anyway just for the name. :S

I have never read Daphne DuMaurier's "Rebecca". (I kinda want to because it sounds interesting... but it would just feel weird.)

There has been only one book that I've come across where the character had the same name as me. And that's because I was named after that character. So, to answer your question, no.

I actually get excited if I see my name in fiction somewhere--but only if it's spelled right. Otherwise I get pissed and that does kind of put a damper on my enjoyment of the book/movie/show/etc., but not to the point where I can't watch it.

That's me with Otoyomegatari initially - the main character's name is spelt slightly different from mine (at least in the scanlations I read) but considering how uncommon it is in the first place it felt kind of weird. Then the English localisation came out and they spelt her name even more differently from mine, now I'm more okay with it.

I watch a show that has TWO characters who have my name--a guy and a girl. They actually date. And it's never acknowledged that they have the same name, because their nicknames are different, and they're often referred to by their surnames.

I love it. My name doesn't get used much in fiction, though, and almost never for major characters. Probably the most famous one used a code name instead and was obnoxious to boot.

My name is so rare I have never seen it used in any media.

However, I once had all my books signed by a beloved author of mine. One of her books after that had a name similar to mine. It was only one letter off and pronounced very similar. However, it wasn't my name and it wasn't weird because it was a one-line-mentioned middle name.

When I first started playing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, I freaked the hell out when Maya started calling me Nick. I was all "WTF? You never asked for my name! THE VIDEO GAME ILLUMINATI HAVE FOUND ME!!!" and then I realized that Nick was a nickname for Phoenix.

I don't have a huge problem with it, though it does make commenting on The Vampire Diaries a little awkward. It sounds so strange to talk about Caroline ships or Caroline in general when she has my name, haha.

What's way worse for me is when characters have my family members' names. Friends, fine. But family member names is just weird for me. I can't ever read smutty fanfiction if any of the characters involved has my family members' names, it's just way too weird.

Not really.

It's not often that characters go by my full name. (It usually gets shortened.)

And, I got to hear a certain character I like say my name in a really creepy-hot way, so I'm forever okay with characters having my name. Weird and shallow, I know.

Heh, I was actually relieved to find a character with my name who isn't completely unlikeable! (Naomi Wildman in Star Trek Voyager, even if I do double-take every time someone calls her name on-screen.) Previously, the only other Naomis I knew of were a stroppy supermodel, one of the worst TV 'journalists' I've ever seen, and an actor I honestly don't care about.

I go by my nickname more than my real name to the point that some people I know didn't realise it WASN'T my name for a long while. So I'm a bit disassociated from my real name, which has an alternate spelling than usually seen.

So while my real name pops up, it doesn't bother me. My nickname has never come up as a character name in anything I've watched/read.
