And Mulan was...?

[personal profile] visp 2012-08-31 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
A high-ranking noblewoman, so it's close enough.

I believe Meg's not included because she's a bit too mature. She has sex appeal and uses it and Hercules was not her first true love. Being betrayed by the man you love and finding your trust in love again, that's not a girl topic.
She doesn't fit the theme. I don't think it has anything to do with semantics and quite honestly I think your argument is weak. I don't think Disney Princess chooses them for their storyline, but for their marketing value.

The only real 'theme' of Disney Princesses is 'Disney female character that can be stuffed into a fancy dress.' Also, they needed to diversify a bit more - there's already half a dozen white princesses, so why stretch to include one more that doesn't really fit the bill and doesn't have any good wardrobe choices? You're getting a bit too abstract with the "she's too mature" thing - Jasmine's on there, and she made out with Jafar.

So you're actually agreeing that it's not that she's included because she a noblewoman? Why say that then?

Maturity does not only lie in sexuality y'know. Jasmine obviously is a teenager, nobody would ever guess Meg's supposed to be only 18. All the Disney Princesses have parents (sort of), she doesn't (for example).

1. Because noblewomen wear the fancy dresses.

2. You're now pulling out 'Having a Parent'? In a Disney movie? Snow White = dead parents, same with Cinderella, Aurora's parents are absent, Belle's mother is dead and father is a completely unparental child-mind, same with Jasmine. And Belle's plenty mature.

3. Meg's a great character but there's pretty much no way to put her in the Princess category.

PPPPPPFFF

Being betrayed by the man you love and finding your trust in love again, that's not a girl topic.

....and Rapunzel and Flynn is? (ok, he din't actually do it but she thought he did, and he did think about it a few times too).

Makerting value... in Disney from all places? Oh dear lord, help us!

[personal profile] world_eater 2012-09-01 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not gonna argue agains Rapunzel because you kinda did that yourself (not to mention their situations are not at all similar).

But... uh, I did not act surprised that Disney wants to market them? Why are you making fun of something I didn't express?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
you have to be kidding.

I'm pretty sure Meg's not included because the film didn't do as well as Disney would have liked.

Considering that Kida from Atlantis isn't included, and she is a princess... quite probably.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with you. I can see this.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-09-01 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
She's not included because Disney didn't consider Hercules popular enough. That's all there is to it.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

Also was accepted to become a princess (marrying the son of the chinese ruler in the 2nd movie), that didn't happen but...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling Meg isn't included because she's not a "token princess". Mulan and Hercules were generally on the same level of popularity, but Mulan is Asian, so Disney can throw Mulan with the "princesses" so the Asian kids will feel included.

Mulan was most certainly more popular than Hercules.

u kiddin? mulan was a commoner >:(
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-09-01 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
No she wasn't. She was the daughter of a war hero. Her family was not royalty, but they were wealthy.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
when did being wealthy mean not-commoner? jeez

She had a nice house and her father was famous enough to be known by the royal court - I'd say they were pretty well off.

I think they mean commoner meaning not a part of the aristocracy. Like Kate Middleton. Her family is well-off but they weren't titled.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, lots of people were known by the royal court like famous musicians and artisans and great warriors. unless the musicians and artisans and warriors had hereditary titles or were members of the royal family, or members of the imperial court, they were commoners.

her family was were well off. that I agree with. but not nobles.

Haha, yeah I really don't see the "princess" label as forcing semantics.
