fandoms that took you by surprise

[personal profile] helishdreams 2012-09-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about it the other day. My main fandom right now is the Avengers. The funny thing is, I just went to see the movie on a whim, went in with zero expectations, and came out obsessed. I wasn't really prepared to go into the fandom, it just happened. So this got me wondering - what fandoms are you currently in/have been in that took you by surprise? That you hadn't expected to get into, but you just did

I've been in fandom for a pop band (they're EXTREMELY popular over here) for the last 18 months or so. I normally like rock music, but they're basically my life and I'm loving it hardcore. I watched one of their videos one day (it came up in my 'Recommended' on YouTube) and that was it. I really didn't expect it. Well, I kinda did but I didn't expect them to take over my life quite so much, y'know? I haven't been in a bandom for years so it makes a nice change for me.

All of them.

The only different one was probably Final Fantasy because my friend was into it at the time. Otherwise, I've stumbled into them through picking up random games, going to the drive in to watch one movie and the other piqued my interest, clicking on the wrong video on the related Youtube tag, and grabbing a random manga off the shelf because my mom was leaving in 5 and I wanted one. haha

Ha ha. The Avengers, for sure. The only reason I saw it was because everyone had jumped fandoms so fast and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. (So, then I had to catch up on all the pre-movies, having not seen any but Iron Man and the crappy Hulk movies.)

A lot of my preferred fandoms and ships take me by surprise.

How I Met Your Mother. I was looking for fluffy sitcoms to cheer me up during a really bad period. I got approximately a year's worth of nonstop fangirling.

I only checked out South Park to see what the fuss was about, given that they looked like fucking construction paper cut-outs. I watched one single 40-second youtube clip way back in 2006 and fell head over heels in love, six years and counting.

I was a Marvel Zombie who didn't give a fuck about DC comics (outside of the occasional Batman story) for ages, until one day I picked up some ancient Superman comics in my dad's closet that I hadn't read since I was around nine and fell so hard and fast I pounced on my computer and pretty much started steadily inhaling the DC universe (often through illegal filesharing) until the reboot was announced.

And while I had been a huge fan of Marvel comics for quite a few years before seeing the Avengers, I had finally force-separated from it and completely shut down my love of it for survival purposes a few months before, and in the lead up to the film I had no anticipation (I did not see a single trailer, view a single TV spot, look at a single bit of promotional material or speculation, google it a single time, or give it a single thought. The only exposure I had to the pre-movie buzz was because I was in the HIMYM fandom at the time and some of the people I followed on tumblr had posted Maria Hill stuff and made "Kids, in the summer of 2012 your Aunt Robin decided to join SHIELD" jokes. I also didn't watch Thor until two days before watching The Avengers (and hadn't seen Iron Man 2 since 2010 and had therefore forgotten everything except "Fury and Coulson are awesome"), so I had none of that background to clue me into the world-building aweseomeness. The only reason it was more than a "whim" to me when I saw it was because I got super-excited after watching Thor, and because I saw it being highly acclaimed in a review-blurb (I sure as hell didn't read the review though) front-and-center on the Washington Post homepage a few days earlier. But I saw it the first weekend home from college and I have been absolutely smitten and trapped the entire summer, and it's still not going away. Fuck Marvel. They shouldn't give us great movies unless they're willing to make comics that don't make me want to strangle people.

Mine was Sherlock. (And only in terms of something to read)

I was looking for some new fanfiction to read since my last two fandoms were slow, and I started reading, and stayed for a few months.

The weird things is I don't ship Sherlock/Watson. I read a TON of it, but have no strong feelings for them at all.

And then the fandom exploded (and in my view imploded) and I tend to stay as far away from it as possible now.

Law & Order. I always thought it was a boring old-people-type show, but I started watching SVU when my cable package whittled down to nothing but USA and a handful of other channels. Once I'd caught up with all the reruns, I started watching the mothership on Netflix and now I'm obsessed with the whole franchise.

Oh geesh, Tiger and Bunny. :/ I don't even like anime, but a friend of mine was hyping it up so much that I saw it, and then...man, talk about a truly evil villain and overarching meaning. I won't pretend it wasn't pretty or flirty or fun, but the end conclusion after watching it was pretty much OH GOD WHY DID I UNDERESTIMATE THIS SERIES. IT IS AWESOME.

sherlock

always intended to lurk it since i shy away from participating in giant fandoms. i also tend to join fandoms only if i've already got a friend in the fandom pulling me in and i didn't know anyone who was into sherlock. and then reichenbach.

also teen wolf because the show is so terrible at first that i think it takes everyone by surprise

Teen Wolf - I only started watching it casually but over time I got more and more drawn in and I was just looking through my Tumblr and apparently I post more Teen Wolf than I thought I did.

Also, Primeval. I literally just decided to watch the first episode of series four because there was nothing else on TV, ended up loving it and catching up on the rest of it (which meant I was watching series four alongside series 1-3, which was weird but whatever), and before I knew it I was writing fic.

When I first played Blazblue I wanted to hate it. I thought it was just a lazy retread of Guilty Gear plot and character tropes with even more in-your-face fanservice and I was just GGRRRRR ARC SYSTEM I AM NOT FALLING FOR YOUR OBVIOUS BAIT.

After playing through the Story Mode and viewing the glory of Trollzama I realized the creators knew exactly what they were doing and weren't afraid to make fun of the tropes they were using and now it's one of my favorite games of this console generation. :>

The Losers. I thought the movie was kind of silly, only watched it because it had Papa Winchester in it, and though i found Cougar hot as hell, i just didn't think about it too much.

And then a friend linked me to a Losers fic and *wham bam, thank you Jensen*, i was hooked.

AVENGERS FANDOM. ♥ MY HEART. I love them all so very much. And I sure wasn't planning to get into SPN fandom, but I watched a few episodes and...well, y'all know how it is.

same thing happened to me with avengers! I went to the midnight screening but I wasn't really that excited because I wasn't too sure what the deal was with it. And now I totally love it. That said, I'm not really in the fandom as such. So. Uh. Basically I went in with zero expectations too but I don't really read fic or anything.
I'll just go now.

Edit: actually, Homestuck is probably a better example! I read it because I wanted to know what the hell people on my dashboard were freaking out about and didn't expect to actually grow to like it and consider it a primary fandom of mine. Originally I was pretty annoyed and grumpy about reading it because I was so damn confused about everything. Then I grew to care about the characters but not the plot (because I didn't understand it) and then I began to just... love everything. And now here I am. A fully fledged fan! I never really expected that to happen, but I think that's sort of the thing with Homestuck. If you make it through the whole thing, you will probably grow to love it even if at first you were just like "wtf is this."

Stargate Atlantis was by far the most unexpected. I knew very little about the show but one of my friends was in love with it. One day when I had nothing else to do, I caught a marathon; after an episode or two I was hooked. (That was about the time season two started, I think?) Pretty much immediately after that I found the fandom. (And am I glad I did! Some of my best memories are from that fandom.)

Yes, that's me too. It's still my main fandom even when it's dying (or being overtaken by Sparkies and Mitchell fen when McShep and GEN writers moved on).

Bah! A couple of weeks ago I went looking for new McShep fic and was so disappointed at how quiet the comms were. I miss the good old days of SGA fandom.

SHERLOCK SHERLOCK SHERLOCK.

"Oh look, this show seems like something that would be pleasant to watch on Netflix and then forget about. I guess I have a spare hour and a half to watch it."

I found it right before Series 2 started.

REICHENBACH HAPPENS.

"Well, it appears this show has become a mild obsession. I'm sure I'll forget about it in a month though."

NINE MONTHS HAVE PASSED. WHAT. HOW.

Fuck it. It's part of my life now I guess. . .

Whose Line Is It Anyway? of all things. I watched the show when it was new but about five-ish years ago I rediscovered it in reruns (they used to play it on ABC Family at midnight on weeknights and I would always record the episodes). Somehow I ended up joining a forum that had all the episodes to download, watched every single one, and discovered there was a fandom. The show has a ridiculous amount of slashy innuendo, and despite the fact that those guys are all old enough to be my dad (maybe even grandpa for a couple of them?) and not exactly conventionally good-looking I got really into fic and everything.

I don't think there's anything else...no other fandom that I've gotten really into has been surprising at all.

Inception. I avoided all live-action fandoms until I was surprised to fall so hard for this one movie, went looking for a few fanfics, not expecting much (since it was just one movie and not an entire series like I was used to), and found this huge, active, and amazing fandom with fic that blew my mind. I was going through a rough spot at the time and it was the best therapy.
