Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

I've just spent the last six years working 70 hours a week at my demanding ladder-climbing job and justifying that I didn't want to go out to see RL friends because I was so tired at the end of the day. Besides, my Internet fandom friends were right there. I didn't have to go anywhere. It was so easy.

Now I'm nearing age 40, and I don't have any real-life friends, no boyfriend... nobody. It's frightening and very lonely. And I know it's because I didn't get my ass up. Sooner or later, even friends will "get your message" and stop calling you. And trust me, you don't want to know how empty that feels.

Go out. Be young. Be young face-to-face. You're not going to regret it.

Yes, because you regretted it, everyone will.

Newsflash: fandom friends are real friends, too. Face-to-face means jack shit in this day and age besides a warm body.

Jeez, someone's touchy over this. No need to be rude because a forty-year old disagrees with you.

Yeah, I agree. I'm always annoyed when someone's like "oh, I totally regretted doing x thing, so you shouldn't do it." People are different! Just because one person regretted something doesn't mean someone else will.

Anon was just giving advice and perspective, which can be taken or left. I think it's a topic that deserves all viewpoints.

I disagree that face-to-face means jack shit in this day and age. I agree that online friends can become real life friends, but online friends may not necessarily live by you, in which case you will see them more than likely not very often at all. Meeting someone face to face who lives in your area makes it easier to socialize OUTSIDE of a computer on a relatively day to day basis. You build experiences that exist outside of an online world.

In addition online friends are easier to lose touch of. They can disappear without any notice or forewarning, or you lose touch because you may no longer frequent the same fandoms or games, etc.

Granted I love my online friends and I'm not saying you shouldn't be friends with people online. I just find it so much more awarding when I can actually go out and DO things with my friends that are outside of a computer.

…But sometimes online friends become real life, face-to-face friends. Just because yours didn't doesn't mean other people's won't. Some of the people I spend the most time with IRL are people I met in fandom.

You say yourself you were too tired to give energy to friendship. Whether they are online friends or fandom friends, if you don't put energy into your friendships, it's going to be hard for other people to put energy into you. It sounds like OP is trying to be there for other people and prioritize friends who need her/him, even if they're not real life friends, and that's not a bad way to build lasting friendships.

But I'm sorry you're so lonely and unhappy, OP. I know how hard a consuming job can be. :(
