Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

I don't care what the subject matter is or how much you don't like it or bad you personally think something is, it's fucking rude to openly laugh at someone sharing their work in class. If you're an adult you should know this and be able to control yourself in public.

Maybe we've got a bit of a schoolroom cultural difference? Because my class was very giggle prone, and we laughed at silly things all the time?

(I'm assuming OP is in high school)

We also had a girl write a 6,000 word Harry Potter porn star AU with the names barely switched around, and had a great time with that. I include the author in this, she thought it was hilarious as well, and was aware of her limits as a writer.

So you've never, EVER lost control of your emotions at any point in your life? Like, you've reacted to literally every hilarious or horrible moment with the most mature and reasonable response possible?

Not talking about all of life everywhere but in a specific setting. And no, I have never lost control of my emotions and laughed openly or giggled uncontrollably at someone sharing their work in a creative writing workshop situation.

ikr? What the fuck is this?

Like if this happened in response to someone's ~mawkish sob story at an AA meeting, would everyone be like SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T CONTROL IT?

Yeah. If you're in a creative writing class of any kind, one of the first things you learn in that environment is how to say something nice about writing that is utterly horrible.

I can see how OP could be saying "Usually I don't have this problem, but this poem was just so bad I completely lost it despite knowing full well You Just Don't DO That" but I think it's also quite possible to read it as that she hasn't quite understood why that's a no-no.

The first thing I learned in my creative writing classes was how to take criticism.

How to take criticism, sure. But laughing in someone's face is never appropriate.

Admitting that humans have a very difficult time doing the right thing and will definitely fall short at times =/= saying that bad behavior is ok or we shouldn't make a real effort to be decent. I've messed up in this way before and I absolutely do not think it was ok just because it was an "impulse" or whatever. And I was only a kid when it happened.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I can agree it's not a good thing to do, but your coming to every thread and telling everyone how one time you did it as a kid and now you can stop laughing whenever you want to (I'm exaggerating, but to me, that's how it reads) is damn condescending. First of all, not everyone is you. Not everyone had your experiences and your reasons. If someone else accidentally laughed when told a teacher's son had died, maybe they'd apologize and explain, or just feel fine because they know it was bad but they weren't laughing about the death. I don't know, exactly.

And second, I just... it's... it's just something I'm not understanding. I mean, I agree that it's not good, and we should all try to be good, respectful people. But I'm picturing a serious case of the giggles that nothing can stop, here. The kind I used to get when I was overtired as a kid. The kind that you can't stop, no matter how you try. They are kinda rare, in my experience, but they can happen to everyone - professional whatevers, teachers, actors, etc. Seriously, ever seen bloopers of shows where tone person keeps ruining the scene by laughing and they do it over and over again? I can't tell if that's literally never happened to you and some other people, or if you guys aren't imagining that, or if it's something else.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what most people are probably imagining. This secret doesn't imply a uncontrollable overtired random case of the giggles, it says it's giggling at a poem because it was shitty. They couldn't get over how shitty they thought the poem was so they laughed openly at the person. That's not a case of random giggles or strong emotions or whatever, that's a case of being an immature ass. And it's not a case of ALL LIFE EVER OMG it's a very specific situation that this person was being immature about.

Have you never taken a creative writing or workshop course where part of the process is sharing your work with the group? Because honestly not seeing how people aren't understanding how rude and inappropriate this was. It's not a thing where the class was all having a good time laughing at different works as a group - it was one person openly laughing/mocking one person sharing their work in what should have been a relatively safe and mature group setting.

You seem to have a serious personal problem with me. I shared my story on two threads where it was relevant. Calm down.

I can't tell if that's literally never happened to you and some other people

It's never happened to me, and I'm guessing not to several other people on this thread either. But even those who have said they relate to it point out that you can excuse yourself from that situation if you really, really cannot control yourself. That's the responsible thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I mean, I lose control sometimes when my gf says stupid shit and makes me so angry and I really can't control my emotions and how that manifests. My hands just fly and I can't stop myself. I try to explain afterwards that she shouldn't say such things that she knows makes me angry because I can't control strong emotions like anger and frustration. I totally understand OP because sometimes you just can't help it.
