As I am a fan of Homestuck who does not participate in the actual fandom, could somebody please tell me what is so terrifying?

I had to lock the first post I ever made about how I was enjoying Homestuck fandom because strangers were still commenting on it a month later saying I was horrible and should die.

It wasn't even because of my opinions on canon or social justice stuff, it was because they thought I was disrespecting the fandom.

Honestly, I've found that when you look past the fringe parts of the fandom (the ones who have never read the comic and just draw one hundred Eridans because he is kawaii), it's not much different from other fandoms.

We're a bit overenthusiastic, certainly, but the majority of Homestucks I've spoken to (on Tumblr, no less!) have be respectful, polite, and all around good people.

If you judge a fandom only by its bad members, then every fandom is terrible. Every single one. It's not fair to paint us all with the same brush because we happen to have a few more bad apples than most. That just comes with being a larger fandom.

Homestuck fandom is basically like New York City. It's FUCKING HUGE, so of course there are some crazy people. There are every kind of people, nice people and jerks and nice people who are in a bad mood today, brilliant driven people and fun slackers and dumbasses on the streetcorners screaming about THE TRUTH!!!1! to everyone who passes by.

There are some really nasty parts where you don't really want to go, and that's where the bad shit happens, so that's what's on the news, and what everyone outside of it sees the most of. But a more accurate picture is that it's a freaking amazing, vibrant, exciting place, where people are just doing a freaking ton of cool shit *all the time* and you can never keep up with all the awesome stuff that's happening, but you can be part of it and enjoy your little piece of it and the people you've made friends with, and how there is always more to discover, as long as you keep your head and watch out for which alleys you're going down.

I think it depends a lot on what part of the fandom you look at. I'm a pretty big fan and I find a lot of the Tumblr fanbase to be terrifying, but most of the Homestucks I meet at cons and the like are pretty chill.

I'm not in the fandom and just read snippets of HS, but I think this could apply to any huge fandom like this one.

I used to feel that way but now I'm one of those fans that's confused as to why people feel that way. I think it's because I stay secluded in my safe and sane part of the fandom.

But now I get sad when I see people generalizing the fandom as being totally horrible because I see so many good people there. :\

Might I ask why? People are always talking about terrifying fandoms without ever saying what it is that scares them. Too big to navigate? Ship wars? Wank? Drama? SJWs? TOO MUCH ENTHUSIASM TO HAAAAAAAANDLE? (That last one has been mainly my experience!)

The vast majority of the Homestucks I know are really chill people. We all love to ship, but we're really chill with others' ships (that is, where we don't just ship everything anyway). We love to have fun, are accepting and tolerant of one another, and don't pick fights. We are ok with differing opinions.

You have to find the right people, though. Fortunately I know a lot of my Homestuck friends irl so most of my fanning is done in not-traditionally-fandom spaces. I also love cons and have met so many awesome people at cons! I don't really do Tumblr (for other reasons) but from what I've seen it's also pretty cool, and you can just be a 100% lurker on Tumblr if you're more comfortable with that.

I'm IN the fandom and it terrifies me. I just skirt around the edges and try to avoid what I can.

hahah that's pretty understandable I guess. Basically what everyone else said- it's a really huge fandom and with huge fandoms comes great responsibility douchebaggery and they're usually the most vocal, so everything thinks they're what the whole fandom is like etc etc. I mean I didn't want to get in to homestuck because I was afraid of the fans! (I think I got this impression from fandom secrets back in the day). But then curiosity got the better of me.

Anyway you shouldn't be scared of us! You never know, you might SUBMIT join us one day. I promise it will be fun!!!! OBEY really truly. :o)

Most, if not all, major fandoms terrifies sane fans. But without them, I wouldn't be able to expand my interests in the first place.

And another acquaintance I know has turned me off even more with general hypocrisy of the 'let me tell you how much your fandom sucks BUT DON'T YOU DARE SAY A WORD ABOUT HOMESTUCK' variety.

There are MUCH weirder fandoms out there. Homestuck just has a huge fanbase, so you hear about way more creepy/bad stuff.

There are plenty of rational, funny, intelligent, cool, and creative people in the fandom. You don't even have to look that hard for them, really.

The only time I can be surrounded by a bunch of Homestucks and feel alright is at meets. For some reason, people at fandom meets/cons are much more friendly.
