everything is a rehash of everything. there's really no such thing as originality. but it's okay because sometimes things get rehashed in a refreshing way.

it's ok to take a break op. when you least expect it, you'll find something that piques your interest again. :)

Pretty much, yea. Maybe OP will return to fandom later, or maybe fandom isn't something that's going to always interest them. Either way, there's no use of them forcing themselves to read or watch things they aren't in the mood for, because they'll almost certainly come out hating them, and that defeats the purpose of doing it in the first place. Just give yourself a break OP, and see where it goes from there.

Yup, all of this!

This. I took a 6 year fandom break and feel all the better of it.

There is a such thing as fandom burnout.

Perhaps you're just "out-growing" fandom. And not saying that you out-grow it age-wise but most people don't keep the same hobby forever. Perhaps you just want to do new things. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, this, to a T.
You change, the world changes, nothing wrong about it.
And it has nothing to do with being "too old for fandom", but you simply want other things.

I figure OP's problem with it is more that it means they don't get as much to talk about with their fandom friends, and that can be an issue.
But you may find other things to talk about. And you may not, and the relationships may fade away.
And either way, there is nothing wrong with that, either...

It takes two to tango, but it also takes a music to dance it to.

don't feel bad, anon. like other commenters have said, you probably just need a break from it all. this break might turn out to be permanent - or, when you least expect it, you might suddenly read or see something that completely absorbs your fandom interest again, or find out about an older fandom that has a wealth of unmined fanfiction, or just suddenly be overcome with a wave of nostalgia and affection for one of your previous fandoms. the last three have happened to me when i've been feeling like you are right now, and I appreciated it, because it was good to be reminded that stories, even if they're constructed of age-old tropes, can still have new meaning and significance (to me, at least).

I get like this too OP! But I find that things move so fast that all you need to do is take a break for a couple months and eventually something will catch your interest.

For example with me there was a huge lull right before Avengers. It really does come in waves.

Well, I've learned to accept that while things are unoriginal, they can still have a different spin on it.

Like, in my English class my teacher pointed out that stories about dudes lusting after women and getting rejected for not respecting them was common, but each story was a little different because the writer was looking at the old work and trying to improve or build on it with their own take.

Though a lot of people nowadays are just writing what they know sells, so that's not always the case. I had to take a break from fandoms too for a while, so maybe that's what you need.

It happens. I burned out on fandom, took a two year break and will probably never be into it like I was.

I hadn't watched any live action TV since Proposal Daisakusen and Gossip Girl in 2007, but this year I watched Peep Show and The Wire and I am in love with them both and wish they had fandoms. You never know when something will grab you.

OP this happened to me, I find it hard to get interested in fiction anymore. Even on telly I watch more non fiction, or reality, or quiz shows! I know film journalists who believe there are no good films these days.

I think it's for two reasons. First is that there are only so many stories, and Shakespeare wrote them all anyhow. So of course after a while you get bored with the same old tropes. (Mind I never get bored with my favourite Shakespeare plays..)

Secondly, I think genuinely that films aren't as good because everything has to make the most money now, have you noticed how all major films are rated toward a teen audience? They are made for 12 year olds. So where Total Recall back in the day was an 18 certificate, and it was exciting and felt different, the remake is a 12A certificate, and feels meh. This seems to be a real trend. Not saying films didn't always have to make money, but there wasn't the same need to appeal to 12 year olds all of the time. I think this applies to television and books as well, everything has become bland, and just a bit samey, if something makes money a lot of copies come along.

Yes to this! After so many years online, everything is so... blah these days. Nothing new happens that is fresh and exciting.
