Homosexuals are just as capable of passing as straight as bisexuals are.

They are only capable of doing that if they're not effeminate men or butch women. But this isn't about passing as heterosexual, It's about living a dignified life in society.

Bisexuals in your example aren't opting out of having homosexual feelings: they're choosing to do what many homosexuals also do, which is pretend to be heterosexual and live a heteronormative lifestyle. That bisexuals feel the need to do so is just proof that they are just as affected by homophobia.

Like you said, bisexuals may choose to pursue a heterosexual relationship with genuine interest in a person of the opposite sex and be happy still, gay people don't have such an option.

Where do you get this idea that bisexuals who are open about their sexuality don't also face homophobia?

I don't think I've ever said bisexuals don't face homophobia...? What I did say is that the people affected the most by it are the ones in relationships with a person of the same sex as theirs.
Someone that has a chance to blend in into society while still having a chance to be happy like that has an advantage above those who don't- Bisexuals have advantages in life that gay people lack, just like a masculine gay man has advantages in life an effeminate gay mack lacks. This isn't something you have to be offended by when someone points it out.

Me too, anon. A ridiculous amount of my OTPs fall into this category. The only times I don't go for that type of pairing is when the characters are supposed to be May-December, but the actors cast are actually close in age...lol. (Do they think we can't tell?)

Just here to say I'm amused Alan Rickman is pictured twice, the pervy bastard ;)

I thought the whole point of Kankri was to be an obnoxious rambler. And rambling he does. Honestly? I can't even make sense of what he's saying and it's not because of the typing quirk. I read the sentences and can't for the life of me figure out what he's trying to say. Apparently it has to do with "social justice"? I don't know. I avoid Tumblr like the plague and I'm not really into the whole troll culture. It's all going way over my head.

To me, Kankri just seems like a pretentious, know-it-all prick who reads too much into things, so maybe people need to stop reading too much into him in turn? Just my two cents.

Edit: Oh and before someone writes up tl;dr: I am not interested in clarification about the deeper meaning of Kankri's words. I don't care what he's trying to say and why it's supposedly insensitive. Please don't take this the wrong way. It just sounds like a whole load of conflict I don't want to get involved in.

Re: White guy?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me? The only one going SJW was the person who glanced at the picture and made a dismissive statement about them all being nerdy straight white guys. If I were going to make such a statement about people I didn't know, then I would fucking look them up to avoid making an ass of myself. There was no reason to make that comment without the information except to get reinforcing strokes of "yes, and you're such a good person for being disgusted by it". If anyone actually cared about such issues, they'd have looked more closely, or looked him up, or already have known who he fucking is because (even though he isn't white) he is not actually terribly obscure. You don't need to have watched someone's work to recognise them, at that level, because they're around in macros and gifs and memes and clips and avatars.

I do find it interesting that when someone is unashamedly a nerd taking part in nerd culture, they are read as white.

ALL OF THIS.

Re: SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THAT SERIES

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Since when did fandom of any kind ever represent the majority of viewers? The majority of viewers are always "norms", "not-we" (watch Kinda), "non-fen": they see things differently, and care about different things. Lord help us if programmes tailored thenselves to the demands of fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that would not be Dr Who. That would be some long tie-in novel, or some separate drama, or an epic fanfic. It would not be the BBC's flagship family viewing adventures-in-time-and-space for all ages and all demographics.

And, frankly, fandom secrets would still be full of people who didn't get that's what was being subtly sketched in, and ranting about how it was stupid.

Re: SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THAT SERIES

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
You know, if people haven't seen Kinda, I can see that the whole "not-we" thing might sound very different. It's extremely appropriate (and pretty funny) if you're familiar with the story.

Guy that posted that Geneva thing, that only a joke, didn't mean to offend anyone.
On the plus side, I'm tumblr infamous! Are there any benefits to joining this club?

Re: Will-They-Won't-They TV couples

I love them. I think they did this trope best of what I've ever seen.

I'm glad it makes you happy anon!

Definitely Aeryn/John! They were so lovely, so much tension, so much emotion, even when they got together.

>pale relationships with male trolls before

pls elaborate??

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I dunno, that "otherblood" and "polyblood" stuff sounded like it was aimed at nonbinary trans people to me. That was the only thing in Kankri's dialog that really bothered me.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I think you're the first person I've "met" with that opinion, since I stay out of the fandom stuff. Matt Smith has led to several people in my circle quitting the show entirely, and I know that I'm only holding on with the vain hope that Eleven will improve (and the awesome Rory moments)- I don't know if it's Smith (who I've enjoyed in other things), the writing (aside from a couple of episodes, they all *feel* the same even if the trimmings are different), or a combination of the two.

All I know is... after everybody else let it go... she really, really doesn't like Gamzee.

Girl wants to get down with the clown... and probably knock half his teeth out, maybe break his arm... but what does she want to do AFTER?!

*eyebrows wiggle like mad*

I think OP meant ashen? Since she's done it with Tavros/Vriska and Eridan/Vriska.

Okay, how about Porrim? She wanted to challenge her society's gender roles but... it seems the Dolorosa was a Hive Queen raiser until she found the Sufferer. I suppose you could say that she also has a maternal streak with Kankri that got satisfied, or that she rebelled against her society in general, but those seem a little shaky to me. And it worked differently for the kids.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, really? I wonder how many of those people are exclusively New Who fans. :x I got started with NewWho but afterwards watched and loved the old series...Eleven reminds me of some of my favourite parts of the other Doctors, like Two's kindness and Five's fluttering and Four's moments of total alienness.

Well, I'm not going to write up that summary, just give a bit of perspective.

Andrew Hussie is known for "Making character you'd hate, then making you love them" That's kind of his thing.

The original trolls tended to be aspects of the internet that were annoying beyond their typing quirks in some way subtle or blatant.

The Ancestor trolls in particular seem to be Tumblr related. And while some find the caricature more offensive and some funnier, Kankri is very obviously supposed to be a dig at the SJW.

As for the typing quirks...

iF YOU, uHH, rEAD IT LONG ENOUGH I THINK, yOU KNOW, yOU GET USED TO IT.
