Hussie has indicated on formspring that Kanaya is an exception to typical troll pansexuality and is what humans would call a lesbian. Although that does make it pretty weird that Karkat would be so flabbergasted that humans have words to describe sexual orientation, when one of those words would apply to one of his closest friends.

He said "she has a kink for girls", which confirms a preference for girls but doesn't exclude guys. I'll side with the OP on this case.

I believe his exact words were that she would be by human standards, but wouldn't identify as one since trolls in fact lack a word for it, and by their culture's standards a sexual preferance would correspond to a minor kink most wouldn't even care about.

Though, as the OP actually points out, she has shown a desire to have a relaitonship trolls would consider romantic with several boys, so even that statement covers 1 to 2 quadrants at best, and again, the term wouldn't be one Kanaya would ever actually use.

Though there was some butthurt over the fact that her post scratch ancestor was apparently into guys and that's just hilarious.

Eh...that's not how I see it. There are certainly women who identify as lesbians who are a four, five, or six on the Kinsey scale, so I don't see that "if she were a human, she would be called a lesbian" as definite proof of non-bisexuality.

Yes, any troll can reproduce viably with any other troll and are thus all bisexual. Just like how humans can only viably reproduce with humans of the opposite sex, thus are all heterosexual.

For the sake of accuracy, it's worth pointing out that Kanaya has never had a pale relationship with anybody, though she thought she did toward Vriska. And presumably, sexuality only actually affects sexual relationships, of which trolls have only two. There has been some hints of her feeling black toward Gamzee, and, while unconfirmed, they are better evidence that Kanaya might be bi than anything you actually mentioned. Still, Hussie did express on the forums during Hivebent that he was strongly tempted to do a "of course Kanaya is a lesbian" panel like he did with Jade's grandpa being dead.

And Kanaya being a lesbian hardly counts as bi erasure when you've got twenty-three other trolls, Jake, and probably Rose picking up the slack. Let the fandom have its one confirmed lesbian character.

Having interest in men as pale or ashen partners doesn't indicate any kind of sexual inclination towards them.

Anyway, Kanaya's not a lesbian. Trolls don't have lesbians. I think she has a strong female kink and personally I'd never ship her with a guy - but if other people want to, what do I care?

Fandom has never used canon logic with ships. If a character is flat out straight as can be, they're the first to be used in yaoi. People are just more upset this time because messing with a gay character is less PC.

I'm just going to address the fact that in general, bisexual women are far less threatening to men than lesbian women, that the Claudine books were perfectly legal in England, but then The Well of Loneliness came along and then suddenly there was an obscenity trial, that turning lesbian women bi is a tried and true fiction trope, and lesbians keep getting proposals from men hoping to turn them bi/straight, and same with pressure from parents.

Women who don't want cock are terrifying to most of society. Lesbianism, to most everyone, isn't just about desiring women.

But, you know, people really really suck, and biphobia does its damage too :'(

As for fic though, why can't people ship what they want?

I'm gay, and I completely agree. While my otp is rose/kanaya, I also enjoy karnaya (both pale and red). I agree with you when you say it's bi-phobic.

I do want to say, though, that hussie said that "In human terminology, Kanaya is a lesbian, but sinces trolls don't have words like that, she has a "girl kink" in troll terms." I realize that some people will argue that since kanaya is not human, she isn't gay, but from a translators point of view, it's all about localization. I realize some people may disagree, but when you are told that lesbian=girl kink (as far as the two "languages"/cultures, not irl), then to me it seems rather clear that she is gay. That of course, doesn't mean you can't ship her with whomever you want (and who knows if her girl kink crosses into the pale quadrant, even), as people ship straight characters in with other people of the same gender, but canonically speaking..... well, I guess it all depends on if you take word of god as canon (personally, I do).

As others have said, OP - you are factually wrong. Kanaya is a lesbian (as others have mentioned, cited sources).

Additionally, it's not really bi-erasure when by sheer numbers there's more bisexual characters in the comic than anything else -- however it is funny you made that statement when in the same secret you are pissed that people claim that it's homosexual erasure to ship her with guy characters.

When you yourself are claiming bisexual erasure to not do that.

So, which is it? Is it erasure to ignore a character's canon sexuality or not? (I personally have a preference for keeping canonly gay characters that way since it's so rare to have them, but I really don't give a fuck what other people ship.)

idk, man, I'm kinda bothered by it, but that's because Kanaya and Rose are pretty much the only female characters who are strongly indicated to be into each other. All of the trolls are technically bisexual, but most of them wind up pairing off male/female. Aside from like, the bit of Gamzee/Tavros hinting. And Eridan hitting on everyone.

Actually I think it's safe to say that Troll sexuality are just as diverse as Human sexuality and that they simply have different norms.

And possibly different ratios? But ALL trolls are bisexual, I think that's kind of narrow minded too. Most maybe, but not all.
