Money still gone. Depressed now. (update)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Original thread: http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/669027.html?thread=580737635#cmt580737635

So I went to the bank first thing in the morning, and discovered I didn't have about $10 in my account. I had precisely 15cents. I literally had more change in my pocket than money in my account.

The banker and I went over all of the work I'd done to find the problem. We redid my math. We went line by line over a year's worth of transactions. Nothing, nada, zilch...no clue where my money went.

I ended up drawing a line in my register with my new existing balance, and have to start all over with my record-keeping. I will definitely be keeping closer tabs on my bottom line.

The banker talked about savings accounts and such. In the midst of this, I found out he used to work with my mother years ago. So we chatted a bit about family and stuff. Even though I didn't get my money back, he did help calm me down, and I felt better when I got up to leave.

Then his manager came over to see how I was and did we get everything sorted? "As best as we were able," I told her. Banker added in that we hadn't actually found the problem, so I didn't get my money back, but we'd gone over what to do from there. It was handled.

Manager started talking to me like I was twelve. Should have done this, should have done that. Why didn't you, and just what did I want the bank to do, hmmm?

I didn't say anything to her, just told the banker goodbye and left. I went from feeling almost okay to very upset.

I went home and called my mother to cry about it all. She offered me xanax. One of my sisters was at her house; she offered me prozac. I declined the drugs (mostly out of laziness. I didn't want to drive out of town for a couple of pills) and drowned my sorrows with chocolate shakes.

So that's it. I'm a doofus with money. The bank manager is bitch. And my mom and sister can hook me up if I need it.

That is so awful. Look, you are NOT a doofus with money. For one thing, you didn't let the problem go unchecked or fester, which is what I see a lot of people doing when it comes to money issues. For another, you had the records to go over with the damn bank. That manager is a fool to lose you and your business.

Anyway, when you feel better, I urge you to switch banks and let the bank know why they lost your business.

Things could have been much worse, I agree. I also agree that you should switch banks, especially since you have a record of your transactions that say the missing money should be in your account and the bank itself can't figure out where the money went. If my bank lost my money, I would definitely be out of there.

Better record-keeping is a plus. Definitely.

THIS. Honestly, OP, this sounds super sketchy to me. If they can't account for where your money went or when it left your account, they are NOT a good place to be banking. I had my bank card number stolen and a lot of money spent from my account without my knowledge (since I still had my card), and I had to go into the bank with an itemized list of the charges in my statement that weren't mine, but I did get my money back. If neither you nor the guy at the bank could figure out what you did wrong, it seems like there's a fairly good chance it wasn't you who messed up.

I agree with these two anons :( This sounds all kinds of sketchy to me, if you know your math is right and all that there's no way you should be THAT MUCH OUT.

Echoing the other posters: Get a new bank. Or, at least threaten to close your account. If you've shown that there should be no reason why your balance has dropped, then your bank should correct your account. If the local manager will not correct the issue or offer an adequate explaination for why your balance is off, then you should contact her manager.

I don't even understand how they could refuse to correct your account if you've shown that so much should be available. If last month's ending balance was $1,000 and only $500 was withdrawn since, then you should have $500. If your account only shows 15 cents then they should tell you where that $500 went if it doesn't show up in your transaction history. (I'm assuming you can see your account history online.) Is it invisible bank fees?

When they've corrected your account, I'd probably still get a new bank.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. I really hope your money reappears as quickly and magically as it disappeared. Maybe get a new bank? I had my card stolen and my bank had it canceled and refunded the lost money within days. Granted, it was a small amount and no doubt they would have given me a harder time for a loss as large as yours. But it just doesn't sound right. If you went through every transaction and they couldn't find where the money could possibly have gone, and they had no grounds on which to accuse you of taking it yourself, and especially if there were no withdrawals on record, which says to me it could be a problem with their system, how could they just send you on your way?

All banks are skeevy, but if your money just goes poof without a trace while in their keeping, saying "too bad, see ya around" is a special kind of skeevy.

Check with your state's attorney general's office - it should have a consumer protection division you can call. See if there's a banking commission you can report to, or if the AG's office can help. It costs nothing but time to try.
