Blah blah, others have said better about the word, but I think manga makes a great marketting pitch. OMG AMERICAN MANGA and the kiddies will eat it up. This is stuff that wouldn't be able to have a niche otherwise. If I ever publish something, and the only way to sell it is to call it manga, I'm not going to feel like I'm raping the language up the butt, if you know what I mean. Do you get your panties in a twist when people call manwha manga too?

I just wish that so many of those people getting published either A: had a style that didn't look like it was lifted in it's entirity from a how to draw anime book. B: Knew what anatomy was, and didn't draw the most bland ugly faces. C: Had a story that wasn't incredibly trite and lame and capitilizing on ever manga stereotype ever.

Don't get me wrong - there's one of them that has a good story, even if I dislike the art. And there's another that has art I'd kill to produce. But overall, the quality is a little low given the fact that these people are supposed to be professionals. "Good for a teenager" is holding someone to an awfully low standard.

http://spoonbard.deviantart.com <~ this is a friend of mine who won one of those contests.

I'm working on my own pitch as well so I know what you're talking about in some cases. I just try to look at it as the publishers are still fresh and aren't sure how to really choose good stories and art just yet.

17. I adore you.
I thought Tsubasa was gonna be cool, but it bores me to DEATH, and NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE ORIGINALS. I'm not saying Tsubasa itself is bad, but it's just an AU. Official AU, yeah. BUT IT'S STILL AN AU.

20. Oh I know what you mean. It took a few crack, smut RPs for me to really start appreciating my current obsession like I do. After that it was all a downhill trip to MASSIVE FAN CRUSH. ♥

7. ...:D ♥

8. Zelda is in my DNA. It's my childhood. I was playing OoT before I could even read that well. It's more than just a video game to me. Basically, WORD. (Liiink ♥)

17. But it's AU, isn't it? They don't really have to read/watch all the original works to enjoy the series. The characters in it aren't the same as the characters from the series they were drawn from.

Though I totally think CCS > TRC.

This isn't a jibe against the poster (I actually agree 100%) but I swear if I see one more of these "GET A LIFE DUMBASS" versus "FANDOM IS A LIFE DUMBASS" secrets I may just scream. It's been said several times already. I think the point has been made.

2. I hear you! I've been on both sides of that dynamic, and I never want to be anywhere near it again.
4. This is why I compromise and think of those as "graphic novels" -- because they might be very similar to manga, but they aren't. That's like calling sparkling wine that doesn't come from certain French grapes "champagne".
13. That was Grindelwald's first name?! Good gods.
14. they're actually kind of cute together. i have no idea who they are, but they're cute.
15. Aw, shit. I'm sorry to hear it.
18. Y'know, RP on Myspace might just be a good idea. Not as instantaneous as chat, not as hurry-up-and-wait as LJ. :-)
22. I'm sure Opa would drink some Jaegermeister in your honor if he were still alive. Since he's not, I'll sub in some Coke and drink for him. *toasts you*

Re: 18

I posted 18, just replying.

That's actually a fairly good way to sum up MySpace RP. You basically roleplay at your own pace, without anyone pressuring you to RP faster, since it's basically a message board type of thing. Some people roleplay slow (like me), and you have to wait, sure. But since the RPing fanbase there is SO big, it's really easy to find people who roleplay the same character as the slow people, but faster. If that's what you want, anyway!

(Wow, that was completely incoherent.)

Plus your profile has basically everything you need for any kind of roleplay, a place for information, pictures, etcetc.

I just enjoy it. :D /spam

I know how you feel - my cousins are both very much into fandom, and it sort of freaks me out. Plus, I have to put up with my younger cousin's horrible, terrible Mary Sue RP characters. I'm hoping it's just a phase...

(On the other hand, though, I have no problems with my best friend being in fandom - maybe because she wasn't too into it before we met. Or maybe because we practically share a brain.)

[identity profile] aviy.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
4. MYSTERIOUS. I wonder if the word manga has been updated into modern english-speaking society to indicate a comic book done in black and white with an emphasis on story and character relationships over the more popular colorized american comic books that tend to frequent episodic super hero stories often about morals and society! I mean! It's not as if languages ever STEAL WORDS from OTHER LANGUAGES. Why. In japan they sure as hell only use japanese words. of course.

9. Whenever I meet fanish guys irl they creep me out and I try to get away asap =\

15. o/

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
4. Right, because all American comics are exactly like that with no variety. Same with manga--they're all black-and-white and story based and it's not like things like newspaper comics are called manga over there!

...Wait.

Hay, it's a DtB secret. I think the fandom is large enough compared to some shows though. It's good enough that there's at least a post a day or so... it's nowhere near Geass, sure, but I think it's larger than you think (and I don't know how good it'd be if the fandom was uber-large)

And on LJ I severely miss seeing fannish guys because for the ones that creep people out,
1. there are girls who are as creepy if not even more so
2. there are also perfectly great guys who are fannish too.

Which is where forums come in.

[identity profile] jenken.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
4. I agree! I'm actually in art school right now because I want to create graphic novels. I have a manga-influenced style, BUT that does not mean I will draw manga. One of the reasons I love manga so much is that often it is very culture influenced and differs from a lot of American comics. I don't think that what I do could be considered manga as it doesn't have the cultural backing of Japan what with me being from the US and all. When I see "American manga" and such, I consider them graphic novels with styles influenced by manga. Really, I suppose it's not a big deal, but if I'm technical in what I consider anime, I might as well as been technical about this as well.
And it seems like you can always tell the difference between what is actually from Japan and what is not anyway, huh? The only one I can think of that I like is Rebirth by Christy Lijewski. I want to draw graphic novels with a manga-influenced style. Not manga. :D Thanks.

[identity profile] yummycoffee.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
9. Where are all the fannish guys? Pft, there's tons...but hard to find the good ones. ;P Also cosplay isn't a solitary thing. It'd be like going trick or treating on Halloween alone. In other words, yeah, BOR-ING.

P.S. Mmmboy, that November 11 is one sexy piece 'o fictional man meat. ♥ Darker Than Black will probably have more fans once it explains itself, lol.

13. Hahahaha, that's awesome. I find Hirako's style too straight though...I always pictured something fluffy like that blonde kid from Clamp's School Detectives. :3

(Anonymous) 2007-08-05 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
17. Ha ha, I adore Card Captor Sakura and started reading the series to see more of Syaoran and Sakura too. (And because of the Touya and Yukito cameos =3)

But no matter how interesting the series is... I can't get into it like I did CCS. I don't know why either... I guess I just like the CCS incarnations more than the TRC ones.

For short, word.

[identity profile] maiteoida.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know, I don't really agree with the whole throwing around of the word "manga" as of recent, just because I feel like it's done haphazardly but, and you're going to have to excuse me because I will admit that I am somewhat biased here, how DO you classify art that is inspired primarily by Japanese methods of storytelling then?

I realize that manga means "comic book", I do. But that doesn't erase the biases that come with certain terms, and I think that's what makes people more inclined to use the word "manga" to describe what may be manga-inspired work...that's why you end up having clumsy phrases like "OEL manga" because "comic book", to be honest, just isn't specific enough. It sounds stupid, sure, I'll give you that, but as soon as people stop assuming that comic books aren't just Superman and the like will be the day that we can truly stop using some of these titles. But that day isn't now.

Frankly, I like using the term graphic novels but if I want to tell people that my work is very similar to manga, well, the easiest way to do that is to use the word manga. But really, this is an issue where no one wins. You use "comic book" they think of Superman, you use "manga", they think you're a Japanese poser, you use "graphic novel" they think you're pretentious. I say fuck that, use whatever you like as long as you make your point clear.

Also, fuck this idea of a "national style". Go back in time and tell Osamu Tezuka to stop ripping of Disney before you tell me that. It's called having inspiration, guys. You can't help where it comes from, and if it's from another country, who cares? The fact is, no matter what you do, if you truly believe in your art your own personal self will shine through somehow...even if its foundation is in another country.

It's super great that the movie introduced so many new fans to the series (and reintroduced some old ones to the fandom! =D), but WTF.

I demand a link to any loyal!Starscream fics. I've only ever read one and it was intentionally bad.

a swastika is a symbol of peace, just hitler was an asstard and drew it backwards for it to have the opposite meaning. not to mention i don't see why a 'bad' symbol can't be a fashion accessory just like a 'good' one, like the red and black star people tattoo on themselves. the christian crucifix shouldn't be a fashion accessory either, but hey, it is!

i guess what i'm saying is you can't say people are glorifying genocide just through the use of a symbol, just like you can't glorify anything else you don't agree with through the use of a symbol either. maybe if people spent that energy on the people that were obviously going out and supporting those things and making an effort to push that agenda rather than the people who are fascinated with it and/or seem to like that manner of dress(because you know, some people do :O) then it probably wouldn't be a symbol of hate anymore

though i highly doubt people as a collective group would take that into any consideration long enough for it to garner a response more than "NO YOU'RE WRONG AND EVIL"
