Eh, "manga" has become recognized enough as a style of comic that I don't think it matters what country the people making it come from. All manga are comics, but not all comics are manga, and calling something done in the manga style a "comic book" will give people who don't know the particular work a much less accurate mental image of it than if you were to call it a manga. So why do it just because the creator isn't Japanese?

As for the term itself being Japanese, loan words have always been a part of language.

4. WORD. I've always thought that just because something is in a Japanese-inspired style doesn't make it any less of a comic book. Same goes for people who call anime-styled shows like Avatar anime.

21. ILU. Doctor Who elitism makes me sad. I watched the old series for years as a kid (this was only about... ten years ago though -- hooray for reruns!), but not everyone has access to the old shows. JUST LET THEM LOVE IT IN PEACE. D:

4. I agree. I draw manga-style comics, and hope to go pro one day, but I don't call my works manga. I have a tendency to call all comics, regardless of nationality, "comics" though instead of "comics" and "manga", even though I mostly read manga or "OEL manga".

5. Have you been to [livejournal.com profile] sadoichi? They have a lot of great Chad/Ichi fic and art. I ship both ChadIchi and IchiOri myself, and I agree that Chad doesn't get enough love. He's my favorite character. I've actually been not watching recent episodes because there is not enough Chad! xD

22. WORD. I'm Jewish, and whenever I see Nazi fanart, I feel really uncomfortable. I don't even like the term "grammar nazi" and others like that.

7. I would subscribe to your newsletter/read that fic.

10. STUPID SEXY FLANDERS!

11. Some of my favorite fanworks for a lot of fandoms have come from people outside or on the fringes of those fandoms. . .seems to preserve them against the more egregiously stupid pieces of fanon.

13. *spits up hairball* XD I love 'em both, but I gotta say. . .I don't see it at all.

10. T-that is always one of those things on the show that I tried very hard not to notice. D: Except that I totally did. I've had on slash-colored glasses since I was, like, four years old.

I know the feeling, though. I was very close to searching for Smithers/Mr. Burns fic a few months ago because I was curious. But then I didn't because I realized that I probably really didn't want to know.

14. Oh God, me too. O___O

20. I heart Margulis! :D My old roomate and I celebrate Margulis day every March! (Well, actually, it's "Make Fun of Margulis Day" officially, a week or two after "Albedo Day". But it's full title should be: "Make fun of Margulis by yelling 'UUUUZUUUUKIIII!' all day because we love him lots day").

[identity profile] gaignun.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)

4. I don't understand why calling it manga is a problem. I really, really don't. English already borrows so much of its vocabulary from other languages.

5. Chad IS hot! I like the relationship between him and Ichigo.

11. Eurgh, I hate it when older fans are elitist towards the new ones in a given fandom. It's so... petty.

15. Amen!

17. I know what you're talking about it. It drives me up a wall when I see people who have no idea where characters like Tomoyo or Souma come from. Agljaldkja, keyboard smash! CCS and RG Veda and MKR are all really good too.

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)

@4:

I can get what you mean in a sense. I mean, Korean comic books are exclusively called "manhwa". They aren't "manga" because they aren't Japanese, and frankly it's annoying when people get those terms mixed up or start calling any thing in the typical "manga style" manga.

So I can see what you mean in a sense. But I don't think there's such thing as "stealing" a style. Borrowing elements of a style isn't theft. And the thing with the newer, typically Tokyopoop comic books that are clearly inspired by manga-esque styles? They still retain a pretty distinct comic book style.

[identity profile] yami-chan.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
They still retain a pretty distinct comic book style.

Which is why it's so weird to hear them called 'manga'. It doesn't have anything to do with style borrowing. It's really all about semantics since as other people have brought up, both countries have borrowed heavily from each other. Why call them manga when you can easily called them digests, comic books or graphic novels? Actually graphic novels is exactly what they are. Lengthy original stories, similar to novels, that aren't published as monthly serials.

Also I feel the same about the manhwa. I always correct people at the store I work at, especially now that there's a good wave sized wave of them coming out here.

BNF stands for "big name fan". Basically the people who others flock to or scorn in mass... usually a combination of both. :3

There are only two remotely-eligible BNFs that I can think of, in BR fandom. As someone said on the previous page, the fandom is so small that the term "BNF" doesn't really apply to anyone.

Seriously, referring to yourself as a "BNF" is the equally-lame, infinitely-nerdier equivalent of calling yourself a "BAMF".

Kthnxbai.

17. The people who don't know CLAMP's other works are missing so much when they read Tsubasa. I was so ecstatic when I got the first volume and Sorata and Arashi were in it and were married! Seeing the familiar faces is the best part of the manga for me.

[personal profile] glazedmacguffin 2007-08-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)

This is such a double sided thing for me. It's stupid on both ends of the, "OMG Draw them 'cause they're awesome!" and the "OMG I DON'T WANT TO SEE NAZIS EVAR!"

The worst part is, people will keep wanking every time they see something Nazi related, eventually even if it's a negative depiction, just because it reminds them of it or say that it "glorifies" it, until people barely remember them. And god, whoever even remembers what the swastika meant in the first place (hint: look up "manji")

And then we do the same damn thing all over again.

BTW, Heinrich Himmler? Way more crazy and evil than Hitler. Hitler just yelled louder and bratted until he got his way.

5. Chad is THE hottest character in Bleach. When all the pretty-boy squad leaders and such come onscreen, it doesn't affect me a fourth as much as it does when I see Chad. So yes, Chad love! I turned into a pile of goo when I learned about Ichigo and Chad's history. <3

8. I feel the same way almost constantly occasionally. It all started with Link's Awakening when I was too young to understand how to play a Zelda game, and I've been hooked and in love ever since, and suffice it to say that Ocarina of Time BLEW MY MIND.

Re: 22

[identity profile] flimsy.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I read all the comments saying "but it means good luck too", and they make me so angry. Yes, it's a magical symbol, but it doesn't matter what it USED to mean or what it means in OTHER parts of the world.

For one, you're all forgetting that the swastika as a magical symbol does NOT look like the Nazi-Hakenkreuz, which is turned by 45 degrees.

Second, I don't think any American, unless they're refugees, will ever understand how this symbol makes us feel. Germany and Austria have a ban on it - we do not draw it or show it publicly, unless it's for scholarly purposes. I have never in all my life drawn a swastika or even thought about drawing one. I feel queasy and scared when I look at a swastika, or when I type the word Hakenkreuz. It symbolizes terror and genocide and death. Of course it's been over fifty years, of course most of us weren't even THERE when Hitler pushed for the Endlösung. But similar to fear of snakes, predators, big cats, a respect, a fear of this symbol remains.

Nobody's asking you to understand this - but the least you can do is RESPECT it.

[identity profile] drivebywizard.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I know perfectly well that the good luck-swastika and nazi-swastika are positioned differently. But the secret didn't specify, all they said was "the swastika is a symbol of hate." Also, it doesn't "also mean good luck." It ORIGINALLY meant good luck. Hitler took the symbol and twisted it into his own symbol. It's like someone taking a triangle, flipping it upside-down, and proclaiming it to be the symbol for their Genocide Club.

Also, it's pretty narrow of you to assume no "American" would understand. Since when did race matter at all when it came to compassion and understanding?

And also to kind of agree to an extent. But then again, TFs have come in so many series and forms and shit by now that people writing Starscream as a loyal follower is actually more believable to me than it is for him to be a nice character (ie, that fucking Armada crap about him being a wonderful self-sacrificing hero or whatever happened).

But mostly agreeing.

Though I can't agree with you on "stealing" other styles, because...seriously, people can draw however the hell they want, I don't care. But, like...something being manga isn't a badge of honor. There's really crap manga and there's really good comics and art style really has nothing to do with it--there's plenty of manga drawn in non-moe art style. So it's not manga?

Insisting on calling your comic "manga" when you're American or at least not Japanese just smacks of weeaboo to me.
