It is fucking twenty-twelve and women still need to make secrets like this

'Scuse me while I open my liquor cabinet and drink the contents

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HOMESTUCK

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the things about made-for-girls clothes is that it can make you very aware of your body, for better or for worse. Guy clothes is still far more functional/more about comfort.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-09-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And the pockets, man! Why won't the add pockets on girls clothes?!

I only buy men's jeans for that reason. I'm also convinced that the fabric used to make men's clothes is about a million times more quality stuff than the flimsy tissue-paper used to make women's clothes. argle flargle blargle

Of all the reasons for this to be a secret, I'm really not feeling "I should feel better in something a bit more feminine".

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Who gives a shit if you want to be feminine or not? The great thing about clothing is one day you can be feminine, the next day not. It's great!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
surely I should feel better in something a bit more feminine

Women should automatically feel comfortable in traditionally feminine things, and men in traditionally masculine things? That's weird. Tell me more!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. Wear whatever the hell you want. One of the perks of being female-bodied is that you can basically wear whatever the hell you want and no one really cares or judges you.

Flip the role around though, and a lot of people are ready to pass out judgements. I guess we got the good end of the stick on that one.

er no one expects you to feel better in more feminine clothes. It's different for everyone! Personally I feel waaay less comfortable in "feminine" clothes, so yeah. It doesn't matter. Wear the clothes. Be the b100b100d.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, everyone's really going 'troll' on this, huh? Guess I should explain?

First, I'm not a troll. And second, yes I am fairly new to fandom. The reason it feels weird for me to be comfortable in very unfeminine clothes is because I was never really told that it was okay to be unfeminine. Also, I did the whole attending-girls-only-Christian-school thing since I was five and am now eighteen. They kind of told me that premarital sex is evil and that girls should always wear dresses but that feminism is totally cool as long as you're only straight. The end result was one incredibly confused student. I am allowed to hang out with boys, but it is always expected that one day I marry a man and settle down with kids and be a stay at home mum.

And that's that. That's why it's a secret. Sorry if I confused anybody.

So no, not a troll. I just have not been told it's okay to act masculine.

I have no idea why, but this turns me on. God that image is so sexy.

Thread's over. Move along. Nothing to see here.

[personal profile] trollometer 2012-09-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like just legit ignorance and/or poor wording as opposed to straight up trolling. All you fabulous people up thread already did a great job of pointing out the problematic content. I hope OP learns something today about how poor wording can cause others to misconstrue your intended message.

The issue is likely not that you felt you were not feminine, it's that you probably felt you were cross-dressing. Or, that you found cosplaying a character more comfortable than "being yourself."

ETA: Damn it, OP.

Just wear what makes you happy. I buy a lot of men's clothing because of a lack (or really shitty) pockets. I got tired of going on a scavenger's hunt for pockets every time I needed new clothes. Even a lot of cargo shorts/pants have crappy pockets for women. It's like they don't get that not every woman wants to use a purse.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
where are you people finding all of these pocket-less pants? I want some too :(

Your gender doesn't dictate what you're going to find comfortable. It's your personal style and what you're exposed to (I'm sure there are a lot of guys who would find skirts very comfortable, but never try it because it's seen as socially unacceptable in many places, or because it hasn't occurred to them to give it a try). Some women like feminine things, some don't. Some people enjoying presenting a masculine or feminine appearance, and some don't care.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he dresses exactly how women dressed in the late '90s, so you could just do that and call it retro :0

But those clothes look so comfy :(

And it is! Dude's wardrobe is basically my mucking-about-the-house wardbrobe. Except for the boots and high socks, because only losers wear their boots and socks indoors.

I mostly wear t-shirts and jeans, and it's not even out of dislike for "girly" clothes or whatever. I'd LOVE to wear more cute clothing, except-

1. I have no interest in displaying my boobs to the world.
2. The fabric is cheaper and sometimes even see-through.
3. Girls' jeans are either A) a more expensive version of the exact same thing or B) prone to cut off circulation
4. Designers seem to think that an XL wouldn't actually want to look feminine anyway... unless they are 40 or - again - want to show their boobs.
5. There is a severe lack of girl's clothing with cartoon characters I like on the shirts.

TL;DR = You're not the only girl who wishes they could wear more girly things but isn't comfy in them. This is exactly why all my cosplays so far have been male.
