I understood their need to tie the Hulk transformation to something more physical but I agree.

I like the transformations being specifically triggered by anger. I mean, that's why he's a giant, green, rage monster. Not a giant, green, heart monitor.

Aw, thanks. <3

other physical reactions can be triggered by anger, such as tears or increased heart rate or any variety of things. the hulk transformation being triggered by anger could be perfectly logical.

(lol'd at giant green heart monitor)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But a billion other things could cause the heart rate, too. Fear. Drugs. Et cetera. It makes it not necessarily need "anger" which is the whole point of the Hulk.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, i think i phrased that badly! i meant that the hulk transformation wouldn't necessarily need to be caused by something physical (like the heart rate explanation the moviemakers gave) because if anger can trigger other physical reactions, it would make perfect sense that it could also trigger a hulk transformation.

i hope that's a bit more clear, i'm pretty tired rn and my thoughts are scattery.

Yeah, the only problem with linking it with a physical manifestation of anger is that those physical traits can be triggered by other things as well. Sex, for instance, was stated in the movie. If it was crying you better keep Bruce from watching Bambi.

So when I say anger I mean just the emotion.

Unless that's what you meant, in which case, ignore me! :D

(Ha, thank you.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i meant the emotion, but i think i phrased it in a really confusing manner (i'm tired lol).

i was saying that the hulk transformation being triggered by anger is actually very logical and physically possible, despite what the moviemakers seem to think. if anger can trigger other physical reactions, it could also logically trigger a hulk transformation.

i hope that's a bit more clear!

Ah, no, that's okay. :)

That makes a lot more sense. Thanks! Yeah, I have to agree. If the emotion of anger can trigger physical manifestations then why can't it trigger the physical transformation into the Hulk? Makes sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i guess because moviemakers like having ~concrete evidence~ to explain these things, but "HE IS ANGRY" has worked for years and years in the past.

(and, as the anon below pointed out, there are very few things about the physiology of the hulk that make sense. might as well throw logic out the window on this one.)

It seems cruel and unusual to have a canon reason to keep the hero celibate. Good thing he's not precluded from watching Bambi too.

Right? I mean, how could he ever deal with this scene?!

Those singing birds would get him every time!

Or something about Bambi's mom? Naaawww, gotta be the birds.

Ahahaha~

Yes! I kind of want to see that now. And you know that means he Hulks out just as the birds start singing about spring so the juxtaposition would be gold.

Yeah I see where they're coming from, too, but it was pretty unnecessary. I think most people can suspend their disbelief enough to not need a specific reason for why he turns into a rage monster.
It's a little like explaining the Force away with Midi-chlorians. We don't need a physical reason. The Force just part of the universe that you buy into when you watch Star Wars.

I feel like this trend in movies of trying to explain absolutely everything hurts the believability more than it helps it.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly. I also feel that it has a very specific reason. It's anger. The emotion of anger is pretty easy to identify and understand. It's a pretty simple explanation and I think most audiences will roll with it.

shefbskgj Midi-chlorians. Now every time I think about it I think of them being mentioned in "Star Wars That I Used To Know".

It really does. I don't understand the obsession.
cure_light: (Default)

[personal profile] cure_light 2012-09-14 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh totally. Anger is more than enough of a trigger. We can understand what that means without them having to put some arbitrary number on it. And the worst part is most of the time it doesn't even make sense in any real world context, so yeah, I have no idea what they're thinking.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they weren't thinking.

I always thought of it as a misconception of Bruce's in the film-- like it's a theory Bruce had that he was running with. Except the Hulk exists in his mind, and the "heart rate" theory was just psychosomatic.

At least that's the impression I got from the last shot of the film, where he has some grasp on it and smiles. Plus, it's supported by the whole "I'm always angry" free transform in Avengers. It also supports your fact that it's more about the physical triggers rather than just "heart rate."

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
You using that icon while talking about the Hulk confused me so much.

But [personal profile] b_dangerous is Batman. I'm pretty sure.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
See, I would accept that explanation if I got that from the movie. At all. But I didn't. I only thought about it when I was reading a bunch of fan theories. So I'm just going to go on record and say that's the movie's fault. I am taking no blame for not getting that. Because I can. Don't judge me.

The scene you mentioned in the Hulk movie could also mean he learned to control his heart rate. And the Avenger line could be retconning that. We're not really gonna know until the next movie.

[personal profile] b_dangerous 2012-09-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Very good point.

The movie was flawed in not really telling the audience anything or stating facts. Everything seemed so up in the air. But I guess that's what you get with jumbled rewrites. :(

Facts are for babies.

(Jumbled writers? Did not hear about that.)
