SECRET PRINCESS

OH MY GOD THIS IS A THING. There is a SHOW dedicated to PRINCES SEARCHING FOR A WIFE IN AMERICA. A REALITY TV SHOW.

I swear, sometimes I think the creators of reality tv are just drunkenly throwing darts at a board of ridiculous ideas anymore.

"PRINCES FINDING A WIFE IN AMERICA"
"TODDLERS AT BEAUTY PAGENTS"
"EVERYONE MAKES CUPCAKES AND IT'S REALLY INTENSE"

Do you have any ideas for a 'good' reality show, F!S?

Well, I once had an idea that there should be a Real World type show but instead of shoving random people into a house to live together it would be all of my siblings and I. We are individually all...quirky, so I think all of us under one house would be hilarious. Not to mention I think after about ten hours we'd start to want to kill each other.

I also want a travel show that's not sensationalized but like a Discovery type of show that's really basic travel adventures that you can do at home. You'd have like one host or experienced traveller and each episode you'd either take a new family on a new adventure that they have no experience with, or maybe one group of people per season learning new stuff about travel etc.

I've got a lot of travel oriented reality show ideas. No competitions, just taping for the experience. The Amazing Race would be must more amazing without the race, imho.

I wouldn't mind watching reality shows about... well, reality.

But, um, for something that follows the "Reality TV" formula, maybe something that as to do more about working together than being spiteful and such?

I feel I'm missing the point of reality shows. D:

Being spiteful is an mostly an American reality show standard. I watch Masterchef AU and the contestants are very respectful and helpful to each other despite the fact that they are competing. Most of the talking head segments are about how well they want someone to do or how they feel bad because someone didn't do well.

Some UK shows are less drama than their American counterparts. "Kitchen Nightmares," for example.

(I'm assuming you are watching American shows since we were talking about ASL the other day.)

I'm rather liking the current season of "Face Off" on SyFy channel, a competitive reality show about movie makeup. Since it's SyFy, there's a lot of monster/alien/horror themes, but not entirely. The only hugely antagonistic guy actually walked off the very first episode (and that episode was kind of painful to watch). But in the eps after that, the contestants have been supportive and admiring of each others' works and critical of their own way more often than anything else, and no crazy rivalries or braggadocio so far. Some tension when they're partnered up in challenges, but no "throwing under the bus" -- everyone save the guy who walked off has owned up to what they were responsible for.

Ugh, I hear you there. We used to really enjoy Orange County Choppers, because OMFG the work they did was amazing, and it was really cool seeing them take something from spit-balling designs through to a finished project, but we stopped partways through the first season because dude, why the fuck would I want to listen in on some family's private drama? I don't want to know that the dad is an asshole. I want to just enjoy the art and creativity and craftsmanship without feeling bad about how the son is treated.

Although I do have to admit that I do really enjoy Canada's Worst Handyman and Canada's Worst Driver, but there, (a) the drama of these guys coming together to learn their (much-needed) skills is an integral part of the show (where it really doesn't have anything to do with building a cool custom bike, IMO) and (b) the attitude of those shows is much more "Hey! Everybody's got difficulties but you guys can totally do this! We'll show you! :D" It's doesn't have that hurtful, "Hur hur these guys are morons lolll" nastiness that so turns me off other "Reality" shows.

I would watch the fuck out of this. I'd probably never do anything productive again, it would just be so hilarous.

Also, the older generations looking confusedly as teenage girls argue whether a guy should get with his brother or his best friend would entertain me for the rest of my life.

"EVERYONE MAKES CUPCAKES AND IT'S REALLY INTENSE"

ALSO: AT LEAST ONE PERSON/TEAM DRESSES LIKE THE CUPCAKES THEY MAKE.

I have a horrible weakness for the fix-a-failing-business type shows. So maybe instead of focusing on the hospitality/service industry they could make a show about a really niche industry, like IDK consignment or comic book shops or something.

There should be a reality show about me. :D It can be called "Who the Fuck Would Tune into this Shit?"

Seriously though, remember that secret about someone thinking "Shipping Wars" was about fandom shipping and then we all wanted a fandom reality show? Yeah, that'd be kind of cool. It can be more documentary style, like 'Taboo' or 'Hoarders.' Each ep can uncover a different aspect of fandom. Like, one on cosplaying, one on Internet video reviewers, one on authors who filed the serial numbers off (CC and EL James, for example), one on people with fandom related munchausen by Internet or have lots of drama sockpuppets, etc., etc.

Why isn't there a show about people who work at an amusement park? 'Parking Wars' style showing the day to day bullshit and puke.

I want the amusement park show :D And the fandom show!

I have a strong feeling no one would want to watch a show about my life right now either. Mostly I just go to class and do homework and go to academic clubs and lie around a lot.

Eh, it's probably not what you're talking about, but there was a short, Canadian series on some aspects of fandom as a general thing (cosplay, furries, etc.). Fanboy Confessional

i really really liked the larper episode orz

LOL. We already did this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undercover_Princes

I don't actually think that reality shows are necessarily all bad; I have a fondness for the nerdier shows like Turn Back Time and Serious Explorers. (But seeing as I am anon and up way past my bedtime I will also admit to loving tacky tantrum-fest Don't Tell the Bride.)

What do I want to see? Something showing fandom/fannishness in a positive light would be good.

I would love a college professor/grad student reality show. Of course, no one would agree to be on it because they'd be afraid of being denied tenure or kicked out of the program, but it would be a glorious thing. We have interesting lives!

I remember reading something about how gourmet whoopie pies were going to overtake cupcakes as the yuppie snack of choice, so I want a reality show about that, just so it could be called "Making Whoopie."

Also one of those Antiques Roadshow-type shows about books and/or comics, specifically. Because I like books and comics.

…but I watched three episodes of Kevin Jonas's reality show tonight, so no one should listen to me.

I TOO AM ODDLY FASCINATED BY THE KEVIN JONAS SHOW.

I find it utterly confusing because the Jonas brothers are clean as they come, they basically couldn't find a less scandalous family to sit around and film. When I caught them on tv they were watching home movies and laughing about how adorable Nick Jonas was. And I was like. . .what?

MAKING WHOOPIE YOU ARE AWESOME.

It would be called "The Veronicas" after the most annoying Saddle Club character, Veronica diAngelo. You see, every boarding stable of a sufficient size has at least one person just like Veronica who boards and/or rides there and drives everyone else crazy with his/her spoiled/whiny antics. So! What the show would do is take a variety of Veronicas from a variety of different stables and force them to live together and manage a stable together. They'd have to share grooming/washing areas, arenas, trails and even horses, some of whom would be extremely well-bred, professionally trained dream horses, some who are just ordinary horses and few fugly nags and even some mules (who are awesome, yes, but who are often looked over). The cast would also have to *gasp* do chores around the facility and generally keep the stable functioning properly. I assure you that it would provide endless entertainment.

I loved this article :D I would watch all of these, except #1 because I'm not interested in celebrities.

Still, I watched that show 'I Get That a Lot' the other day, the one where a celebrity works in a shop and people say they look like the celebrity. That is the most retarded thing I have ever heard of. Even worse than the princes and the cupcakes. Just ... who the fuck cares?
