Um, not much to say, but:

1. I loved the first series. Especially the fact that the characters are so rounded. I heard about the massive shipping wars over the show but honestly shipping really didn't matter to me all that much.*

2. I hated the setting of Korra, was iffy on the plot, but really liked the characters. Find myself most disappointed about the lack of detailed awesome kung fu animation. Did they switch animation studios?

*It's funny how even though I stopped feeling embarrassed about characters kissing on screen around when I hit puberty, for some reason anytime anyone kissed on the show I felt myself getting the same kind of second-hand embarrassment I used to have when watching Belle and Human!Beast kissing at the end of Beauty and the Beast. I don't know why. Maybe because I knew the show was targeted at kids mainly and I was watching it in that kind of mindset? I actually caught myself covering my eyes when there were kissing scenes and peeking through my fingers.

Finally, can anyone link me to their favorite fan artists? I'm not really interested in fic, but I'd love to see some art for either show.

Favorite and Least Favorite Works of Prose You Had to Read in High School

I actually never understood when people complained about the books (or plays or short stories) they had to read in high school. I actually thought most were pretty good. I'm curious to find people's favorites and least favorites.

For me:

Favorites: *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (my all-time favorite)
*Lord of the Flies
*To a Kill a Mockingbird (I have yet to meet anyone who disliked this book)
*Of Mice and Men
*Night

Least Favorites: *The Scarlet Letter (my all-time least favorite. I got nothing out of that book. I found it pretentious and difficult to read. I think it turned me off to Hawthorne forever).

*The Jungle (I hated this book too. I guess it succeeds as a socialist critique of the meatpacking industry in the early 1900s, but I found it boring as a novel. It was just Bad Things happen to two-dimensional characters without any real substance).

*Things Fall Apart (I also felt this a pain to read. It didn't help that the protagonist was unlikeable).

I want to know about other people? What did you like/dislike?

during some random browsing, i found out that someone wrote rpf about some band member's infant daughter being raped and killed. (don't even ask how i landed on that, i'm not sure myself.) it spread all over the fandom and the band found out, and it's hugely fucked up. i should be appalled and disgusted. intellectually i am. but emotionally i'm just kind of puzzled, and i feel horrible for it. i'm kind of hoping it's just shock beause i shouldn't be this unfeeling about something so awful.

it is awful that someone would write something about that (seriously, what kind of sicko...?), but it is just a fictional story not based on reality. maybe you should be a little more concerned if you hear about something like that (god forbid) actually happening and you are unfeeling about it.

Birds of paradise- the animals, not the flowers! And a very strange spider.

Coming from the Paradisaeidae family, these beautiful birds are mostly found around New Guinea, with some of them living on nearby islands and countries. They're very well known for their bright colours, gorgeous plumage and amazing mating displays, as well as the grat amount of variation that's found from one bird of paradise to the next.

This little beauty is Gasteracantha arcuata, or the spiny orb weaver, curved shiny spider or even the long horn spider- any of those names'll work! It's found around Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Singapore, and isn't actually that big, though the two long prongs on its back are certainly very attention drawing. Though they may look large in the picture, they're only about a centimeter or so long in length. If you're wondering why spiny spiders go out of their way to look so colourful, well, researchers suspect that it's done so in orer to lure their lunch of bugs and insects to them.
