Ahh, just admit it. We all find that exception sooner or later. Hell, you could even use it as a really good compliment! "Man, normally I hate this stuff... but yours is THAT GOOD!" I think they'd be amused and flattered more then anything. And if somebody else sees it, you already presented the context where this is your exception.

I never really got the insult of "pussy". It's supposed to mean weak or scared etc. but doesn't make sense. Because if it's like pussy cat - cat's aren't weak or scared or anything. And if it's pussy like ladyparts....that just makes no sense at all. It's just so random.

I've occasionally used pussy to mean scaredy as well, and I'm not proud of it, but yeah for the most part when people say that all it sounds like is a big sign of "hey everyone, I beat up feminine boys in the locker rooms at school, aren't I a winner"

It means "I'm trying to sound tough/cool but really I just hate women"

The association is that women are scared/less tough/weak. It's sexist as fuck. I agree that objectively it makes no sense, but the reason people use it is obvious, because of the connotation it's gotten.

Actually, you COULD make an argument in favor of the cat connotation - there is, after all, the good old phrase "scaredy cat"...

just tell them you like it! if they don't know about your dislike of fanfiction then it's not like they'll give you any grief over it or anything.

I always side-eye people who say they always have found "interesting" fic to be sub-par and lacking-- indicating that all the fic they read is bad. Either it's a knee-jerk reaction to prevelant thought that fic writing (and fandom) is a shameful hobby for losers, or you haven't read enough fic to really have a clue. Because there are some really good writers out there with fics that are more enjoyable and well-written than published works.

So, get over yourself and tell your acquaintance that her fic was great.

Fanfiction is not bad just by virtue of being fanfiction. I find a lot of trash on the local B&N and library bookshelves. Meanwhile, there are some amazing authors that let me keep enjoying my favorite shows and favorite types of stories.

I always get a kick out of people who admit fanfiction is not as horrible as they thought. ;D

Do you have trouble enjoying published fiction too? Movies and television?

Maybe I'm just in fandoms where the average quality of fic tends to be high, but I've never had trouble finding fics that I would consider well-written and that makes me wonder if maybe you're actually being overly critical. If you're dismissing everything as shit that isn't flawless, then yeah, pretty much all fanfic is going to look like shit to you, but so is pretty much every piece of fiction, assuming that you're applying the same standard to everything.

If there is such thing as good Deus Ex fic, please please link. It's not the kind of game that gets lots of fic that I can find, and I want some bad.

It's hard to find ANY. it has a kink meme on LJ that died about as fast as it began, and even then there were a few good drabbles and that's it.

You should tell them! It would be a really nice compliment! The only potential problem is if you're using "I don't read fic" as an excuse to not read bad-writing friends' crappy fic or something and they might see you read someone else's fic and start insisting you read theirs, too.
