You're aware that this is a Ryan Murphy show, right? It'll be all stereotypes all the time from here on out. If you want balanced characterization (and LGBT characters) watch The Wire, Deadwood, or Six Feet Under. (Yeah, I'm sad that I don't have a few newer recs, too.)

Grey's Anatomy has a lesbian couple with two femmes. Both being butch would probably be more groundbreaking, but at least there isn't the arbitrary masculine/feminine dynamic.

No, they wouldn't. For the longest, that was the cliche. The whole femme lesbian trope is barely over a decade old.

I just mean that having two femmes still kind of plays to the male gaze.

Um, show me some films/shows with butch/femme couples. No really. Really rare. Not because people didn't think they existed, but because BUTCH SCARY OMIGOD. Femme lesbians? Go look at some 50s pulp novels.

FUCK sometimes I think butch dykes are one of the last taboos for the mainstream.

Bomb Girls does really well with characterization. All of the main female characters are vastly different and well-developed. And one of them is gay.

Legend of the Seeker, The Good Wife + Lost Girl boast interesting bisexual characters and Lost Girl includes a lesbian relationship where both characters are pretty feminine.

Willow + Tara from Buffy. Both interesting, both femme.
