well, I have no problems with femenine-presenenting gay or straight men. Quite the opposite in fact. (Rawr.) And so: what is this show, is it worth watching?

I want to know what this is now too (I thought it was Girls at first, LOL)

It's The New Normal, Ryan Murphy's new sitcom on NBC.

As for if it's worth watching. It has a good cast, but it's Ryan Murphy so ... no, IMO. But YMMV. I don't like him.

I've only seen one episode, so I don't have too much of an opinion. But yeah, that whole dynamic is so common in shows with canon gay couples (one more "masculine" and one more "stereotypical queen") and it's really starting to bug. For the messages it sends AND for the lack of creativity.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate that message as well. That in any couple, even gay couples, one MUST be the man and one MUST be a woman, even if it is a man acting like a woman or a woman acting like a man in lesbian couples.

Why can't they just both be two masculine joes who happen to be gay? They exist in real life.

The only canon couple I know of that doesn't adhere to this stereotype is Jack and Ianto from Torchwood. Can anyone rec more?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like the show more if it weren't GLEE meets Modern Family.

And it's Ryan Murphy, what did you expect?

Your description of the show is exactly why I know I hate it without having to watch it. Although I also don't watch Glee, but I know I hate it via fandom osmosis...

You're aware that this is a Ryan Murphy show, right? It'll be all stereotypes all the time from here on out. If you want balanced characterization (and LGBT characters) watch The Wire, Deadwood, or Six Feet Under. (Yeah, I'm sad that I don't have a few newer recs, too.)

Grey's Anatomy has a lesbian couple with two femmes. Both being butch would probably be more groundbreaking, but at least there isn't the arbitrary masculine/feminine dynamic.

Bomb Girls does really well with characterization. All of the main female characters are vastly different and well-developed. And one of them is gay.

Legend of the Seeker, The Good Wife + Lost Girl boast interesting bisexual characters and Lost Girl includes a lesbian relationship where both characters are pretty feminine.

Willow + Tara from Buffy. Both interesting, both femme.

I watched the pilot and the second episode and wow, yeah. On top of the rather flat writing and contrived plot twists, the characters are pretty two-dimensional so far, especially the main cast. Then again, I shouldn't expect too much from the gentleman who gave us Glee (another show I couldn't stand). So much for breaking through LGBT stereotypes.

My mom loves it though, so I'll probably hear about it even if I stop watching it :|

it makes me uncomfortable how the only gays who get accepted are the heteronormative ones

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the show yet but I get kind of annoyed that now it seems any effeminate gay male presented in the media is automatically just your "stereotypical queen". Effeminate gay men do exist out in the real world and are much more than just a stereotype even if they do share some (or a lot) of the traits associated with those stereotypes. Again though I haven't seen the show so I can't really comment on this particular character but nuance and three-dimensional personalities isn't something I really expect from a Ryan Murphy backed sitcom.

I'd like this show a lot more if it wasn't written by Ryan Murphy and therefore doomed to be terrible.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's nothing but stereotypes. Murphy can't seem to write anything else. I mean, seriously. Have you seen Glee?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the trope annoying, but, at the same time, I've met men just like this in real life. Sometimes people buy into the stereotype and hold close to it, which they're allowed to do.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-16 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)

Wow sad that they pushed him into stereotypes like that. Andrew Rannels is a great actor (re: Book of Mormon!) so that's unfortunate that they made him so two dimensional. I got very excited to see his face here in the comm, but now I am sad :(

my problem with his character isn't that he's a stereotype but that he has to be paired up with a guy that watches football, plays basketball and doesn't have a high pitched voice to 'balance out the relationship' or make them seem more 'normal'.

[personal profile] gobbledigook 2012-09-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm more bothered at... his face... like, effeminate men are fine, but I can't care about gay characters if they're ugly. I know it sounds horrible, but for some reason it seems whoever casts gay characters for TV shows doesn't mind casting uglier people for gay relationships, meanwhile straight couples are always all sparkly and pretty. WE'RE THE SPARKLY ONES DAMNIT >_>

Why do socially justice-minded gays and straight allies think it's okay to gender police gay people and gay characters? There aren't so few gay characters any more that we need a wider representation, and you people are trying to take away representation from a large portion of the gay population.

I'm the opposite, I wouldn't watch this show at all if one wasn't a stereotypical queen. Since we cancel each other out, let's just leave the show as is.
