People are different OP. Some prefer to focus on one aspect that's important while others prefer to get as much as they can.

I'm also on the gender aspect instead of the race aspect. More woman with awesome plot arcs!

And I, most incorrectly, just want more hot guys.

both are important

The thing is, you can have different priorities while still recognizing others' priorities and not belittling or derailing or erasing them. So while the lack of racial diversity wasn't an issue for you, you still shouldn't shoot people down when it is an issue for them.

Now I'm trying to figure out whether I tend to care more about female or LGBT.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
To each their own. I personally go after shows with predominantly male cast members, but that's just me. No reason to feel weird or like you're "doing it wrong" simply because you have one preference over the other.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree completely.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
IA somewhat. I don't care what the characters are as long as they're not another white male character. Especially one who has bad relations with his father.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And I love the pretty (angsty) white boys.

I'd replace "daddy issues" with "traumatic past involving dead wife/child/parent".

The very fact that you even need to prioritise one above the other doesn't mean that you're doing it wrong, it means that the entertainment industry is still doing it wrong by having TV shows in the 21st century still constantly dominated by white straight cis men.

Eh, OP, I think the only way you'd really be Doing It Wrong, in this context, is if you bashed others for having different priorities which you didn't do.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, this secret also shows that you only here the big uproarious call outs for lack of racial diversity on shows that are primarily female-centric, Girls comes to mind in addition to Bbunheads...

Not that I'm against calling that shit out (and God knows the hipster racism of the Girls creators is terrible), I just wish it was a bit more equal opportunity and we had celebs, producers, etc pointing out Two and a Half Men and the like for their lack of diversity, and using it less as a way to criticize and tear down women on TV.

I.just.don't.care.

I know this is a huge deal to some people, but I'd rather watch something with an all-male cast than a show with female characters who annoy me. I.e. I'll have The Expendables over Sex and The City any day.

And while I prefer racially diverse casts, it's not going to stop me from watching if there aren't. I care about interesting storylines and interesting characters. The rest is secondary to me.

Eh, everyone's got different priorities. For me it's multidimensional female characters first, lack of extreme race!fail second, LGBT visibility third, and actual racial diversity fourth. But I'd never say someone who put racial diversity first was wrong.

I'd say from some (mythical) Objective Viewpoint, they're equal in importance. But the thing is, no one is living in Objective Viewpointland. We all have our own priorities. I don't think there is anything wrong with yours at all.

You're still asking for diversity though, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's ridiculous if anyone is implying or telling you what you should prefer to look for as a poc (regardless of gender). It doesn't have be one or the other, or a negative if you favour one.

That said, story comes first, but same. I won't avoid something because the cast isn't diverse enough, but it's like bonus points in its favour for me to check it out if it is. If there's queer characters, specifically queer women tbh, even better.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not 100% relevant to your secret, but on the Shonda Rimes/ASP thing, I've got to go with Shonda: Bunheads and Grey's Anatomy are about equally mediocre, but Shonda's come up with three shows that feature female characters at the forefront, who have careers and lives and conversations about things other than men. And some of them are white, and some of them aren't (and some of them are even not straight!), and all of them have their strengths, as well as their weakness. So. Fast-talking and pop-culture references aside, yeah, I see more of myself in Shonda Rimes world than I do in ASP's.

You are allowed to have priorities and preferences and areas that you just don't give a fig about. It's your viewing pleasure. You are the ultimate judge of what makes you happy -- not the ranty blogs you read.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're not doing it wrong.

Personally, I look forward to the day when we won't have to "prioritize" - when there will be a vast range of good-quality shows with diverse characters.
Sadly, I don't think that day will come in my lifetime.

[personal profile] la_petite_singe 2012-09-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's necessarily wrong. I mean, it'd be nice if this wasn't even a question anymore, but women are more the half of the population; it's really ridiculous and unreasonable to not even have a show pass the Bechdel test or whatever. (And I have such mixed feelings about the Bunheads thing--Shonda's kind of the only one getting it right with the color-blind casting thing, but I didn't like the way she said she couldn't "feel good" about her kid watching the show because they were all white. Like, she can't get anything out of it now?)

I don't think there's anything wrong with personally prioritizing some things over others like this. Emotionally, some things are just more important to you, sometimes.
