Patricia C. Wrede is considered "adult" fantasy? O_o

Well, seconding her!

Also adding Tamora Pierce because everyone should read Tamora pierce. I've been re-reading all her books recently, and falling in love again~

Hm, you're right. Oh well! Still a solid author to rec!

And forever. (Just finished ITROTG and starting at the beginning with Alanna next - Daine is my favorite, and I can *never* discipline myself into reading the quartets in the proper order.)

I decided to read them in order- for once, lol. I'm on Emperor Mage now, but it was soooo tempting to skip and go to Kel (she's become my favorite recently, though she was not my favorite when I was younger. It's funny how tastes change!)

Yes!

Which one is ITROTG?

Re: ayrt

In The Realms Of The Gods, fourth book in the Immortals Quartet (aka the Daine books). Immortals is the second quartet in the larger...series, I guess you'd call it, of books set in Tortall.

Oh, I remembered it as (The) Realm of the Gods. I have an omnibus version of the Immortals Quartet so I don't even remember what each book is called XD

Hm, I've read a lot of those but always considered them YA. I'll look into the ones I haven't heard of though, thank you!!

I know that at least Anne McCaffrey and Terry Pratchett wrote novels for YA category, that belonged more or less to the world of their "adult" novels.

Apparently, the difference between YA and adult novels is that the protagonist has to be a kid or a teenager, and that there's no explicit sex. But some authors don't throw in sex in their novels even when they write adult novels, so...

No one should ever read Piers Anthony unless there is some kind of extenuating circumstance. Like, a gun to their head. There is so much creepy shit about women and sexuality in there, it is mind boggling. But a lot of the others are great! (I've never heard of Kristen Britain, but this seems like a good time to look her up!)

I admit I haven't read them in years but I read the Incarnations of Immortality series when I was in high school and really liked them. I'm guessing I should never re-read them if I want to keep my fond memories?

YES. NEVER REREAD THEM. That was the only series of his I read all the way through (I was in middle school), and I bought all of them because I thought they were so great. When I was cleaning out my bookshelves a few years ago, I started to reread and was overwhelmed by a sudden desire to take a shower. Not good. :(

Good to know!

There are so many books that I read when I first started really reading (I was a late bloomer for reading, started in high school) that I have such happy memories of, but when I go back and re-read I'm like what is this shit? How could I not see all this horrible creepy bad writing etc going on?

So sadly true. And there are definitely things I have intentionally not reread because I'm scared of what I'll think of them now. Especially after how bad my Piers Anthony experience was.

This is why I haven't gone back to re-read Piers Anthony. I loved them as a teen; Incarnations made me think a lot about religion and my spirituality, and the Mode books helped me a lot when I was suicidal. However, I remember that Anthony has some major issues with women and rape, and I'm pretty sure that would be triggering to me at this point.

Thirding the "shit yes, Kristen Britain". Best new author in ages.

Also N.K. Jemisin.
