My favorite YA series is the Kobie series by Candice F Ransom. It's not fantasy, but it's about a really believable girl protagonist who doesn't fall in love until about the last book, and it's with the dweeby nerd guy who spends his days in class doodling airplanes in his notebooks. Prior to that, she spends her time trying to learn how to cook in home ec (failing hilariously) and redecorating her room. They're genuinely funny and sweet, and Kobie is believably and lovably awkward. Which is why I liked her so much, and still do.

They're unfortunately out of print, but you can find them on Amazon.

Oh! And I forgot--I really like the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger, too. It's a steampunk series featuring vampires, ghosts, and werewolves. There's a romance in there, but the main focus is on the fact that the main character lacks a soul and is also a Victorian lady secret agent solving mysteries with her vampire and werewolf buddies. (There are also queer characters in the story, including Alexia's vampire BFF Lord Akeldama, her werewolf husband's second-in-command [well, he's implied to be bisexual, I think], and a lady zeppelin mechanic starting from the second book.)

Someone else read the Kobie books! They're some of my favorite YA books- Kobie was far more relatable for me (also an awkward and faily girl with strict, penny-pinching parents) than most YA protagonists, and I liked her sense of humor. I'll take her over the Beautiful All Along Special Snowflake protagonists of most of the current YA novels. Don't get me wrong, wish fulfillment stories can be fun, but it seems like that's all it is these days.

That's the same reason I loved Kobie! She was rad as hell.

(I named a character in my own YA project after her.)
