Wikipedia, reading recced fics, reading recced essays, having friends describe the characters personalities and actions to me, checking and rechecking with them to see if I was staying IC, and eventually getting a good grasp of them.

Re: 22.

how can you be a fan in a fandom and never have seen or read the canon?

wikipedia is not a reliable source. recced fics and essays are biased with a slant from the individual and is scary considering how much horrible fanon I've seen perpetuated in fandoms such as Gundam Wing by writers who couldn't be buggered to watch the show.

honestly the best way to get a grasp of the characters is to watch it yourself and not get caught in the fanon trap that so often accompanies getting your information third hand. I sure hope you aren't in my fandoms. not watching or reading the canon material and getting your characterizations from fanfiction is unbelieveably and grossly irresponsible.

please don't pull the 'but everyone loves my interpretation' because I've seen fanon versions of characters beloved in fandoms which bore no resemblance to the show at all.

you fail. hugely.

Re: 22.

(Anonymous) 2007-08-06 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say beloved, I said solid. Which means that the people that have read the fics said that the characters were IC, and yep, I asked for random, anonymous people over the internet to crit me as hard as they could and point out all my characterization errors so I could learn better. I also did, at the beginning, years ago, put up disclaimers saying I had never read the material. After that, I stopped posting those disclaimers and no one complained a bit. ;)

After a response like that, I hope I am in your fandoms, just to annoy you!

Some of the worst fanfic writers in fandom have tons of good reviews. Just because no one has complained doesn't mean your work is good. Either read the canon material or write for canons you actually do know.

[identity profile] goodguesser.livejournal.com 2007-08-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you got me there. I've never read any of his/her fics so don't know for sure if the writing is bad or not. I just kinda think it's pointless writing for canon you have never read.

That's because you're awesome and made of win ... and well, not retarded. And we know how much of fandom I find to be retarded. XD

Re: 22.

(Anonymous) 2007-08-07 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never watched/read a single episode/chapter of the damn thing because I never had any interest in anything in it BUT Gin.

I will continue to think you're an idiot for writing for a character in which you've never watched the show but you profess to have any interest in. You've not seen the character in action, you only base your characterizations on what other people tell you, which is really big fail. How can you know your interest is about the character and not other people's interpretations of the character?

At least I know which fics to avoid now in Bleach.

Of course people's opinions don't matter to you. That's why you freeze threads like a coward, right?

Lol. Just lol.

For the record, trying to shame me because I won't read your stuff now is incredibly lame as well and won't work. If I am missing omg the best thing since the dawn of time in your fiction because I think you're lazy and idiotic because you won't watch/read the canon, well, doesn't sound like much of a loss to me.

I appreciate when a writer will take the time to know all aspects of the characters and canon they write for and that includes having a working interpretation that is their own and not spoon-fed by their friends, wikipedia and other fanfiction.

btb, will my comments get deleted, too, since I think you're as lame and made of fail as you think I am? I saw how you deleted comments before a few weeks back and I'm just curious.

Hey there, MAJOR Bleach fan here. I've seen every episode, I read the manga, and I watch every episode featuring Gin at least twice, even if it's just the little thing at the end where he explains something. Just wanna say you're a total fucking idiot. I've read his Gin and it's probably one of the best out there. Hell, I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best outside of the manga or anime. So honestly, you're missing out. But I'm not here to lecture you on that...

You're really a moron if you think he's going to delete stuff just because you insulted him. He's a bigger person than that. Though, really, if I was a mod I'd turn on ISP logging just to ban your ass from the comm. But hey, not in charge here. When/if the mods here delete something it's for a real reason. Maybe the person was making a really harsh personal attack (which they usually leave up anyway and just lock) or breaking a rule, or like, if someone had posted a spoiler to HP back during the 'do not post spoilers' window, they would have deleted that.

So think what you want to think, not like anything but actually accidentally reading the stuff and realizing it is good stuff is going to change your mind. Though I think even then you'd hold your opinion out of spite. Just please don't start thinking that the mods here are the kind of low people that would delete comments of people just because they don't like them. They like hearing other people's opinions, even on themselves, no matter how rude or stupid. Must be a real laugh for them.

My tl;dr point, secret maker probably makes amazing stories, wish I knew what it was so I could read; mod boy is one of the best Gins you'll see, even without bothering himself with the manga/anime; and get over yourself about deleted comments.

Trying to shame someone into not writing for a fandom is a dozen times more lame, especially when you haven't read their work.

Calling someone lazy and idiot because they don't want to participate in a fandom the way YOU want them to? Equally lame.

I think you fail hugely for reasons completely unrelated to your fanfiction. Every time I see you, you're saying stupid things and being a douche.

Link us to your fics, please? Seriously, I'm curious to see if writing something without watching the original series is actually possible. If your fics are really good, you won't have anything to worry about, and you'll actually get free pimpage out of it.

(It's also a win-win situation for me, admittedly. If your fics are good, I get something cool to read and pimp to friends, and if they suck, I get something to giggle at and mock with friends.)
