I'm really getting sick of Avengerkink because of all the "Loki is a mommy and gives birth so therefore you should feel sorry for him and be nice to him even though he's been derailed into a misogynistic stereotype that bears absolutely zero resemblance to the real Loki" prompts. Also all the viciously OOC prompts where the idea that Odin wants to kill Loki's babies is stated like it's canonical, taken-for-granted fact. And the super-duper-bamf-ninja-perfect-fatherly-dom!Coulson. And totally broken!non-functional!barely-sane!Clint.

Also, the fact that apparently everyone on that kinkmeme has their hand in their panties while chanting for Tony to get raped like ancient Romans watching a gladiator match has officially started to creep me out. Can't go a single page without seeing it. I know it's not meant to be an insult, and in fact fans tend to whump their favorite characters, but everyone's blatant salivating over the prospect of seeing him get degraded and humiliated is pretty squicky for me.

...what.

I mean...WHAT.

I'm so glad I've never gone there, because that seems like a place of complete insanity.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Eh, I'd say it's insanity can be pretty deep and intense at times, but not nearly as prolific as the anon makes it out to be. And there's a lot of gen prompts, and a lot of cute, non-specific prompts, and some prompts are really, really thoughtful with really fascinating ideas, often as epic deconstructions of the stupid eyeroll-worthy tropes the anon mentioned.

The "lets make sure to rape Tony at least once a page" mentality is...sadly accurate though.

Still wtf-ing over Coulson. I walked out of the movie not even remembering his name. Checked out AO3 and was like, who the fuck is Coulson?

Did you watch the Iron Man movies and Thor? (He also had two shorts.) So people got attached to him over a long period.
oroburos69: (Default)

[personal profile] oroburos69 2012-09-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, yes. He just didn't make any kind of impression on me.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-09-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, that's interesting. He really popped out at me in the first Iron Man movie.

What do you think they could have done to make you care about the character more?

I had pretty much the same reaction as oro - he just wasn't that much of a personality. Yes, he was there - and he was...just kind of never had that much personality. He was either 'BAD GUY STEALING RESEARCH - THAT TURNS OUT TO BE NICE/GOOD' or 'THE GUY KEEPING AN EYE ON TONY [for a short amount of time]'. In neither role was he really that interesting to me, and it wasn't until they showed something that was entirely unrelated to his job [fanboying the Cap'n] did I get even remotely interested in him - and well. The Avengers wasn't exactly the best place to find out more about most of the main characters, much less a side character.

[I haven't seen the shorts, so they have no impact on how I feel about him, really.]
intrigueing: (coulson)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think peoples' attitudes towards him depends a lot on whether you saw the solo movies first and/or recently.

I saw them first. Still didn't know who he was.

That...is a really accurate summary of Avengerkink. I think it's because fandom has slowed down a tad; only the really bizarre, really obsessed fans remain.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhhhh, you know there are many more movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the way, right?

It's not a flash in the pan like Inception.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh fandom. That "Tony is rapebait" thing (which is totally not restricted to the kinkmeme whatsoever, btw). My experience of it kind of went like this:

man, I love sappy h/c fics about my favorite characters, it's like my biggest fandom guilty pleasure

man, the Avengers is such a great fandom for h/c. Everyone has so many problems and has so much bad shit happen to them

man, I love Tony. He's like, either my favorite or second favorite character. And he makes me d'awwww all over the place the more I think about him. I'm gonna look up some h/c about him before I start saying the word "feels" like some tumblr fan

hey, here's some noncon. Well, noncon h/c is just as much a guilty pleasure as any other h/c, so if it's well written maybe it'll push my h/c buttons and be hot in the bargain

poor baby! but that was totally hot and I can't feel bad about it

oh here's another

hey here's like...twelve more

I'm kinda glad about this ngl. So much variety. Poor baby.

here's another fifteen

he's asking for it, rdj shouldn't have eyes like that

ewww did I just actually say that

I wonder if this happens to other characters this often

no it doesn't. That's....huh

okay, here's the kinkmeme...wow, that's...a lot of prompts for...

here's the completed fills...huh...a...LOT of people filled those prompts about...

did...did everyone in this fandom just spend the whole film leering at Tony and picturing how hot it would be to see him get raped or something...*sideeyes everyone*

*gigglesnort* okay just how many....

lmao I love it when fandom creates blatant tropes I can point at and giggle over and pretentiously analyze. I love fandom and its glorious ridiculously unapologetic idfic too. Don't ever change. <3

TL;DR (which I totally stole from ooh_mrdarcy): http://i.imgur.com/xmQK4.png

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
1. Loki is canonically the MOTHER of at least one monster.

2. Odin will be killed by one of Loki's children during the apocalypse.

So, yeah, you don't know your Norse mythology.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. Norse mythology.

Because clearly, in Norse mythology, Loki tried to take over the world by letting aliens into New York City and then got his ass beaten into the ground by a gamma-radiated scientist. Also, in Norse mythology, Thor totally went to New Mexico this one time and ate lots of poptarts before he got caught by secret agents, and then later got in a brawl with a human in high tech armor and then spent some time chilling on a flying aircraft carrier. That totally happened in Norse mythology.

Saying Marvel's Asgard is remotely like Norse mythology is like saying Disney's Hercules is anything like Greek mythology. Except even worse.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Please. We're discussing actual movie canon, not the fact that it was loosely based on mythology. And Loki was not exactly a poor lil woobie in Norse mythology.

You think you're SO SMART for knowing some myth, people like you love to wave it around as a "people are so ignorant!" But really? There's a lot of us with a pretty good grasp on it who think you're full of shit.

tl;dr movie characterisations =/= myth characterisations. also, LOLLLL.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I mean, quite a few Loki fics mix canon with mythology. This isn't new, so knowing a little mythology would clear up the confusion pretty damn quickly.

"Full of shit?"
Why, because I pointed out that it makes sense from a mythology point of view, which a lot of people don't care about mixing with movie canon, little that it is.

It's really fucking sad that people wouldn't at least try to find out the inspiration for a character.
terabient: baby Thor and Beta Ray Bill, adorably sad (Marvel: bb!Thor sad)

[personal profile] terabient 2012-09-22 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just sad that no one ever fills Thor-centric prompts there. :(

you sound new tbh

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Come on anon, there will NEVER be enough degradation, humiliation and rape of my favourite characters.

Gimme moooore.

Unf I'm eagerly waiting for the one ooc prompt in 12 to be filled where Tony is taken advantage of in the van by the Avengers because dubcon group orgies hits the right places.

Also, the fact that apparently everyone on that kinkmeme has their hand in their panties while chanting for Tony to get raped like ancient Romans watching a gladiator match has officially started to creep me out.

Oh honey. :D I'm sure you're pretty new to fandom if you still have such scruples. I kinda feel sorry for you given what you're going to keep seeing.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, the fact that apparently everyone on that kinkmeme has their hand in their panties while chanting for Tony to get raped like ancient Romans watching a gladiator match has officially started to creep me out.

Ah ha! Ah hahahahahahahaa! *wipes tears* Oh god I shouldn't be laughing, but I'm sorry, um, no, the correct answer is MOAR Tony rape, all kinds, all perpetrators, all the time, and as degradingly as possible. Here's to hoping it never dies out.

(I do wonder WHY he's such prime rapebait though. I mean, I totally agree that he is one of the best rapebait characters I've ever had the fortune of seeing, but I'm wondering exactly what it is that makes me want to see him get violated so much more than the other characters.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've been told, it's because RDJ has those huge puppy eyes (I don't really know how it's related) and that Tony is the most vulnerable without the suit. Also, people like torturing their favorite characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Loki is a mommy and gives birth so therefore you should feel sorry for him and be nice to him even though he's been derailed into a misogynistic stereotype that bears absolutely zero resemblance to the real Loki" prompts

Mannnn don't get me started. I mean if you want to fap about Loki being a mother knock yourself out, but the idea that motherhood conveys some kind of Instant Morality Pass on a character is so fucking stupid.
