As a mod at a kink meme, I feel that way at times. But ultimately, I don't care. If you want that OOC, physically impossible smut piece, go ahead and request it--I won't stop you.

*shrug* Everything is open to interpretation, and it gets taken full advantage of in kink memes. Guess you're just going to have to learn to say, "to each their own" and move on.

This is how I feel too. I try not to let it bother me, because I've been in fandom long enough to notice that all book/movie/show fandoms follow a rinse-repeat pattern for bad characterization. There's a woobie, a super-top, a ~bitch~, a ~slut~, that entire a/b/o thing, good-guys-who-are-really-bad-guys, etc. It's all pretty standard, so I just filter it out these days.

I think a lot of it is because--required 18 or older page aside--so many people on kinkmemes are on the younger side of things.

I know how you feel, but really, a kinkmeme is for getting off on an idea and/or situation, not for producing well-written, appropriate tributes to complex, distinctive characters. Not that kinkmemes haven't produced some really, really great fics, but that's not really their purpose.

All I see here is:

"Baaaawww, people's personal sexual fantasies don't match up with my personal interpretation of characters!"

Like, even if I think something is OOC I give it a slide on the kmeme because of how a kmeme operates. I look at it as a place for porn and 'what if's. People stretch stuff there because they can; it kind of what that place is for. You want something less OOC I would probably look at rec lists or something.

Well, yeah. It's a kink meme. Any kink meme will have off the wall prompts, but the awesomeness lies in pulling it off imo.

Maybe it'll be better if you look at each one with a prefaced, "Hey there, writer/artist. I bet you don't have the skill to make this work." ♥

I'm really getting sick of Avengerkink because of all the "Loki is a mommy and gives birth so therefore you should feel sorry for him and be nice to him even though he's been derailed into a misogynistic stereotype that bears absolutely zero resemblance to the real Loki" prompts. Also all the viciously OOC prompts where the idea that Odin wants to kill Loki's babies is stated like it's canonical, taken-for-granted fact. And the super-duper-bamf-ninja-perfect-fatherly-dom!Coulson. And totally broken!non-functional!barely-sane!Clint.

Also, the fact that apparently everyone on that kinkmeme has their hand in their panties while chanting for Tony to get raped like ancient Romans watching a gladiator match has officially started to creep me out. Can't go a single page without seeing it. I know it's not meant to be an insult, and in fact fans tend to whump their favorite characters, but everyone's blatant salivating over the prospect of seeing him get degraded and humiliated is pretty squicky for me.

Maybe it's the challenge of seeing if someone can fill it while making it still seem true to the character. I've seen some prompts that seemed that way, or asked for that specifically.

Or maybe they really see the characters that way. That happens a lot in fandom. You should learn to find humor in it since it'll never really go away.

That you refer to watching a show and not playing a game makes me relieved that you're not talking about me, since I do often post kink meme requests for aggressive characters being made the submissive half of a pairing.

In my case, I guess I could say it's a fixation on the idea of being so completely out of one's element and the loss of control.

eta: i mean whatever, if people want to write ooc stuff that's totally cool (i do it too sometimes, just for fun), but it still makes me laugh.

Kinkmemes are not the same as regular fanfic though. They are purely fantasies that people find hot, not supposed to be fics that are true to the source or have good characterization.

I mean, there was a prompter on avengerkink a couple days ago specifically saying that blatantly amoral OOC behavior was her (his?) kink, and asking for all the Avengers to take advantage of Tony while he was drunk. I'm assuming they knew full well that was OOC, but that's not really the point of a kinkmeme. A kinkmeme is where you can express all your darkest and most twisted thoughts without judgement or responsibility.

One fan's pleasure is another fan's blech. Especially when it comes to kink.

I'd much rather have a kink meme full of ridiculous prompts where I might be able to find a fic that appeals to me, then having one that applies some arbitrary standard of ICness and has people constantly guessing whether they aught to prompt of fill.

Pretty much anywhere you go for your fics, you're going to be sorting a lot if you're looking for your idea of perfectly IC.

But I do feel you. In one of my fandoms, it always seems like people hive mind and try to one up one another's kinks when you read the prompts all in a line. I also wish that some fandoms were more than their kinkmeme. But that just sucks for me.

This is me in every kink meme I've ever visited EXCEPT the Phoenix Wright one. That one may have its issues, but the canon is on so much crack that I find it hard to NOT be able to imagine the characters up to just about anything. XD

Isn't that kind of the point? They're not going to do that on the show/in the book/on the webshow/in the movie, so a fan prompts "Character A/Character B, handcuffs" or whatever?

Sometimes I wonder why they want character X being so OOC it looks like character Y.

Why don´t use character Y if what they want are certain traits character Y has.

Maybe because they want the looks of character X and the personality of character Y. It ends up being a bizarre combination. 0_o

I especially loathe when they turn a nice, kind, good character into a "bad boy", it´s so ridiculous and OOC.

God I hear you. I remember this one time someone requested an obscure canon character with almost no personality... with a kink that totally contradicted the very little we knew of the character.
I took it as a challenge and worked hard to articulate the kink and justify the OOC moment. The OP never commented on it but instead made a post on their journal screeching it wasn't what they wanted, that it was worse than no answer at all and that the stupid anon should never ever write again.
