I've never read it but I have to say, isn't it amazing how different people have different tastes? I know, it blows my mind every day. Go read a different fic, OP, and ignore this one if you don't like it.

I haven't read this one yet. I like trying out the fandom "masterpieces" just to how my tastes and the fandom's line up. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. That's just the way it goes. Just rec the stories you think are worth attention. That's what I (try to) do. (I'm behind on my reccing, though.)

I could say the same about almost every hugely popular fic in every single fandom I'm in. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

oh yeah, I tried to read that once. I think I made it pretty far before I just sort of gave up because nothing really seemed to be happening. It was just sort of... prose. lengthy, confusing prose everywhere. Oh yeah, and the word crux kept popping up all the time. I saw it at least five times. Who needs to use the word crux five times?
Basically it was really confusing and wordy. So, yeah. You're not alone there

I was disappointed since I don't dig the incest vibe for Loki/Thor and was looking for something where they weren't raised as brothers. Any recs, F!S?

I gave it a go because it was recced everywhere as 'amazing' and I barely made it through the first chapter, skimmed two more and then gave up. It's far too purple prosey for my liking which makes it come off as pretentious, also the phrase 'jealous green' was used what felt like five times every paragraph and it set my teeth on edge.

never heard of this one, if someone were to ask me what I thought would be the biggest best fic of the fandom, I'd have said Chaos War. I stayed up all fucking night reading it one night. Soooo good.

I'm not in the Avengers/Thor fandom, but that's the way I feel about a lot of the so-called "best" fics in the fandom. There was a certain fic in a certain fandom that was so popular that people referred to it the "[fandom] Bible". Other fics in the fandom were expected to line up with the "Bible". They were expected to have the same headcanon, the same ships, even the same side-ships. The ones who didn't got bashed. One day I tried to read it and gave up about 1/3 of the way through. Honestly, I think the real reason it was so popular and recommended because it was co-written by two of the fandom's BNFs.

I think that "most of the fandom believes this is the greatest literary masterpiece" is a broad exaggeration. I collect rec lists, from whichever fan who chooses to create one (read: not necessarily BNFs or those around them), and not even once did this fic appear.

But I must say why I find this fic memorable, which is the reason why I came to be aware of its existence: it has vasts amounts of fan-art. Seriously, I have not found other fic, in any of my fandoms (maybe this has also happened in other fandom, but I'm not aware of those), where the fanon interpretation of a character has been taken and run away with by so many fan-artists. Seriously: Jotunn!Loki with emeralds in his hair? --> Eidolon. It's kind of memorable.

That being said, once you leave the distracting/confusing/overwhelming vastness that is Tumblr? You'll probably not hear it mentioned (unless you go looking for it).

IA. I love Thor/Loki and I love AUs that focus on world building and mythology, but I just couldn't get through this one.

Then again as someone already said, different people like different things so whatever. Let people like what they want.

And I always thought the astolat fics were the 'MUST READS' of the Thor fandom. Oh, well.

Lol, I'm suprised it's known enough to make all these commenters want to show what special snowflakes they are. Most people I know in fandom haven't even read the thing. I have, and happen to be a fan (I like Old Norse and epics and all the things it's quite clear it is from two seconds looking at it), but I don't think my personal taste is that interesting to others.
