On a similar note, besides the fact that I don't get Sterek. I want to know why do so many fans and mostly fangirls, some but not all, always ignore the gay characters and go for the obvious straight character for their slash ships?

Like Danny, as you have said, OP, is out and proud but he is almost never shipped with any of the other male cast members. But Stiles who is head over heels in love with a Lydia is always shipped with Derek. Why? Why go for the straight characters? Is it a challenge thing?

I don't know. I find it odd.

OP, I don't disagree with the fact that fandom ignoring Danny and his potential for a serious relationship with one of the main characters is a bit iffy, but I have to say, to have Danny, Stiles, and Derek all be canonically at least bisexual would be a pretty big deal (a bigger deal than just Danny/Stiles, just numbers wise). Plus the fact that Danny's not a main character (would it be more progressive if he was/had been from the start, sure, but it didn't go that way). Derek and Stiles have been major players in the show since it began, and are tied to the action in a way Danny isn't, so for them to be bi would (I think) be pretty progressive.

And I mean honestly, I like Danny, but we've actually gotten very little of him, probably because he's out of the direct sphere of Scott/Stiles at school.

There are plenty of people—including fanon Sterek shippers—who are asking for Danny/Stiles in canon.

You know, to the extent that we get to ask for things to happen in someone else's story.

I actually do see some Danny/Jackson around, though it's certainly not a big pairing. But the argument for why making Sterek canon would be "progressive" actually does hinge on Stiles and Derek not being visibly gay/bisexual characters; particularly for a teenager who is starting to realize they're bisexual and doesn't know how that works or if it makes them weird, seeing Stiles go through the same thing could be a huge help. Whereas Danny is a role model for gay teenagers only. Not that that's bad, definitely not, but there's far less representation of bisexual people than there is gay people.

As for pairing Stiles with Danny being more progressive than with Derek, there lies a danger of how the show would thus portray Danny. He has many more traits than just being the gay character, but having the show pair him with Stiles would lessen that and increase his role more to "Stiles' boyfriend" rather than "hacker and lacrosse player and Jackson's best friend and also gay", especially since he's a supporting character to begin with and isn't given as much depth as the main six. People on tumblr throw around the term "Gay Yoda", and it fits, too; Danny should not have to be the only example of homosexuality on the show, nor the magical being who knows everything about it and serves only to help Stiles. Whereas Derek, being in the main cast, is much more well-defined in terms of traits, so adding "likes dudes" onto there wouldn't become his primary focus. And him having no idea what to do with a gay/bisexual relationship (or relationships at all, really) would be both more interesting and more understandable to our theoretical confused bisexual teenager.

Of course there's nothing wrong with shipping Danny/Stiles, and there are some good arguments to be made for it. But I don't think it's more progressive than Derek/Stiles.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you assume it's either-or? I want Sterek to get together for the reasons you suggest and many, many more important ones AND I want Danny and his sex life (whether that be with a main character or not) to be more prominent on the show.

I'm not one of those shippers who will put together any two characters regardless of how little sense it makes. Frankly there's no real basis to ship Derek with Danny, and while I could see Stiles/Danny, I think the chemistry and potential between Stiles/Derek is better and a stronger foundation for a ship. I don't see how it's progressive to ship a gay character with someone else for the sole reason of "he's actually gay." One of the best parts about this show is that Danny's sexual orientation is not played to be Very Special Episode. People with attitudes like the OP's however make it that way. I'd rather see Danny's love life treated as awesomely as he is and have him put with someone perfect for him.

Also Danny is one of the prettiest members in the whole cast, so no, I don't ship Sterek just because I'm "in it for the pretty boys." I will agree that the debates over the ship are tiresome but only because Sterek is most likely not going to become canon anyway (hate to break it to you, fellow shippers).

I agree, I think that the argument that Sterek would be more progressive than anything else is false and any campaigning for it to be canon is mostly based in how these people love the ship. That said, I have no issue with people wanting and asking for their ship to become canon just because they love their ship, or for asking for more queer representation separately of that. Jeff Davis has been pretty open to fans' suggestions that Sterek could happen, so I think with this pairing, I can understand why fans are campaigning so much. Personally, I'll be happy as long as Stiles is bisexual, no matter the pairing or if he's even paired at all, even though Sterek is my OTP.

Also, since I don't find either Dylan O'Brien or Tyler Hoechlin attractive in the slightest, it would be difficult for me to ship them on the basis of them being pretty. I'm just saying.

If I remember correctly, I believe it's supposed to be progressive because they are two main characters instead of side characters. Also, if they were to become canon it would be...more of a pleasant surprise, I guess. In television, characters are defaulted as straight unless they outright say they're gay.

Those are my thoughts, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me introduce myself as a lesbian who's really pissed that there isn't more representation of GLBT people in media.

Let me then say that for Christ's sake, having a same-sex relationship between two characters is FUCKING MAJOR FOR US, I don't care who they are! I don't watch this show so I'm not invested in any of the ships, but if Sterek becomes canon, WOO. It's one step closer to acceptance. I'm also of the opinion that making Kirk/Spock canon in Star Trek would be awesome, because they're iconic characters that so many people love and Roddenberry basically confirmed that they were meant to be more than just friends. Giving the world two badass sci-fi heroes and then saying "hey look you can be gay without being camp AND you can save the universe!" would be FUCKING FABULOUS. (Personally I'd rather see Rand & Chapel but there you go.)

Anyway, if you're bitching that they're only in it for the pretty guys, how do we know you're not only in it because you like this Danny guy and want to see him with some other dude?

IDK man, any good representation of GLBT people is a good thing IMO.

I'm not even in this fandom but I find it endearing how sterek fans are hated by everyone. I can't wait until they start doing crazy manips and linking them to the actors' grandmothers.

Actually, I'd say that pairing two important male characters who haven't been introduced as Designated Gay Character is rather more progressive! I mean, has it ever happened?

Damn, I'm starting to care about what happens in Teen Wolf without even having seen a single episode, heh.

I don't see how forcing a character with another gay character is at ll progressive when the out gay character has NO INTEREST at all for the semi-bisexual one?

I really just hate it when people have this mindset that if there is a gay character, if you don't have them in your slash ship you are erasing them or something because, no.

It's about chemistry.
And anyway I've heard the only reason Danny has hardly had any screentime is because his actor is being difficult to work with.

I know, right? While Stiles might very well be bisexual (and I'd love it if he was, we don't get enough representation without some very annoying stereotypes) I don't see anything that tells me that Derek isn't broodingsexual straight. And that's not even my problem, my problem is that we have Danny, who is gooooorgeous and out and proud and there's very little shipping of other guys with him. I don't understand...but whatever.

Unfortunately, unless Danny answers "Yes" the next time Stiles asks Danny if he finds him attractive... Danny/Stiles, will probably never happen. Though, I would ~love~ to see that happen. I envision an enthusiastic Stiles-CrazyArmFlailing session, if Danny says yes, and then... maybe some making out?... Initiated by Stiles of course, or Danny, whichever. ;P I'm just glad the show treats being gay as basically a non-issue. Even though, that is not quite realistic, (YES, gay guys in high school still catch $#!t for it) I'm still happy to see a positive outlook about it on TV.

I want Stiles to be bisexual. So bad. There are hints like he's coming to terms with something. And I just see so much of myself in that. Like I didn't freak out or deny it, it just kind of came to me. And the only other bisexual character that I've ever liked is Cara from Legend of the Seeker. So yeah, I'm going to be selfish on this one.

As far as Sterek happening, I'm not against it. There'd have to be some careful writing for Derek not to seem like he had personality transplant. (Though if it did happen, I don't think you can deny that it would be a big deal.)

I would love if they brought Danny into the show more, let him interact with Jackson. I think their friendship is so weird and fun to watch. With Jackson being a pain in the ass and Danny not taking his shit. Also:
Danny- You're not my type.
Diva Jackson- I'm everyone's type.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Stiles/Danny, ftw!

So bisexuals aren't queer?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I guess them getting together and oh you know THEN BEING OUT AS BISEXUALS isn't progressive enough for you little pretend allies.

Nope, if a character is going to show any interest in the same sex they must announce their preference almost right away or else it's just queer baiting, and hahaha there aren't bisexuals Glee said so!

Fuck all of you.

THIS! SO EFFING MUCH!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
It actually would have some significance for gay representation, because they are main characters that are percieved as straight. To challenge that assumption has more weight than the existence of a token background gay dude.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Would it be progressive to put two seemingly straight (because straight is always the default unless expressively stated otherwise) main male characters together? Sure. But I doubt it will happen. I think the Teen Wolf writers just like teasing the audience to keep people happy. If they actually do go there, it would be great. I'd flip my shit if Stiles actually came out as bisexual and was portrayed in a good light (as so few bisexual characters are).

That being said, I'd wish it would happen between two characters on a more balanced level. Like Scott/Issac or something. They're both teenagers and both supernatural, so the power imbalance would be fairly minimal. Whereas with Stile/Derek you've got human/wolf and teenager/adult. It could potentially work in a fucked up way, but only if the writers acknowledge and address the power imbalance.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I hope it stays as subtext. I haven't particularly enjoyed the canon couples so far (very confusing with Allison constantly switching her...goals? personality? idk, I can't keep up with what she's thinking and feeling. Stiles obsession with Lydia creeps me out, considering I like the characters individually. Same again with Lydia's obsession with...Kanama dude...who's an asshole...I just haven'y enjoyed any of the romantic relationships)

Now the platonic relationships, familial relationships, pack relations and snarky interactions in the show I can get behind.
