I liked that part too. Despite being a superhero she seemed a lot more like a realistic portrayal than a lot of other moms. I feel she was a very relatable character. In essence, she was human. I liked her and hope to see more moms/women like her.

This.

TBH, this is probably my favourite PIXAR film....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I really loved the part where she tells the kids "This is not a fucking* game! These people WILL kill you." I don't know why I love that so much but I do. I guess you just don't hear adults tell kids that in the movies all that much.

*I may have added the swearing in my head.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my favorite part too! That she respects them enough to speak to them on that level, even if it's partly because she has to at that point.

Just another reason on the long list of why this movie is awesome.

Which is why THIS needs a sequel, because there's a good chance it could work wonderfully.

She was really cool. :)

The female characters in that movie were awesome in general, frankly. Four of them! With names, distinct personalities, and goals!

/I love this movie to death

Totally agree! I loved how everyone was characterized, I was actually really taken aback by it because I was so not expecting such...I dunno how to describe it, but you know, that oddly rough, raw, painfully honest vibe? Even for Pixar, it was pretty strong.

Heck yes! Come to think of it, Brad Bird had a great mom in The Iron Giant, too. I like the female characters in his movies in general...

Pixar seems to do better on that front than Disney. I thought Elinor in Brave was very realistic, too.

Disney just doesn't do parents (unless they are villains). You're singling out the mothers, but what can you really remember about the fathers? There are notably a few more developed characters, but they tend not to be complex. Triton is probably the most complex dad they ever did, and he's really not *that* complex. Stephan, Hubert, the Sultan, Maurice, the King, Mufasa, Fa Zhou...there are more, obviously, but my point is, most of them are just archetypes, not characters.

Mothers fall into two categories: heavenly or hellish. Fathers fall in to a different two: bumbling or wise.

Love her and love their family dynamic. It's what makes the movie great, imo.

Totally agree. She's my favorite character in that movie.

Yes. And that's why Pixar is awesome!

One of my favorite Pixar characters period, and definitely my favorite in that film.

Pixar DOES need more female leads, but the characters that exist are in many cases, really, really great.

This movie is like, offensively underrated.

Except from the same old "fat husband, thin attractive wife" trope...

That's sort of how I felt about Violet!
It was nice to see a teenage girl character who was an angsty teenager and wasn't portrayed as being an unsympathetic asshole for it, or in a really pretentious, manic pixie dream girl-y obnoxious way. She was just shown as a human being who was going through a hard time, and we're neither supposed to hate her or be fascinated by her for it, we're just supposed to sympathise and I can't express how much that means to me as an angsty teenage girl myself.
But yeah, Helen was a great portrayal of moms, too!

Not only that, but she had a womanly figure with, like, hips!
