Well, I don't really know much of the background of this, but Chevy Chase is notoriously a dick, so you're probably right.

I kind of hate Chevy Chase after watching a bunch of behind the scenes and blooper vids on YouTube. He seems like such an ass. After watching those I can totally see how he might be the reason for the firing, but I wish they had gotten rid of Chevy instead.

Pierce is old, they could have killed him off :P

But also Dan Harmon was a genius but also kind of a dick. Chevy may have been the last straw, but the firing had been a threat for a while.

They both should have gone. Firings for all!

Both Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon would be difficult to work with. I mean, Chevy Chase is notoriously and famously an enormous, enormous dick who alienated everyone in Hollywood over the course of his career. And Dan Harmon, while I like his work and he seems like a decent guy, he's also an extremely neurotic perfectionist with major self-esteem issues who lacks interpersonal skills and is hideously awkward. So I can imagine that either one of them would be difficult to work with and both together would be hell, and I'm sure that Chevy exacerbated Dan and Dan baited Chevy.

I think the firing probably didn't have so much to do with Chevy. I'm sure Dan was a pain in the ass to work with and, if they're renewing it without much of a budget or expectations for ratings, I can see how they'd not want to deal with Harmon anymore. Like, I really don't think you can overstate the importance of the fact that they're really just playing Community out.

um

dan harmon is autistic

i get that he was an asshole for reasons unrelated to his autism status but when you point out " perfectionist with major self-esteem issues who lacks interpersonal skills and is hideously awkward" you're pretty much making autism seem like a bad thing.

that said his sexist bullshit and use of slurs on his twitter meant i wasn't sad to see him go.

Community secret :D :D :D Hot damn, you made my day!

I know what you mean, though. I'm a little hesitant too. But I've seen some shots of the actors having fun at the table reads and I've heard a bunch about some plotlines for next season that sound legitimate so I'm going to give it a go anyway. It might end up not being quite as magical, but some of the old writers are still on board and the characters are very well established already from three seasons of the show, so it shouldn't be too hard for the show to at least be decent. I watched their panel at Comic Con on youtube and the new guys seem really committed to making it good, so we'll see.

Plus Abed is going to an Inspector Spacetime convention so I'm kind of super excited for at least that episode :D

Also Chevy Chase is a dick, but Dan Harmon even admits himself that he was also a dick, and some of season 3 was wayyyy out there so I'm not really surprised he got fired and I don't blame Chase completely for the firing.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well one person doesn't write all the episodes and do all the work on a show, right? So while it may not be the same it probably won't be terrible because they still have a lot of the same people working on it.

that's true, though i think dan was still the driving force behind some of the show. also some of the writers left when harmon was fired, iirc, so it's not just one person.

This. ngl that a showrunner leaving isn't going to make me a teensy bit wary, but Harmon wasn't the only writer anyways. I'd be more worried about the show if the entire team was sacked.

Harmon was a super perfectionist though, and overlooked everything so that'd fit into his vision perfectly, until about the end of season three (which was also when the worst of the tensions with hte network that lead to his firing started up). So without him, the show will be completely different. Granted, it could be good as long as they try to make it their own thing and not attempt to mimick Harmon's style, but it will not be like the first three seasons.

Personally, I think they should have gone with one of the more prominent writers who was already on the show so that they could at least seem like it was just Harmon's personality that they didn't like, not the show itself. I'm happy that some of the older writers are still there, at least.

Sorry if this comment makes no sense. I'm really tired xD

I love Dan Harmon, but after listening to the podcast Harmontown, I think anybody can see exactly why working with him would be...difficult. Just trying to picture him and Chevy Chase in the same room kind of makes my brain hurt.

can we please not with dh's awkwardness and self esteem problems being a bad thing

because he is autistic

and a lot of his quirks were due to his autism

there are a lot of reasons dh sucks, his being autistic is not one of them.

He's never been diagnosed by a professional or anyone else but himself. He's a great artist and everything, and it's fine that he's found comfort and stuff by researching for a character with a disorder, but in my opinion at the moment he's no more officially autistic than half of the socially awkward self diagnostic nerds on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
But awkwardness and self esteem problems that manifest in negative ways are a negative.

He is also not diagnosed as autistic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh just- Really? Really now? Let me tell you something. I am autistic. I have a diagnosis from several psychologists. I've been to therapy (and subsequently decided 'screw therapy I can do better on my own') and the awkwardness and self-esteem issues? Yes, I have them. And a gazillion other things that make social interaction very hard.

THEY ARE BAD THINGS.

They mess up my life. They make it almost impossible for me to get a job because I have no idea how to function at job interviews. I can't go out to the pub because I have melt downs. If I try to be spontaneous I can't enjoy myself because it feels like I have no control. I am highly sensitive to auditory input to the point where I would have panic attacks almost daily on my commutes to university.

BAD. THINGS.

Does that mean that I think autism is bad? No. I wouldn't want a cure, but I could do without some of the symptoms. I love being able to see details. I love remembering stuff that other people easily forget. I love being able to see things from a different point of view.

I am not exempt from criticism simply because I have a diagnosis on the spectrum. In fact, I welcome it because it gives me a chance to learn and develop as a person.

JFC. Anyone who watches Community--with a character like Abed, who tries to modify his social awkwardness and bad behavior to make his friends more comfortable and when he doesn't gets called out on it--and then turns around and excuses DH's social awkwardness and bad behavior because "he can't help it" is seriously not paying attention.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sigh. My feelings are very similar. On one hand I want the show to be good, because I love the actors and the remaining writers, on the other hand ... even if they manage to keep making a good show, I'd still be sour because I'm not okay with how Harmon was treated. I get that he's difficult to work with, but he still delivered 3 stellar seasons of television as a showrunner, and he fought very hard to maintain the show's quality and tone throughout. So it feels like they took away his baby or something.

As someone else has stated above, though, it seems pretty obvious that the network has given up on the show and that its time is limited in any case, which breaks my heart because it was my favorite thing on TV.

Regarding the thing with Chevy, I think they both acted like massive douchebags and it was seriously embarrassing to follow the whole thing. But I wouldn't rule out that it factored into Harmon not returning as a showrunner, which sucks.

Considering how gut-wrenchingly awful s3 was, I don't have very high hopes for s4.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's a little strong, surely?

I definitely prefer s2, but s3 had its moments. There's definitely several episodes that are watchable. "Gut-wrenchingly awful" is really strong language, is what I guess I am trying to say here.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even watch Community, but all these "Chevy Chase is a humongous, arrogant dick" comments make me think of the original Weekend Update sketches on S1 of Saturday Night Live where he'd always go: "Good evening. I'm Chevy Chase, and you're not." Judging from the comments, this seems like a good summation of at least half of the situation.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase are both assholes, but as a fan I of course would've much rather kept Harmon and ditched Chase. Harmon was essential to the show's DNA, while IMO Pierce is by far the weakest link in the cast.

By all accounts, though, Harmon is one of those temperamental artistes that makes an absolutely horrible manager. The Chase incident was likely the very last straw, and TBH I probably would've fired DH too if I was a Sony/NBC suit whose job depended on these decisions.

I am worried about next season, but I'm tentatively hopeful. A lot of the writers are still there, like Megan Ganz (she wrote the bottle episode! And the Law & Order one. and the Hearts of Darkness one)

but it's awful what they did to Harmon. Truly, truly shitty. I don't blame Chase, although he's a dick and always has been, it was a network thing. They just swept his own show right out from under him. (Did you read his blog post about it? It's heartbreaking)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Late to the party but ooh, Community secret! I'm incredibly worried for season 4. This show has never got the recognition it deserved and I doubt it will this season either especially after how poorly paced season 3 was overall...pretty sure it's going to be cancelled, especially without Harmon on board (say what you like about his personality, dude knows stuff).

Not entirely sure where I heard it because I can't find it again but I think Danny Pudi or one of the other actors said something along the lines of season 4 not having the same essence without Harmon which I believe is actor for "they've fucked it" :(
