Huh, what a coincidence, just yesterday I was talking to a friend about TNG and how Guinan was my favorite character, only to learn that he hated her (and Whoopi Goldberg's work in general). Hating Guinan... it just doesn't compute.

Maybe the dude was a conservative who hates any of the hosts of The View. I'm a conservative and I don't hate anyone on The View. I may not agree with their views(pun unintended), but I don't hate them. I've always liked Whoopi's work, so I don't get how anyone could hate Guinan. She's like, my fave character after Data.

tl;dr I don't get the Guinan hate either.

It's not just conservatives who hate the hosts of The View. I've never seen that connection.

Nah, we're in Germany, I don't think we even get The View here. He said she can't act. Which reminded me of that fandom secret from earlier this week, about how good/bad acting is largely in the eye of the beholder.

I was a Whoopi fan before I watched TNG and she's the only character I could really connect to, for some reason.

I was never in TNG fandom, so I really don't get that. Guinan seemed, like, really inoffensive as a character? Kind of calm, kind of quirky, had her flaws. Why don't people like her?

I know, right? I was never in the fandom either, just watched the show with a roommate who also loved her. I always kind of assumed she was universally liked.

I was surprised when I lurked into TNG fandom and discovered the Guinan-hate, too, but from my experience... yeah, this secret is completely accurate. Guinan has been one of my favourite TNG characters since I used to watch it with my dad when they were still running new episodes of the show and I was but a wee little thing.

She's also one of the only characters from any fandom ever that I have actually "shipped" with another character... and oh man did I get a whole lot of the internet equivalent of people staring at me like I had a dick growing from my forehead when I mentioned this.... because I totally ship Guinan with Ro Laren.

That is apparently one of the weirdest things it is possible to do in a fandom already famous for being full of weird people. I don't get it. Yeah they're minor characters but they have awesome chemistry onscreen in the episodes they're in together. Plus they both have fascinating backstories and really strong personalities -- Guinan in particular, given she's essentially a Time Lord. Like, if Doctor Who ever regenerated into a black chick, I'm pretty sure it would be Guinan. Hell, given the ambiguity surrounding the exact nature of... whatever the hell she is... and insinuations by Q... as far as anyone knows, maybe she IS a Time Lord. But whatever she is, Whoopi gives really a perfect performance for her.

Also she has the most awesome hats on the show. WHY NO LOVE, FANDOM? WHYYYYY??

...Gotta say. Never considered that ship before, but now I'm honestly liking the idea.

And yeah, I can't unsee Guinan = Time Lord. Especially with Assimiltion.

Ro Laren is all "FUCK EVERYTHING AND KILL IT WITH GUNS ARGLEFLARGLEBLARGLE"
and Guinan is all "Hey, relax, it's just a six-eyed Yeti thing. 'Sup, six-eyed Yeti thing? I bet I can make some really weird cocktail that I somehow know the recipe for from when I visited your home planet and totally chilled with your king president whatever. Why don't we all sit down and have a chat?"

and then they do and Ro probably sulks about it and keeps argleflargleblargling for a bit and threatening to shoot things in the face but no one cares anymore because Guinan got this shit under control.

Until an assassin six-eyed Yeti thing shows up and goes at her and Ro Laren shoots it in the face and saves everyone's asses while Guinan secures a peace treaty between six-eyed Yeti things and whatever the fuck six-eyed Yeti things hate... probably Hobbits.





........but less weird-sounding scenarios would be cool too. And then Guinan and Ro would ride off into the GSC 03549-02811-set and do each other's nails and shoe some centipede-zebras and make out before going back to Guinan's TARDIS.




And this is why I'm too weird even for Trekkies. XD

(I haven't got into fandom, per se, since I've only seen TNG and Voyager, and am... not really a fan of TOS. Maybe we can have our own little weird corner of it.)

Sorta. I actually see them more as equals. In Doctor Who the companions tend to be there partly to help the Doctor, but also largely to be his Watsons... people who serve as the standard of normalcy in order to emphasize just how smart and eccentric and wise and ruthless the Doctor is compared to mere humanity. I see Guinan and Ro as being more like... um... Timon and Pumbaa, or Bert and Ernie, or Lumiere and Cogsworth, or... you get the idea. They're very different people with very different strengths but neither truly "outranks" the other (except in military terms.... I have no fucking clue whether Guinan even has a rank or if whatever it is falls above or below Ensign).

I'm not really involved in fandom either, since it's straight-up clear as crystal no one else in most fandom communities seems to share my interest in either of those characters and I get satisfaction enough discussing my other favourite characters and watching old episodes with my wife. I got lucky that way. ^_____^

I'm pretty sure Guinan isn't even an officer on the ship, but I imagine that she's straight up nobility in some corners of the universe.

Oh, true... Timon and Pumbaa, huh? (Now with less bug-eating!) Maybe if it was a Doctor-and-companion dynamic, it'd be more like Four and Romana - two Time Lords on fairly equal ground. And yeah, if Guinan had a rank, I don't remember it.

Ah well XD I'm trying to work out if anyone, anyone would be interested in a Zelda and Voyager crossover...

And really, I love the BFF chemistry just as much as the hypothetical slash potential. When I say I "ship" them, what I mainly mean is that I am attracted to both of them and therefor logically it would be just as awesome if both of them agreed with me about one another. And slash chemistry can be just BFF chemistry with more tongue, right? So there you go! It works!

Are you aware that there's an official Doctor Who/ST:TNG crossover comic book happening right now? Eleven meets Guinan. I don't know the details beyond that, but yeah.
