You know, I only watched it a few weeks ago and the total opposite happened to me. I was sure I wouldn't find Loki sympathetic at all and then I ended up agreeing with the rest of the internet (which is super rare) except for the part where Odin is an ass.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
so you find loki sympathetic?

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I don't think there's a single way to come up with ANYTHING regarding opinions on Odin in this movie, he's casually and indirectly referenced ONCE just as "their father".

Bonus info!
The image was originally titled JustOkieDokieLoki but then Imageshack was a bitch and would neither let me use nor recover my old email/password and I was too out of care to make up a sockpuppet photobucket or find another website that lets you leave image names. /)

wait, you never leave your house for more than 3 hours at a time? Or am I misreading that?

It seems not. Sounds like a rough road for things like this. no way you can go months without getting spoilers/hype for something like this.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just don't want to pay to spend three hours out of their day doing something, when they can watch it on DVD and multi-task.

He has a really dumb expression in that photo.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I chose that one partially because he's got a sort of "... huh." half puzzled half frowing expression going on which neatly matched my own when I was examining my reaction towards the actually-experienced performance versus hype-expected one.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh, Loki was the worst part of the film for me. I loved everything and everyone else, and the only times I liked him was whenever the other characters were getting one over on him.

I keep going back and forth with my roommate about how I think Loki was a crappy villain because I didn't find him terribly threatening or even effectual, and her telling me that "he's not SUPPOSED to be!!!" So then I get confused, because then why was he used as the villain at all (except to bring Thor into the mix)?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your secret, but it sounds like you went straight to watching The Avengers; skipping Thor. And you kinda need to see that movie first, in order to understand where the character is coming from.

This is me, too. All my flist at LJ where lasdkhfgdsdkhOMFGHE'SOAWESOME and spaming me like crazy for months. I watched Thor and I was 'Mmm it might be true~' then watched the Avenger a few weeks ago and I was :/ 'is this all?'

I find him quite plain and not villian material at all D: (I just think just his looks more appetizing than Thor's)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Loki and Hiddeston fan, and while I do like Loki in the film and admire the actor, unlike many of his fans, I completely respect your opinion OP.

this is the problem with coming in after a fandom has had a long time to simmer though-- it happens with every fandom. Certain characters connect with people from the start, and they are very vocal about their love and create more and more and MORE fanworks and build their fanon about this character and his/her relationships, and people on the outside who get glimpses of it think that this character is the star or most interesting, when in reality it might not be that way at all. See also: people just starting Teen Wolf who think Stiles and Derek share every scene, etc

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-30 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I know where you're coming from, but I didn't think you were supposed to find him sympathetic in The Avengers? I myself only found him *slightly* sympathetic because I watched Thor first and after I mined his scenes for hints of conflictedness (read: his scenes with Thor). Mostly, I just got a huge kick out of watching him strutting around bragging his head off and being a vicious, ill-tempered, self-entitled, awesomely entertaining and hammy little shit for 2/3rds of the movie, and then getting his ass kicked over and over and over until he ceased to become threatening and became hilarious for the last 1/3rd.

I didn't really watch the movie for him, nor did I really care about his role in the movie. He was more catalyst than villain, to be quite honest. In a lot of movies, it really does matter how great the villain is, but in this movie because the hero needs a meaningful obstacle to overcome, but I think the reason I didn't care that he was incompetent and not that compelling was because he wasn't the Avengers' arch-enemy. The Avengers' archenemy was themselves. Their conflicts with each other, their personal demons, their oversized, overcrowded personalities. Loki was just there to make it matter and bring it to light.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is why I saw Thor the day it came out---I had no expectations, especially not any based on hype, and I ended up loving the whole thing, including Loki. See Thor---that's where Loki's angst is.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's ok OP. I think Hiddleston has enough Loki feelings, to fill an entire fandom.

If you haven't seen Thor then watch that too. All the angst is there.

Huh, Red Skull was my favorite thing about Captain America, with Steve being a close second because oh my god Steve why are you so adorable? But then I'm someone who usually likes the villains more than the heroes, loved Loki in Thor then loved him even more in Avengers. I do my best to avoid any hype surrounding a TV show/movie/book though because invariably it's never going to live up to what people say.

He had a little more nuanced behavior in Thor than in the Avengers. He was just revenge hungry in the new movie.

If you paid attention to the hype, you probably would've also noticed the anti-hype...

Am I the only one who's getting SO sick of feeling ashamed to like Loki? "Oh, you only like him 'cause he's hot - he's a terrible awful character and you should feel bad for liking him!" Yeah, he's handsome. But I also empathize with him about constantly feeling second best and having "The Ace" as a sibling (and I want to give him a hug and tell him he's not a monster). Do I think he's a perfectly innocent little woobie? Nope, dude pulled some jackass moves. He's a flawed character, and to be honest, I see a lot of myself in him. Haters to the left!

I saw the Avengers twice and I didn't think he was extraordinary either. Great plot device? Yes. Entertaining? Hell yes. Angsty? Not really. Amazing? Nope.

Doesn't stop me from reading redemption!Loki fics.

Also, I thought the movie was amazing for how well it was put together and not because of any individual characters.

[identity profile] gully-moe.livejournal.com 2012-10-02 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I am with you. I actually have seen Thor and I LIKED LOKI. I really did. But in Avengers he kind of sucked for some reason. I thought it over after seeing it again on DVD. I think it's because he wanted to have power over Earth, and I'm like, really? You want to try to rule Earth? Haven't a lot of villain's wanted that in other stories? It just seems over done. It just seemed so lame when he said to all those people at the art museum, BOW TO ME. But he wasn't even being cheesy. I don't know what it is. In Thor, he wanted to be King in Asgard, and that's a different place. It is a fantasy place, and there is SUPPOSED to be a King, and it's a place full of gods, plus we get to see his back story. But even knowing his back story and character, in Avengers he just didn't seem appealing to me anymore. His goal was very lame, and I think that is the very reason why I didn't get into him. There is no problem with him as a character. He has a cool ability and he does play mind games... but I think it was his overall aspiration throughout the movie. Henceforth, it didn't give much suspense, because you KNOW the Avengers are going to win. Okay, those aliens coming from that hole in the sky did make things a little edgy... =D
