I will never admit this un-anon

But I though humon was universally hated? Wait, isn't she the one who didn't know that Irish is a real language?

Wait, back this thread up, what?

Pretty sure that was meant to be part of the joke? Like the America character didn't know Irish was a real language and thought it was a different English dialect like the others listed? Or at least, that's how I took it.

That isn't just reaching, that is Cirque du Soleil bending.

I spat coffee, thanks >:

This is from her author comment on the same page:

"I was highly amused when an American told me he wanted to be more worldly by leaning languages and listed Irish as one of them. I know there's a few words that's different, but it still sounded funny.

EDIT: Okay so he probably meant Irish Gaelic, but then say Irish Gaelic. You'd be surprised by how little I know about languages so it helps to be specific. ;)"

I've had no opinion up until now, but oh WOW.

It's like...a perfect turnaround. She thinks it's funny Americans are so uneducated about different cultures, to the point of mistaking a different dialect as a different language--when, in reality, she was so uneducated she didn't know that Irish was actually a language. She tries to save face, but calling the language plain "Irish" is proper. You'd have to WANT to see the person you're speaking to as an idiot to think that they must have meant the "English language as spoken by Irishman" instead of "Irish Gaelic" when one says they're trying to learn "Irish", when speaking to you in English.

I mean, we she believes she represents a typical Dane, why would she make a joke about Americans not knowing much about languages, when she freely admits she doesn't?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really sad considering.

Although, I think most Americans know that Irish Gaelic exist considering the history of the Irish settlers in America, IMO.

This is my main issue with humon: she's fucking ignorant.

As an American, I'm not going to say we're highly culturally aware BUT we're pretty good about other English dialects. Why? Because speakers of those dialects live in the US or feature in popular TV shows or movies. If monolingual English speakers can understand it, it's English. The proper English name for the English spoken in Ireland is Hiberno-English, Irish English, or just English. You can't say "Irish" and mean anything but Irish Gaelic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
See, I knew that Ireland had another language, but I always thought of it as "Gaelic" not Irish. So I may be just as ignorant as she is.

Oh, good Lord, that one is bad for so many reasons. For one thing, portraying America as not knowing that Spanish is a real language when it's the second most spoken language in the country. What? How did she even get to that conclusion? How ignorant is this artist?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
She's Danish, isn't she? I guess she doesn't really research things. I mean I guess she didn't want to break America's 'LOL I AM SO IGNORANT' character that she didn't realize that it's pretty likely America would at least known (or even speak now since he turned brown to reflect the rising Latin@ population) but it doesn't still make sense since she could took the 'ENGLISH ONLY' route.

But I do hate her America though.

Didn't he turned brown because of Obama winning the election? I don't follow the comic, but I think I remember that coming up on Deviantart..

He turned brown because of the black population.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Really fucking ignorant. She has no clue about the US (for example, she thinks the US is getting more black, not more Hispanic) and doesn't want to learn, yet uses the country as the butt of most of her jokes. It's annoying, too, because most Americans don't know where Scandinavia is, let alone care enough to be constantly meddling in their business.

I mean, this would be like me writing a comic making fun of Finland not knowing Swedish is a real language and being scared that the German population is wildly increasing. She has no idea what she's talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike humon as well, but please take a look at American satire such as Family Guy. Don't tell me they always do research on the topics they want to take a piss on. They just want to offend and make people laugh about others.

The thing is that humon's America obviously is an American stereotype. I live in Germany and one common joke about Americans is that they're ignorant and proud of it.
It doesn't matter if real Americans do this or that, HER America is a stereotype and so he will behave according to this.

Her comics are nothing but stereotypes, most of them negative.
I wouldn't even care for them if she wouldn't constantly state that everything she draws is truth and has RL reasons.
After all those years I prefer to think of her as an epic troll. I can handle her shit better that way.

Sweet mother of God, if you're from Texas or any state bordering Mexico, your ass had better learn at least a little Spanish to be fully functional. I don't live Stateside atm, and will soon be moving back to a heavily Hispanic area (I'm originally from Texas, but carrying off to Cali), and I'm considering learning Spanish for this very reason. The last time I was home, maybe it was because I had been away so long, but Spanish is everywhere.

Now; one would be forgiven for modifying that a little: for a while there were some dumb shits on the fringes whining about how much Spanish is spoken in America. So it would be more accurate for America to be bitching about how "we speak English in America!" but it still wouldn't be accurate to say that everyone in America feels the same way. They lost the argument about press one for English, after all.

The very same. But that's hardly the only problem people have with her. Just the latest.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people love her actually. Especially some of the Hetalia-haters here on F!S.

But after that 'LOL BLACK PEOPLE ARE MONKEYS' joke and the fact she has two Germanys so there's a Nazi Germany and modern Germany but doesn't do that for the rest of the countries and that godawful Axis Powers picture that do not put Italy and Japan in a flattering light at all (but Germany was spared that).

But her attitude is pretty gross and unbearable and it does color her comic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
She...has actually stated that Germany was good to Denmark because it told the Jews to leave but didn't kill them. Fuck humon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was cool she made Germany two characters.
She didn't do it for the other "ex-Nazi" countries because, let's be honest, in most other satire Germany or German people are always presented as Nazis or at least they are nazi-esque and that is something I never see done to the other "ex" countries.

So yeah, that was refreshing to see.

Also Germany is Denmark's direct neighbor and it's true that the Danes rely on German tourists. So she probably has a different connection to German people than to, for example, Italians.
All of her shit is biased, so that wouldn't surprise me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I haven't seen enough satire on Germany.

Woo, tangent

This thread made me think of this bittersweet short film about a Chinese man who decides to move to Ireland and so learns Gaelic (Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom [My Name Is Yu Min]):
