well, you're the one who bought into the hype in the first place. and... he's never said that, i think most people in the fandom do know this, it's just wishful thinking, jeez.

OP. I saw tons of people doing somersaults in celebration of what an amazing ship this is. So yep, I thought the hordes were on to something.

There is no pairing, slash or straight, that is not subjective.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't want to be the one to point it out, but I think your secret totally nailed the basis for that ship. Young fans, a simple supernatural show, kind of campy, lots of attractive (to some) guys, etc. It's pure shipping fodder.

(Also, what is this new trend in promotion photos that there's some inhuman-looking white guy just standing front and center with everyone fanned behind him doing action poses? Has this always been a thing that I just didn't notice?)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Errr... wtf? The main guy isn't white.

teenyboober fanbase - idts, tbh. there are a lot of teens, for sure, but TW inherited a lot of supernatural's old-time fans.

burly, brooding, aggressive guy/virginal younger dude. size kink. age difference kink. power difference (supernatural creature/human) kink.

sterek just hits a lot of popular kinks.

I'm getting a little tired of these secrets. Obviously, some people see it and some people don't, or rather some people interpret their character interactions in a certain way and others don't. Neither one is wrong. If you don't get the pairing or you don't like it, that's fine. There are pairings built on a lot less. I like both characters and I think they have an interesting dynamic.

I think that in every fandom there are pockets of very enthusiastic fans who, well, oversell whatever they're interested in and maybe get somewhat overinvested, but I don't think that it's necessarily the sole territory of younger fans. I do think that, as a rule, a fandom with a lot of younger fans and fans new to fandom will tend to be more exuberant and less cynical.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither one is wrong.
Except when they are wrong and a ship will never ever happen. Not that that should stop people from enjoying themselves, but I think some people put too much expectations for a ship to be real and make themselves miserable.

Same, OP. I went into it thinking 'Wow, I can't wait for all that subtext I've heard so much about' and...nothing. I don't see it at all.

I think I'd give my right arm if in the new season the writers revealed the reason why Derek seems to sort of watch out for Stiles now and then by him going up real close to Stiles and saying, "You remind me of my sister."

Half the Sterek fandom would go, "WHAT? No! NO!!!" While the other half would go, "Derek wanted to sleep with his sister?"

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a fic last night where Derek compared Stiles (and Stiles' effect on Derek) to his sister pretty extensively before sexy times so... IAWTC

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there is really anything wrong with being reminded of a sibling you lost in someone you are sexually/romantically attracted to. Because well, they aren't actually related. So if you got along with the sibling, why is it wrong to want to fill the void they left?

eh I think a lot of people who started watching after Sterek became the fandom OTP see it that way. I know I was wondering wtf was going on when they had no scenes together.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why people keep calling this show "campy and ridiculous"? I mean, I get that you'd think it was ridiculous if you think the concept of werewolves is ridiculous, but otherwise? ... It seems to take itself pretty seriously to me.
velvet_mace: (Default)

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-10-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it is campy. I like that it's campy. Campy just means that you don't think too hard about how this would really go down if it were real life, because if you did then there'd be a lot more horror involved.

Campy means you can get away with having a character being wacked in the head with an engine part and tossed unconscious into a dumpster and not have the next scene take place in the hospital or the morgue, with a lot of people deadly serious about attempted murder and Stiles never, ever forgiving Erica.

Let's face it, if it weren't campy, the first time Scott chased Stiles around the locker room with his claws out would have ended with Scott being shot to death by Stiles dad, not Stiles sticking around to help his friend learn how to control himself, because shit, that would be scary.

TL;DR Campy keeps things light and fun rather than dark and stomach churning.

LOL. No, Sterek is entirely fanon. It's just purely a case of two personality types that go great together: The bouncy, energetic optimist and the cool, broody pessimist. The joker and the straight man. It's a very active dynamic that's fun to write and read. It doesn't hurt that apparently the actors have decided to ship tease.

I kind of see the reason Sterek got so popular as a little formulaic.

Relatable nerdy kid + brooding bad boy + invasion of personal space= slash ship

Multiply by the fact that they pretend to hate each other but help each other and work together when needed.

It's a thing fandom goes for. I actually like their dynamic a lot but it's hardly the only one I like in the show.

A male being jealous of/disliking another male = pairing. This has been so since the dawn of Fandom.

T'is a silly place.

[identity profile] 1001cranes.livejournal.com 2012-10-07 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
honestly, mostly the bit about the teeny bopper fandom made me lawl. I don't have the exact numbers at my fingertips - people of tumblr, I know you have them - but something like 60% of the viewers are 20+, and I think a decent percentage on top of that were 30+.

baby's first slash ship. laughing myself in a coma, jesus.

*high-five OP* I saw the pairing everywhere on Tumblr and thought I'd give it a go, if a show was being that obvious about a ship. Jokes on us, eh? I could see so much potential in all the characters for good ships...but Sterek just fell flat for me.

I agree that probably a good portion of the Sterek fandom is made up of young kids getting into fandom heavily for the first time. Perhaps a lot of the non-Sterek fans are old-school fandom folk who have seen this sort of pairing in so many other fandoms that we are wanting something different? I don't know...could be interesting to look into!

But yeah, Sterek is getting to the point where it is eye-roll inducing especially given the ~social justice~ side of the fandom. Err, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
THIS! There is no basis for Sterek in the show that actually qualifies this mass hysteria people have about this pairing. It's twilight all over again with a bunch of teenage sheep falling all over themselves to like the same thing because of group mentality.

Sorry, this just pisses me the hell off because Sterek fans are so happy to shoot all other potential pairings (which there would be a lot of!) in this show out of the water. What show are sterek fans even watching? If Sterek ever becomes canon I know I won't be watching Teen Wolf anymore, which is a pity because I do love it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding the teenybopper and baby's first slash ship thing, I think that there are a lot of fandom newbies and young fans in the TW fandom (lol me), yep, but like an anon above said, there are a surprising number of 20/30-somethings and fandom vets watching. I was really amazed that one of the most popular meta essays on why Sterek *will* become canon was written by someone who fits both those categories. But that's how they know it'll become canon - because it's supposedly "different" this time? Idk. And for some reason, TW has attracted loads of BNFs and MNFs from other fandoms, the majority of whom ship Sterek. Which is only fueling the hype.

Put me down as another vote for “doesn’t see the Derek / Stiles subtext AT ALL”. And I’m the kind of person who watches Supernatural or Sherlock (or the latest SH movie for that matter) and wonders how people who don’t like slash can even stand to watch the show. In Teen Wolf I actually think Derek / Scott would be really hot, but I’m like the ONLY person who thinks so, judging by the fanfiction I’ve seen. But then again I’ve never got the whole “adversaries who secretly want to screw each other” thing AT ALL. For me, I want to have sex with people I like, and I just dislike the people I dislike. Like, I’m not at all confused about it. There has literally never been anyone that I’ve had yelling fights with and then realized that I secretly wanted to fuck them. I’ve always just thought that was a total Hollywood invention. But of course a lot of people like that trope, so whatever floats your boat, right? I just don’t see it, AT ALL. And for the record, I’m not saying that Styles / Derek could NEVER happen, I’m just saying that I haven’t seen the subtext in the show. And honestly I don’t think that Derek particularly dislikes Styles or anything; I think he’s just kind of a gruff guy (who’s been dealt kind of a shitty hand to play) in general.

I just watched this show as well, since so many of my friends are raving about it. With the sheer amount of Sterek going on in fandom, and all the promises that the show was totally Sterek-centric, I felt really disappointed to discover that it was actually quite lacking in canon. It still turned out to be a fun show, though.
