YEEEEEY MUSE SECRET :DDDDD

I kind of know what you mean. The lyrics are mostly awful, especially recently. I think Absolution and BHaR have good lyrics for hte most part, but almost everything before those are just bizzare and pretty obviously written on shrooms and almost everything after those are cliche and written at a third grade level. I love the new album, but I would probably love it more if Matt sang in a language I didn't understand (though tbh I don't like how his voice sounds on it either).

I can't really listen to them without the vocals, because Matt's voice is a huge part of why I love Muse, and I'm actually pretty fond of those early, non-sensical lyrics for their badness. However, I can see why you'd want to. The instrumentals are still amazing, the vocals are needed for them to be great songs.

Hm, I'm pretty fond of the lyrics for The Resistance, but I agree with you about the new album. I've heard a few of their songs from their new album so far and their lyrics just sound like they've given up in terms of writing them :P

"M-m-m-m-m-mad mad" What are you on about, Matt Bellamy?

somewhat OT, but kind of relevant- I just realised yesterday that you're in the ontd_muse comm! I saw a comment by you there and was like "oh hey, it's cherrycoloured from fandomsecrets!"
..That's my cool story for the day. =P I feel like I should have realised this sooner, but it's been a while since there's been much activity in the world of Muse. so yeah.

More on topic, I don't really think the lyrics are as terrible as you think they are- I think Hoodoo is a good example of a song with lyrics in it that kind of gave me chills, for instance. At any rate, I don't think it's too much of a problem because Muse tend to not take themselves too seriously all the time, even if some of their songs can be pretty serious sounding.

I never thought I'd see the day when a Muse secret headlined an FS post , but I'm glad I stayed to see it happen :).

I kinda agree with cherrycoloured - as awesome as the instrumentals are, I prefer them with Matt's voice to them (though I thought it sounded a bit wonky on the new album - maybe it's because they produced the record by themselves?) But the lyrics of Resistance and 2nd Law were a bit... naive, or something like that. I like the shroomed up songs better. Though, I'd love to analyze the lyrics for some Doctor's thesis sometimes, just for the fun of it.

...This is kind of funny, because I love the lyrics on the earlier albums far more than the post-Absolution stuff. But then, "bizarre and pretty obviously written on shrooms" is fine by me, since my usual preferred genre is classic rock. I love the Doors, for instance, and that pretty well sums up Jim Morrison. XD Still love the instrumentals and some of the lyrics, though, and Muse is one of like... three modern bands whose albums I'll actually buy sight-unseen.

I really don't have any response to this, except to say that I will always, always, always find the fact that Glenn Beck is a Muse fan hilarious. It's just the funniest thing in the world to me.

So, given that, maybe you're not so wrong to dislike the lyrics...

I always thought they were fictional - until an American asked me if it's true that Kasabian are as big as Muse in the UK - and I said, "well, Kasabian are big, and Muse are in Twilight!"

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I just try not to pay much attention to the lyrics. The instrumentals are lovely, but Matt's voice is one of my favourite things about Muse, and IMO his vocals have only gotten better.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is partly why I like my favorite band -- their lyrics are in a language I don't know. ;)

Hm I think a lot of the lyrics in The Resistance are pretty fun (very partial to Guiding Light and Resistance and Uprising) but I would agree that the majority of their lyrics are not very memorable. I am really very fond of their music and I want to get their new album but from what I've heard their new lyrics are indeed even more forgettable than the ones from the majority of The Resistance.

I find Save Me's lyrics quite touching, given their about Chris Wolstenholme dealing with his alcoholism, and a couple songs don't even have lyrics.

I don't think the lyrics are that bad on The 2nd Law. Maybe a bit more hit and miss than other albums.

Heh been a Muse fan for years and never been over fond of Matt's lyrics, which is hard when you're trying to explain this to fans who are convinced Matt is some sort of soulful poet and you're wrong for saying otherwise. I got called not a true fan once for saying I don't like most of his lyrics! I almost wanted to calculate how much I've spent on them over the years as a way of saying "lolno!" but that would've been a dick move.

Huh, the one Muse album I have I kind of like the lyrics (Black Holes and Revelations) but...I really like melodramatic stuff and I like lyrics that remind me of characters I write fanfic for (and the villain in my main fandom is a theatrical anarchist conspiracy theorist, so...yeah).

I wish I liked Muse more than I do. A lot of people recommend them, and I feel I should like their songs on principle, but the lead singer's voice annoys me too much.

I like 'em both ways. It depends on my mood. Though one of my favorite songs ever is the String Quartet version of Time Is Running Out.

MUSE SECRET!
although I guess I disagree with you... when I'm listening to the instrumental versions of songs I tend to expect the singing to start and then I just end up thinking them in my head. Personally I love most of Muse's lyrics (though I will agree they haven't really stood out as much on the new album, but that's okay because I still think the songs are pretty great vocally and instrumentally.) I think chris's songs probably gave me the most ~*~feelings~*~ tbh haha.

Yes Muse secret!

When I was in secondary school, there was a commercial about new movies and shows in my cable network. The thing is, they did it using a montage set to "Starlight". It was one of the best commercials I had ever seen and until today I've been looking all over the internet for that commercial.

Eh, Your Music Is Not My Music. Sometimes I listen to instrumentals, sometimes to vocals. Listen on.

Idk, I really like Muse, and I really like their songs, but there's something about Matt's voice that grates on me so much. I actually kind of like the lyrics? Or at least what they add musically to the songs, I just want someone else to sing them. I feel like a bad fan :/

Eeeee Muse secret! :DDD I'm a bit confused about people thinking the lyrics are terrible, cos I never really thought they were either, I guess. Right up until I heard Survival, that is the worst, most heavy-handedly literal piece of shit ever, urgh. Damn you Muse, it took literally 11 years for you to come out with something that I loathe and I have to be going to the gig in November haha. I may cry into my shirt when they (inevitably) play it...

Well enough of my rant/rambling about Survival, because I'm still glee that there's a Muse secret at all!!

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-10-08 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think it's really all about the context when it comes to Matt's lyrics... like... you really really really gotta understand where he's coming from. If you take em at face value, yeah, they're gonna be shit but there's always some deeper meaning I think. With the exception of Survival.

For example, as much as I hear people ragging on Madness and even though I can see why that is, I can't really say anything negative because I find it to be horribly accurate. /shrug

All that said, I think they're much better read on paper. He almost sounds a bit silly singing them aloud sometimes because the words are simple and so drawn out at the same time. I actually sat down and read The 2nd Law booklet recently and was like, "... This stuff isn't bad, actually."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I'm the other way around - I think they look silly on paper but sound good when sung aloud XD.

(...Also, this discussion thread makes me run late for class. Whoops)

To be honest I find myself wishing for instrumental version of many tracks, and not only of Muse XD
