The logic of that movie has a bit of a flaw, yes. But if the toys started talking, the entire premise would change to newspaper headlines going "Toys Are Alive: Holy Shit." "Do They Get To Vote?" "What Does This Mean For Labor?"

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Toys: Can They Be Trusted?" "What Are They Telling Your Children?" "Are Propaganda Toys Real?"
...
Yeah, the Toy Story universe is better off now knowing.

*not, sorry.

I would totally watch that movie. Someone should do a dark spinoff with that premise.

that's the only thing you don't like about them? I'm tearing up just thinking about TS3.

I thought Pixar said that going full toy mode was an automatic response and not a conscious effort on the toy.

So that might make it better? They're fighting against their nature when they do talk to humans.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Woody specifically says they'll have to "break a few rules". That doesn't imply it's automatic.

Not only that, but we often see toys moving in human presences. Hell, we've seen toys moving when they're being held.

Rather, I think it's actually because they wouldn't be played with anymore if people knew they could talk. And it's really risky--okay, so it happens once in a long while that a toy sits up and talks, so not so suspicious. But if the millions of toys out there only ~sometimes~ do it (read, once every couple of years), suddenly that's a lot more suspicious.

*Shrug* It was just something they said because someone asked. Since it wasn't specifically stated in the movie you can take it or leave it for your personal headcanon.

That's pretty good reasoning. I like your headcanon. I'll probably steal some of yours and mix it together with what I heard. As long as it stops me from asking unwanted questions, I'm good.

Thanks anon.

Wait so basically toys are baby weeping angels?

...Holy shiii-

Yes.

But, you know, with less killing and time travel.

...Maybe Weeping Angels aren't born evil and the grown up killers are the toys who go to kids like Sid? And we just haven't met the well treated toys yet?
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-10-15 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they're toys that are neglected? They need children's love to live. Once that runs out they die. So some don't want to die. They start trying to find something else to feed off of. That's when they become tainted and start becoming weeping angels. They start hurting the very children they loved. They feed off death (Time) instead of love. Their previous owner is usually their first victim.

That would actually explain even more about every toy's obsession to be loved and played with.

Even if it's not 'canon' this has been my interpretation. Woody is an old toy with a lot of experience, and Sid's poor toys were all broken up and re-formed. (which is awesome and creative in a real kid, minus the breaking his sister's toys part, but in the context of the movie is horrifying) IT seemed like they were inda unique in the ability to move around humans.

I always kinda assumed that going toy mode was an instinct, or else why didn't all the delusional Buzz Lightyears in the world talk to their owners?

why didn't all the delusional Buzz Lightyears in the world talk to their owners?

You're right. I remember asking myself that as well. The instinct theory would provide a reason for that.

But then again, my headcanon now involves weeping angels so I may not be the best representative for 'logical headcanons'.

I thought the Sid thing was a one off and if they did it again then maybe they were worried Sid would go from being a kid with an overactive imagination to being legitimate and everyone would be like...OMGOMG toys are alive *mass freak out* *toys get burned*

I do often wonder what happened to him though. Was he scarred for life? Was this ever addressed by any of the people who worked on the film cos IDK.

Word of God states that he was the garbage man rocking out on his headphones in the third film. So overall, the kid grew up to be fairly balanced.

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2012-10-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He was rocking out on his headphones, and he picked up toys from the dump to hang out with him on the truck.

I always thought it was a cute note to end the series on, because nobody in this series is irredeemably evil (even Lotso was just hurt and angry and riddled with abandonment issues). Sid grew up to be a decent-seeming guy. He probably doesn't even remember the toys-coming-to-life thing at this point, but clearly it's remained with him.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow I find it to be ironic that the kid who's always been creative with old toys, never threw them away but combined them into new "creations" ends up a garbage man, while the one who passes his old toys on goes to college.

I might be overanalyzing this...

I read an amazingly good fanfic where Andy eventually figures out the toys had been alive all along and borrows Woody from Bonnie for one last chat. Woody comes alive. But after a certain point, because he's breaking "the rules", it starts to cause him physical pain to stay that way, so he has to quickly revert back. I adopted that as my headcanon afterward, since it did help explain a lot of problems.

This writer has a lot of good Toy Story fics, if you're in the mood.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! That was probably the most heartbreaking fic I've read in a long while. Just... that part where Woody says he didn't want the conversation to end despite it being physically painful to him. ;_;

Definitely going to check out Khilari's other stuff. (And there goes my evening.)
